Why this blog?
Until this moment
I have been forced
to listen while media

have told me
"what Canadians think".
In all that time they
never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio - "You don't speak for me."

In my opinion the big takeaway from all this is we shouldn't be dipping into the media pool to appoint senators.
They seem to have high levels of moral turpitude, dishonesty, and gall.
Politicians are about one thing these days. Themselves period.
They are a class at war with the public.Entitlement is their cry.
From crime to Immigration they buck the citizens.
Mean while ignoring the Nation, the ignoble Senate fleeces the tax payer .
Regardless of the Political parties these people belong to.
Gone forever are the days people went into office for civic duty with part time pay. Now its an absolute wonderland of benefits for them.
Notice to its the Media Party types that are the greediest.
Yea, to placate the pathetic media, and political correctness affirmative hiring, Harper succumbed to the corrupt media herd mentality and it bit his ass big time, next time he will look around for honesty and integrtity two qualities non-existant in media people and their string pullers. Earth to Stevie, pick a farmer/rancher/meat cutter/construction worker/lumberjack etc someone who knows what honest work is.
The MSM are not well considered by most conservatives. We see here, indeed, that they are corrupt
even when they pretend conservatism.
I would, however, advise you, Ms. McMillan, not to preen in your virtue until you have been tried
by temptation.
Temptation is something we all face during our lifetime, in various forms. Knowing the difference between right and wrong is paramount when in a position of public trust. They all know the difference yet some sell their virtue for a few extra dollars rather than appreciate the fact they are already over compensated for the questionable value of their position and what they actually accomplish. It only confirms the public's perception that politics is for the greedy, the social climbing professional busy bodies and the egotistical power trippers that have little more than the gift of gab which got them elected. Entitlement is a disease that afflicts the rich as well as the poor. The difference is that the people in charge swore to uphold the virtue that comes with the position of trust. If these people actually had virtue the temptation would easily be brushed off. They don't. They know the difference between right and wrong. Throw them out.
The only solution to the problem of those "entitled to their entitlements" is the elimination of the political class. We should strive for a world where the word "politician" elicits the same emotional reactions in the majority of the population as "pedophile" currently does. We've made drinking and driving socially unacceptable and it's time to make the far more antisocial perversion of aspiring to be a "professional politician" a psychiatric disorder wherein involuntary treatment can be carried out.
Considering that any individual who relocates to Ottawa or Washington DC as a politician is immediately infected with rapidly progressive brain rot, we should quarantine these cesspools of disease immediately and involuntarily transport all individuals who have been infected from their former residence in the political areas of such cities back there and keep them quarantined for the remainder of their lives.
To protect individuals, who still wish to engage in the perversion of politics despite intense psychiatric treatment, from contagion, they should never be allowed to physically congregate in groups of more than 3 and all interactions should be held from their home communities via teleconferencing. Given the internet, there is absolutely no reason to establish temples to statism such as currently exist in the mecca's of the political class. A crash research program should be undertaken to determine the nature of the neurotrophic virus which is transferred among politicians and I suspect this may be a HERV.
One might ask where, in today's world, can people learn the ethics of right and wrong? Entitlement is taught to kids from the get go. Their parents have been raised in a social safety net. The vast majority have no active religious experience and the 10 Commandments are more alien than the written word. So when that temptation presents itself what moral imperative will one fall back on?
No, temptation is never easy to brush off. And temptation to cheat on expense accounts is
one of the sneakier.
I particularly suspect people who lack humility, which is a Christian virtue; or, to phrase it in terms
which will be understood by atheists, who lack insight into their own natures and the human
condition.
I would suggest to you and to Ms. McMillan that reading "Murder in the Cathedral" might prove
illuminating.
The majority who have come up with this stupid idea are trying to save their own jobs as now every Senator will be subject to this audit using the retro-active expense criteria.
This means the majority, if not all, will be now be guilty, retroactive laws are effective at doing that.
This is a media party driven "scandal". They were unable to get the electorate to vote against the Harper Government, so they go after the Senate where once appointed the Prime Minister has no control.
What is the role of the Senate? What does it actually do? How valuable has been the committee work they do been?
The media party doesn't care, they are only driven by Harper derangement syndrome. Threatened by the internet and losing viewers daily, they're
desperate to exercise their fading power to drive the political agenda.
When Premier Brad Wall came out against an elected senate, against a political body of sober second thought. Against political reform of electing Senators.
The fix was in.
Geographic representation to balance off the high density population centres (and they can be pretty dense there) may end up being eliminated, as the media party and arrogant Premiers reject federalism for fiefdoms.
Senator Pamela Wallin would easily be elected in a Senate election in Saskatchewan.
A former media star accepting a Senator appointment as a Conservative is viewed by the media party as an act of apostasy.
And we all know what the extremists believe the punishment for that is.
It's the perfect scandal for the age of diversity though, doncha think?
All these big "scandals that rock Ottawa" are so tame, this one amounts to a case of "my dog crapped in the hall, can you believe it?" ... well yeah, it's a dog.
Larry, you sound just like the "media party" that you try to condem, there is no reason or excuse for the senators cheating on their expense reports, end of story!!!
CT, the priests rape young boys, televangelist rob the poor, the Vatican covers up the sins of the priests, the RC church has a legal business structure in the USA that limits damage in case it is sued for damages, and the list goes on. I'm not an an theist because I was born that way, I'm an atheist because I was raised in a "christian" environment. I saw all the lies and deceit that kristians expounded, and still do, even rite here in SDA!!!
For what it's worth, since this scandal started I've found it impressive the other long-sitting senators have been so much more virtuous than the three newish appointees that they haven't needed audit. It seems quite something that the three senators appointed for their willingness to vote for fixed terms are getting the fine tooth comb. Rome wasn't built in a day. And Canada wasn't built in two days.
Trouble is most, if not all of the folks that are appointed to public office or run for elected posts are not the "Joe or Jane Average". Not everyone has "staff" or "aids" to do the work. And they certainly don't have to ensure that there is enough paycheque for the month or save Canadian Tire money for that matter.
I certainly remember filling in expense reports, both in the military and civilian life and most of the time the paper mess was sent up to some pencil pusher that would submit what they figured you were entitled to. Yes, you were ultimately responsible but normally you just signed what was put in front of you and sent it in. The first claim or three you looked over the numbers to try and see if it made sense but after that you (or at least I) didn't worry about it that much.
I think Wallen and Duff's biggest problem was that they didn't question the claims their staff were putting in. If I was a staffer and likely a career bureaucrat then I would certainly try to get the most for my boss. these days though stuff that passed the smell test several years ago don't pass muster today, especially if you are conservative. If they were actually submitting their own paperwork then that is a whole new ball game.
The true reason for the Senate is as valid today as it was at Confederation. It is that these elder statesmen are being appointed for strictly political reasons for the most part and not logical. Some Senate reform would be great but please don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. A Lieberal/Dipper house without any "sober second thought" would be enough to drive me and most conservatives around the bend.
NME666 -- here we go again.
My Christian experience has been very different from yours. Generalizations about "the Church" and "the clergy" are generally fraught with contradictions.
Lies and deceit are a human problem -- a fallen human nature problem -- and we see them in every institution and, yes, surprise!, surprise!, in the Christian Church. In my experience, however, the good the Christian Church and Christians do far outweigh their collective sins and peccadilloes.
Whether you like it or not, NME666, the family, greatly relying on the Church, used to be the place where children learned right from wrong, the Ten Commandments, the Golden Rule. These are not branded into our DNA: goodness, honesty, selflessness, sacrifice need to be taught. They're not being taught anymore except in Church. Kids sure aren't learning about how to live virtuously from X-Box or most of the crap they watch on TV.
So, if not from the Church, where do young people learn the virtues?
I suspect a lot of holier than thou senators are going to be writing some big cheques when the audits are done. When the standard they set for the 4 accused is applied to them they might be awakened.
I cannot see how the senate can suspend any member without a conviction for an indictable offence. A simple offence is not enough. It has to be an "infamous crime." There is no allowance for suspensions. I am not sure why the senate would choose to illegally attempt to suspend the senators, usurping the power of the Governor General who appointed them on the advice of the PM.
Constitution Act 1867
31. The Place of a Senator shall become vacant in any of the following Cases:
(1) If for Two consecutive Sessions of the Parliament he fails to give his Attendance in the Senate:
(2) If he takes an Oath or makes a Declaration or Acknowledgment of Allegiance, Obedience, or Adherence to a Foreign Power, or does an Act whereby he becomes a Subject or Citizen, or entitled to the Rights or Privileges of a Subject or Citizen, of a Foreign Power:
(3) If he is adjudged Bankrupt or Insolvent, or applies for the Benefit of any Law relating to Insolvent Debtors, or becomes a public Defaulter:
(4) If he is attainted of Treason or convicted of Felony or of any infamous Crime:
(5) If he ceases to be qualified in respect of Property or of Residence; provided, that a Senator shall not be deemed to have ceased to be qualified in respect of Residence by reason only of his residing at the Seat of the Government of Canada while holding an Office under that Government requiring his Presence there.
and the Liberal Harb has quietly slipped out the back door before the last of the s**t hits the fan and spreads itself on the three Conservatives. I'm sure that the MSM is thankful for that as they take glee in trashing those that they love to hate.
As someone suggested I'd hate to think of the Senate gone, can you imagine what a combined Liberal-Dipper government would do to this country in its headlong rush to create "Obama North" and no one to step in front of them and say, "now just wait a minute".
Foggy memories of when I used to have an expense account: Doesn't the expenses have to be cleared by someone other than the one submitting them? I seem to recall that there were expenses I thought were legitimate that the person writing the cheque wouldn't pay. I'm not here to defend any senator I am simply asking that the comptrollers be on the hook for allowing these 'expenses' to be paid. Time to hold the burycrats accountable.
Senator Kate, has a nice ring to it.
Er . . . you wouldn't drive your van into that fountain by parliament would you?
If we are going to question the morals, values and ethics of Senators who were once employed by the media and with which I do not disagree, why don't we also extend this to questioning the morals, values and ethics of Governor's General who were once employed by the media?
Yes, Joe. In my case the administrator checked the submission, and the auditors at the annual audit also looked at the category totals for anomalies.
What batb said. Every human is more than capable of lies, deceit, and stealing. These virtues are no longer generally taught in our schools and in the Tommy Douglas Rah,Rah, Palestinians churches, and as well in many homes. Saw an incident in Costco, a mother and three children ate half a box of grapes, put it back, and took another full one. If not taught right from wrong in the churches and homes...there is no other place. Sure as hell not from our government leaders.
So NME666 wasn't born an atheist. Pity he wasn't born a Jew because everyone knows Jews are Jews for life right NME666?
As for the rest of his anti church spew - who cares. Anyone who is so conflicted in his own thinking really doesn't deserve the attention.
I read an article by a former CBC commentator who abandoned his socialist atheist position because every time he covered a crisis there was a Christian or Christian organization helping alleviate the suffering of the afflicted. What finally got to him was his own near brush with death. He was flying in a single engine aircraft over some very inhospitable African landscape when the engine quit. The plane was damaged as were the pilot on passenger. From out of nowhere a man appeared wearing a 'backward collar' and a large wooden cross on a chain who tended their wounds then gave them food and shelter until they were rescued. The man, an Anglican priest, had a small hut that he used as a school to help the native children of the area. On a subsequent visit the crash victim found out that the priest was a highly respected and much loved man of the people who was seen as bringing light to a very dark place. Until his arrival the people had been living in mortal fear of the local witch doctors.
Unfortunately for NME666 Christianity may be the worse religion - except for all the others including atheism.
I should have said "most" of our government leaders. There are exceptions, and we have a leader in Regina and in Ottawa I believe are exceptions. Dalton McGuinty, Wynn, Redford are not exceptions. Justin does not have brains enough to in either category.
This was reported Monday in the Hill Times - haven't seen it anywhere else!
Five Liberal, four Conservative, and one Independent Senator made the list of top 10 biggest spenders led by Northwest Territories Liberal Senator Nick Sibbeston in the last three years from September 2010 to August 2013.
The research conducted by Barbara Robson Bond, who in the past worked for former Senator Mira Spivak, revealed that the second highest spender was Liberal Senator Terry Mercer (Northend Halifax, N.S.). Sen. Wallin (Saskatchewan) came in third, Liberal Sen. James Cowan (Nova Scotia) came in fourth and Liberal Sen. Charlie Watt (Inkerman, Que.) came in fifth.
http://www.hilltimes.com/news/news/2013/10/14/sen-wallin-not-biggest-spender-over-last-three-years-senate-documents-show/36292
You will not hear that on BCB, CTV, or Global, or see it in the Red Star or the Grope.
" ... and the Liberal Harb has quietly slipped out the back door before the last of the s**t hits the fan ..."
By resigning from the Senate after having repaid a total of $231,649 -- and not going to court to defend himself -- Harb's annual $122,989 pension can't be touched. 'Nice work if you can get it.
What a Lieberal schmuck.
One has to wonder if the whole thing was not orchestrated to cast public derision on the senate and give an excuse to abolish it rather than democratize and empower it. More consolidation of power in the cabinet and PMO - jus sayin' - power lust has no politial stripe or brand name. We've already seen how the Ottawa disease has stagnated the CPC senate reform/transparency agenda.
John, I have the "temptation" to pad an expense account at most of the dog shows I attend - the clients who send their dogs with me would simply foot the bill. Instead, I sleep in my van to save them money, find inexpensive hotels when I can't,and pay for my own meals.
So, when I say "I'd sleep in my car for a salary like that", it's not a campaign promise - it's my proven track record.
Kate could never be a Senator. She's not part of the Media propaganda set.
Her sin is telling it like it is. A big no no in the World today.
No one likes the person who points out Elephants stampeding their party.
No the artists palette , not the red room is Kate's forte( not to mention the kennel of dogs she raises). She Is I figure not only adding some beauty to the World. Some truth as well.
The Senate would only Blight the light.

U once spouted that there are Christians, and then there are Christians, and U were/are right. So, as there are such a variety, not all of them can be right, in fact only one could be right, but all of them can, and to an extent are, wrong. Also, and several in here have agreed to this, that Christianity has changed, for the better, over time. What this change says is that "before" they had it wrong, other wise why would change be necessary. And in a 100 years there will be more change, effectively saying that today the church still has it wrong, get that, or should I type slower?
Joe, I was born gypsy, and will always carry that heritage, and that designate is even more hated than Jew, try grasping that fact. Joe, why do RC priests wear funny cloths, do they think that gad will not recognize them other wise. Why do they chant in latin, does god not understand English, or german, or Spanish, or polish, or, or!!! U see joe, religion isn't about god, it's about the ceremony and the process. I'v been to a few of these "ceremonies" and find it quite interesting how they are so similar to heathen chanting. Christians could talk to their god in normal cloths and quiet voices, at home, in the park, or at a friends home.
and joey and batty, maybe you 2 could cough up some god proof, I'v never seen or heard any, and no one has ever been able to come up with any:-))))
I saw that article, and you are right to draw attention to it. Larry (@10:59 a.m.) also offers important insights, and scar (@12:20 p.m.) makes an important point.
This "story" (such as it was, or is) is way too old. What are we talking about, here, exactly? A few hundred grand -- most or all of which has been paid back, or will be paid back shortly.
As Marjory Lebreton has pointed out, and which Craig Oliver has affirmed ("I would have loved to nail Liberals, who were conducting business out of their offices", or words to that effect), it was Conservative legislation that allowed these sorts of investigations to occur. So, what? Conservative Senators are going to carry on a witch-hunt against their caucus colleagues, or former members thereof, ad infinitum? The Liberals in the Senate, with their little bow ties, or in the other place, demonstrably can't be counted on to do the same. Personally, I am still waiting for a direct answer to a direct question: where are the missing $40 million from the Sponsorship Scandal (only about $210 million of the $250 million has ever been accounted for, as I understand it)?
If Senator McMillan happens, which our whole family here in south-western Ontario thinks it should, either by appointment or by election, neither of which options we would have any say in, we certainly would not expect her to sleep in her van in Ottawa. And I'm not just sure how you can impose a residency requirement in respect of a job (see scar's comment -- Mr. Trudeau, Sr. didn't seem to be able to change any of that on his way to the "New Canada") in a country of 3.6 million square miles without paying a residency allowance.
