CETA, the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, has been in negotiations for four years, and it covers much more than fish. It's expected to take another two years for the deal to be ratified, but when that happens, 98 per cent of EU tariffs will be reduced to zero.Ninety-nine per cent of EU tariffs will be eliminated on non-agricultural goods, meaning virtually unrestricted access on everything from minerals to forestry products, chemicals and ships.
That, friends, is huge.

It may not be all about the cheese, but given that the milk monopoly types are up in arms over this deal, I'm happy. I'm hoping this means I no longer have to pay more than twice what I can pay in buffalo for milk.
Once again, Mr Harper hits one out of the park, with little hype or fanfare leading up to it. This will be huge for the east coast on so many levels, and for the rest of the Canadian economy as well. The ultimate "social program" is still a job.
So, cue the lib-left howling and wailing in . . . since, as we all know, Mr Harper doesn't have what it really takes to be a great Prime Minister i.e. the flouncy hair and starry-eyed look of Shiny Pony.
Just don't get us involved in those stupid EU regulations we keep reading about. The central planners simply won't give up.
Other than that, I'm all for it.
Time for the milk producers to take advantage of what is on offer - the Canadian dollar allows producers to buy new equipment and get into new products rather than just sit back and collect a guaranteed income.
Will that be hard? Probably, just like every other employer who needs to improve to compete!
As long as the Euros are kept on COD I am good with it.
interesting as this is probably the biggest deal ever made and CBCpravda and CTVtass hardly mention it . although to give them credit there is very little braying from the MSM or libs or dippers.
Good point lance, but it is the cheese I am waiting for baby. I am sick to death of the Canadian cheese monopoly, not to mention their largely crappy cheese sold at inflated prices.
Of course this whole deal must have the pinkos in a twist, because they all love Europe, yet heaven forbid we are now going to trade more with them, and thus ship more goods and produce more CO2 doing so.
The 100 mile diet up in smoke again, yet they love Europe, whatever is a pinko to do!!!
The Eurozone has more people than the US, and not sure if its larger than the US economically, certainly is number 2 right now as an economic entity.
SHould be big for ports that ship and receive goods on the North Atlantic Trade....that includes Air PORTS......
Here is the top rated comment from one of the (biased) CBC stories on the deal:
"If Harper and the tories are involved it will turn out to be a historic loss, Steve is just not good at defending Canadian interests."
Typical left-wing response, ignoring facts, just ad hominem attacks. And how immature to refer to the PM as "Steve".
Good bye subsidized/protected Quebec dairy monopoly ;-)
I think they can call him whatever they want. I've called PM Martin worse, President Obama worse, and Minister Flaherty worse.
Referring to the PM as "Steve" is childish and tells you something about the mindset of the Harper haters. It is a form of name calling.
I despise Robert Mugabe but I would not refer to him as "Robert". It sounds utterly childish.
Fact 1: This is a great deal for Canada if ratified. All of Canada.
Fact 2: The ratification deadlline is just after the next federal election.
Fact 3: Justin Trudeau couldn't publicly debate the merits of church basement rummage sale.
Fact 4: Stephen Harper is crazy like a fox.
Anyone else thinking what I am thinking?
Just hope the EU hasn't buried something deep in the text about carbon, carbon taxes or glow ball warming.
What amazes me is that the EU agreed to it at all. This fair dominion is not that big a market, and the rise in incomes in the EU will be at most 0.03 percent, a few euro a year per person at most.
My diagnosis---our Angie got spooked by the FDP's vote imploding and AfD coming within a hair's breadth of getting into the Bundestag, in spite of assurances that her re-election was a foregone conclusion. As restoring to Europe's people their right to issue money isn't an option, she can't afford to be picky about where Germany raises the money to prop up her busted banks any more. Romanianization on the fringes is approaching its limits as a revenue source. She gave Barroso his orders to clutch at the Canadian straw, and that was that.
Meanwhile, the Czechs could still torpedo the deal. They're still sore about Canada's refusing to import the Czech Republic's surplus Gypsy crime, and may refuse to ratify the deal unless people with Czech passports are excused visas to enter Canada.
Why? They weren't daft enough to throw away the Czech crown.
For Earle McCurdy to be onside like he is this must be a good deal, that man has made a 40 year living railing against government policy in NL.
For a start, it means that German Cambazolla and French Brie are going to be cheaper which is good. I'm tired of having to go to the US to buy my cheeze as I refuse to buy the made in Quebec product which is all that's available in Canada.
Eastern Paul makes a good point about the potential for this deal to founder on the reef of EU regulations, and I'm sure that we'll find out soon enough whether this is a problem. Right now the most important thing is to start getting away from our dependence on primarily trading with the US. Obviously PMSH has looked at the likely course of the US economy over the next 5 years and is trying to ensure that Canada is as insulated as possible from the big crash that is coming to the south of us RSN.
Good bye subsidized/protected Quebec dairy monopoly ;-)
Nope. They're about as protected as ever. There is a tiny little increase in cheese imports and nothing else. You're still going to pay out the rear.
Unfortunately, I fear that to get this deal-which isn't free trade but freer trade-we will end up importing insane EU regulations.
I agree, but with regards to Fact 3, Justin doesn't have to be capable of debating anything. Sadly an awful lot of people will vote for him because of his name and he is pretty.
As DrD says, this deal will good for all of Canada.
Eurozone (EU 28) is now the largest economy in the world. EU has now grown to 28 Countries with GDP pegged by the IMF at $USD 16.7 trillion compared to $USD 16.3 trillion for the US. GDP mileage will vary depending on source. World Bank has EU lead even greater.
Details here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_GDP_(nominal)
Interesting to note that EUs growth comes largely from countries joining. Therefore the GDP per capita growth not as large.
Big Dealer
EU trade deal will be pushed off media radar by tomorrow because Duffy has gone on offensive to keep his job.
Norman Spector says "could be the end of Harper's" PM ship.
If Norman Spector is saying this the MSM will be all over Duffy's accusations.
Duffy will go from media pariah to MSM Victim of the Week. He'll be receiving Loubani-Greyson like adulation for his attacks on the PMO by the time the Sunday morning political shows are airing. Sad, very sad.
A Tyee poll that could use your help:
How Do You Feel about CETA and Free Trade?
http://goo.gl/unD5uz
http://thetyee.ca/Polls/2013/10/21/CETA/?utm_source=daily&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=211013
Heh, maybe we can import Chinese crap and export it at a profit. Other than that, we're just exporting what the good Lord gave us. Mainly primary products.
sooke54, you're absolutely right that poll can use some help. The most significant concern people have about being able to implement our own environmental regulations. If this was a group of SDA types responding to the poll, I'd infer that they were worried about the Euroweenies trying to force their watermelon policies on us. Given the presumed source of most of the poll respondents, they are likely even bigger watermelons than the EU kleptocrats.
I too filled out the poll and discovered by looking at the results that I was totally out of step with this bunch. Presumably most of the subscribers to the Tyee are university students. All the brainwashing of our young makes the future looks grim.
Should remind that commenter that liberal and NDP and PQ provincial govts have signed off on the agreement - if they have problems with it - go talk to them.
Reminds me of the best line from "The Da Vinci Code"....
"YOU CAN'T TRUST THE FRENCH!"
Any of you notice how CETA got pushed off the front pages today for the Duffy-gate scandal.
I also noticed that Norman Spector gets revived as a "conservative" political commentator when the MSM can use him to deliver bad news. Example here: http://www.ctvnews.ca/video?clipId=1028519&playlistId=1.1507471&binId=1.810401&playlistPageNum=1
Norman gives a one-two punch against PMSH for Duffy allegations and RCMP investigation into the whole thing.
Did anybody see him being asked to give his opinion about CETA?
Ceta, good news for the PM, is gone Duffy dominates.
