Novelist Jack Engelhard, writing in the Washington Times' "Communities" section:

Reader Tip is in case any of the readers are interested a very effective way of de-worming hogs is to give them small chunks of coal like your parents used in their stoves and furnaces. The hogs just love it and go berserk when you throw the lumps in the pen. The next day you will see the evidence of how well the coal worked. :-)

Re: De-worming hens.

I'm a Sasaktchewan farm boy. That woman needs an education. The stains on the eggs are known as poop. It has nothing to do with worms. And you should avoid cleaning eggs with soap and water. Let the poop dry, and wipe the dirty eggs (lightly) with steel wool or sand paper. When you place an egg in water, it causes bacteria to seep through the shell and into the egg. Eggs are naturally protected against germs. Better yet, change the straw in the nests more often.

I`ve solved the problem years ago. I buy Safeway eggs, white, cleaned and graded. Fry in butter, serve with toast and a piece of sirloin steak.

Also, chickens are not capable of love. Not like cats.

Okay, the cats might be faking it. But at least they, you know, can be bothered. Faking it.

Chickens are lizards with feathers. I ate crocodile once. Tasted like chicken. You know why? Because a crocodile is a big evil murderous swimming chicken without feathers.

They've been known to walk across dry land over a mile to hunt down prey - i.e. you, in your tent, on vacation.

They'll chase you up a tree and wait patiently underneath for days. They're in no hurry. They are horrible dinosaurs. And chickens, while obviously more harmless, are no better, morally.

Now if Becky had the treatment for curing our emerald ash borer infected "ash" trees the 18 year old ash trees in our street would still be standing as opposed to be in the tree guys' chipper.

Our street is now bare as the beautiful ash trees are being cut and chipped into the chip pile at Woodstock's waste yard.

Diatomaceous earth won't cut it with the Emerald Ash Borer, Becky!
