Seems as if incredible incompetence on the part of the police is the cause of this shooting. When someone tells me they're being followed by imaginary people who are irradiating them, I might check out their story with a Geiger counter but I'm much more likely to involuntarily commit them to a psych ward. I disagree with the schizophrenia diagnosis; true he could have been a paranoid schizophrenic as they are far more highly functional than the usual harmless schizophrenic. Given his sleep difficulties that were noted, I'd suspect that he was more likely bipolar and in a manic phase which is often confused with schizophrenia. I've yet to see a schizophrenic who was as crazy as a psychotic manic. Toxicology results will also be interesting as one can get a very good simulation of paranoid schizophrenia through the use of large doses of methamphetamine when one combines this with staying awake for days. Regardless of the diagnosis, what was needed was a good dose of olanzapine (gentler than haloperidol and doesn't switch a manic directly into depression like haloperidol does). This minor quibbling aside, Krauthammer is completely correct in his assessment of the situation of where the state, when it should have become involved in a situation didn't do so. This same state, which believes it's fine to leave a psychotic man in a motel room alone, is ready to kill someone for the crime of not wearing a seat belt. Maybe it's an example of a psychotic state assuming that psychosis is normal and that the real dangers are those individuals who dare to question the state.
