FDR didn't get into the war till his own ass was on the line.

FDR kept America poor and dirty and unprepared for war.

liberal of Liberals my arse. FDR would be waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy to the right of most of today's so-called Conservatives/Republicans.

Exactly. Today's liberals have drank too much from Karl Marx's evil concoction. Classical liberalism died in the 60s and 70s.

Surely Bruce wouldn't oppose adopting FDR's style of dealing with public sector unions.

FDR: "All Government employees should realize that the process of collective bargaining, as usually understood, cannot be transplanted into the public service. It has its distinct and insurmountable limitations when applied to public personnel management. The very nature and purposes of Government make it impossible for administrative officials to represent fully or to bind the employer in mutual discussions with Government employee organizations. The employer is the whole people, who speak by means of laws enacted by their representatives in Congress. Accordingly, administrative officials and employees alike are governed and guided, and in many instances restricted, by laws which establish policies, procedures, or rules in personnel matters."

The Japanese suckered Hitler(the Austrian) into declaring war on the United States.
It was only natural for FDR to respond to having war declared on his country by fighting back.
Both FDR and Hitler were socialists and fascists.
FDR's administration was loaded with Soviet spies in high places, Alger Hiss being but one. So full of communists was FDR's administration that the Joint Chiefs kept the development of the atom bomb a secret from FDR, seeing him as a security threat.

That said, the Soviets were the ones who really defeated the 3rd Reich, the western Allies just helped.

ms. kate - your sense of humour is incomparable. a joy to witness.

FDR wouldn't countenance any competition in the dictator biz.

FDR was definitely a lefty but he was all for war against Germany, doing whatever he could to help Churchill and the British. Problem was, there was an isolationist mindset prevalent in the houses and he couldn't get into the war until the Japanese attacked.

Austria?

Well, let's put some shrimp on the bar-b!!

(Sorry, couldn't resist)

Dirtman: In fact, had Congress been aware the full nature of his assistance to Great Britain it's possible they would have impeached him. He, like Churchill, recognized the German Nazi threat early on.

FDR was far left in my book. Most of his New Deal polices were declared unconstitutional by the SCOTUS and what wasn't declared unconstitutional didn't work. By 1937 the US was no closer to recovery from the great depression than when it had started 7 plus years previously. After Pearle Harbor and the American entry into the war the economy turned for the better. Isolationist policies were very popular and anti-war gatherings were attracting up to 90,000 people a month before the Japanese attack.

Because of FDR a lot of people ended up speaking Russian, or died hearing it.

back in the 60T's Harper would have been a liberal

as to Hitler, he had a Jooish/muslim {Moroccan) heritage, but he spoke austrian

So it was FDR that saved everyone from speaking German? Maybe those millions of Allied troops had a thing or two to do with that, you think?

This is just typical of the Left's fascination and childlike infatuation with "strong men". You see the same mindset on display in their adulation of Obama. Yes, FDR won WWII all by himself, just like Obama killed Bin Laden personally.

Of course, you're assuming a liberal is going to get that joke, right?

The great Soviet state defeated the Germans with a lot of help from western supplies and intelligence. Of course, one is at a great disadvantage when one starts the war on the other side, only switching to the allied side after the axis powers stab you in the back.

GM

Ummm, you guys do know there is no such thing as "Austrian", right? The official language of Austria is German.

Ken (Kulak) "Classical liberalism died in the 60s and 70s."

They gave classic liberalism a new name. It's now called conservatism. The statist Marxists of todays left are in no way, shape, or form liberals. When it's state versus the individual, the liberal goes with the individual every time. The Marxist goes with the state. Gun ownership and freedom of speech are liberal issues, gun control and censorship are not.

Actually it was a real conservative named Winston Churchill and the whole of the British people who saved everybodys sorry ass from speaking German. And it was the British left who dragged their feet every step of the way until the Germans invaded Russia. Ditto the American left.

Yes we are aware of that, that's what made it a joke.

Of course he was the liberal of liberals. He was married to a far left lesbian who kept a lover in the white house. And FDR himself had a mistress. When he died he was with her and not his wife. I'm sure JFK and Slick Willy would both be proud of that accomplishment.

glenn "Actually it was a real conservative named Winston Churchill and the whole of the British people who saved everybodys sorry ass from speaking German."

After the surrender of France in 1940, it was the U.K., Canada, and a small handful of countries facing Germany. Russia was more or less allied with Germany and the U.S. was nowhere to be seen. To be fair, it was mostly a British effort until Canadians first fought in December 1941 at Hong Kong. Canadians were in France, ready for battle, in 1940 but the unexpected French surrender left them trapped there although all but a few made it out.

Churchill was a welfare-statist who happened to be the wrong man at the right time. Thank goodness Chamberlain was in charge when he was. He kept government meddling out of the economy and kept Britain out of a war it was in no shape for.

America should never have gotten clandestinely involved in WW2. They would have been better off avoiding involvement altogether.

Glenn, well said. Furthermore, it was the British left that would not allow Lloyd George to accept Tsar Nicholas II and his family after Nicholas was forced to abdicate, nor would the left allow a rescue mission being planned to take place. The so-called moderate left was supporting the Bolsheviks as early as 1917.

Dear LAS, I can't imagine you're really that crazy. Don't troll me, bro.

The Japanese didn't "sucker" Hitler into anything. They didn't ask him, or even expect him, to enter the war. For one thing, they were resolved to stay out of the war against Russia, and they figured that Hitler as an ally against America would merely have more leverage to pressure them into action against Russia. And of course, a European power with no navy makes a pretty useless ally in a war against America in the Pacific.

Britain was certainly friendly to the US but had never become a formal ally. None of the countries Hitler attacked were American allies, and no matter how unwelcome Hitler's success, it posed no apparent serious threat to American interests. There was simply no justification for America entering the war, until of course Hitler gave it to them.

Why he did that is a bit of a mystery. He seems to have acted impulsively. Basically he thought that a declaration of war would make a great press release. He assumed that the Americans would be completely occupied with the Japanese in the Pacific, and there was no way that Germany could practically get involved there, so there would in effect be no consequences. It never occurred to him that America might be a dangeorus enemy, let alone that they'd be invading Germany within 4 years.
