"They offered a paranoid, dystopian vision of a more dangerous and violent America where everyone is armed and no place is safe," said New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
(...)
"They were blaming it on all kinds of other things instead of guns themselves," said Medea Benjamin, co-director of women's peace group Code Pink, who was escorted out of the briefing after holding up a poster that read "NRA blood on your hands."
In a statement corresponding with the announcement of COPS grants, Attorney General Eric Holder said, "In the wake of past tragedies, it's clear that we need to be willing to take all possible steps to ensure that our kids are safe when they go to school."

Which is deeply, deeply F#cked up. Guns in schools... how twisted is that?
People are no worse now than they were 100 or even 50 years ago. The key difference is access to monstrous firepower. Thank you NRA. You got what you wanted.
Bunch of gun pervs.
Nah, no increase in firepower.....the difference is the people....
100 or even 50 years past no one expected anything as futile as a sign "gun free zone" to have an effect.....and capital punishment was a standard institution.....
I think you need your head examined John. Typical fool that you are. Guess you didn't know that one of the worst mass killings in schools in the U.S. took place on May 18, 1927 in Bath Township, Michigan. 38 kids and 6 adults were killed and at least 58 were injured. No guns....they were killed with dynamite and pyrotol.
And you bet that people are worse now than they were 100 or 50 years ago. Considerably worse in many cases. And if guns weren't available, they would get them anyway. This liberal thought that if you want something to stop, you simply ban the activity shows just how mentally incompetent many liberal "thinkers" are.
John, you aver that people are no worse than a hundred years ago. Not provable or demonstratable. However, people are dumber and more indoctrinated than they were 100 years ago. You are an anecdotal demonstration of this.
John,
Please explain the super high gun deaths in Liberal cities with the toughest anti gun laws in the US?
Oh and while you're at it, the steep drop in gun crimes in armed conceal carry jurisdictions.
Truths, facts...such inconvenient things for a commie like you.
An armed society is a polite society.
Well, I made this comment earlier in reply to John. I agree that people are not demonstratably or anecdotally worse than 100 years age. However, people are dumber. You are anecdotally much dumber than people of 100 years ago. And, I am much dumber for coming back to comment time-after-time, only to be turned down by Captcha for obeying their instructions.

OCB...Perfect response to John.
John, one of the main contributors to mass shootings is the fact that there are more crazy people out in society who should be institiutionalized. Ever since the left decided to campaign to "free" the insane from instituions a few decades ago, because it was "against their human rights to be locked up, society has suffered. More crazy homeless people wandering around big cities consuming drugs and alcohol, sleeping on grates, and pissing in doorways who should be taken care of in institutions. And more people (like the Navy Yard shooter) who hear voices and believe people are after them. It is safer for society if insane people are institutionalized. However, crusading dumbasses like you will come out and protest and wage legal battles to keep them out amongst the rest of us. So, next time there is a shooting by a crazed gunman you can take pride in the fact that you are part of the illogical mob that thinks that insane, violent psychotics should have more rights than those that should be protected from them. But then again, if we institutionalized all the crazy people there would be no one at pot rallies and oilsands protests.
I would refine that a bit, Joey.
Liberal thought prefers to lay responsibility on an inanimate object rather than an individual's act.
Islamic supremacists have also picked soft (gun-free zone) targets such as Christian churches, student dorms and shopping malls.
As the Rolling Stones sang in Sympathy for the Devil: Every cop is a criminal and all the sinners saints.
Know little about guns do-ya john.
Ever seen pictures of civil war wounds?
"Wayne LaPierre put forth the need for a stronger armed presence in schools. He pointed out that we "protect our banks... airports, office buildings, power plants, [and] sports stadiums" with "armed security," yet leave our kids unprotected in gun free zones."
But at that time, Lapierre was called "insane" by the Left.
Now that THEIR beloved President has adopted the idea,I suppose,in true Soviet Russian style, the Left will now claim it's a brilliant idea, indicative of just how much the Prez cares about our kids.
Can't say I like the idea of Federal Gunmen in the schools, though.
Wow, a little bit of common sense working its way back into the school system, but what will that do to the brainwashed "experts" that were sure they had the solution ?

I can see the spike in Prozac sales as part of their co-parenting power is removed from their care.
But... but... guns!
When it's the NRA's idea, it's monstrous rubbish. When it's Obama's idea, it makes perfect sense.
This is the same guy who thinks Austrians speak Austrian and waits for Russia to bail him out.
Liberal hypocrisy in five, four...
John, its not the firepower that determines the level of a tragedy, its the firepower differential.
One bad guy with any gun versus any number of unarmed (welcome to our "gun-free zone") victims equals a massacre.
One bad guy with a full-auto rifle versus one or more potential victims with any gun, is just a simple "tap-tap" away from being neutralized.
I'll take the second scenario anytime, thanks.
BTW John, could you find a new handle? Wouldn't want anyone to get the two of us confused...
"That school (Columbine) had an armed sheriff's deputy on duty who was unable to stop the shooting."
He was outside watching the smokers, got shot at, but couldn't return effective fire because he didn't have his glasses on. At least he engaged the gunmen a couple times. The rest of them waited it out as the kids were killed.
Fire power differential? Gun manufacturers couldn't have better advertising.
Calling NME666, yoohoo, its back. Told ya.
Osumashi, exactly.
In Israel their teachers are armed and they have never had a shooting in their schools.
The only parnoid dystopian in that screed is Michael Bloomberg. Why do liberals feel the sociopathic need to project their nightmares on to the rest of us?
Eh John, I doubt you have first hand knowledge of 50 years ago, but I do. Fifty years ago, people in North American society were more couteous, more civil, more forgiving, less prone to violence, believed that their progeny should also have those traits and enforced it. And they were no less armed to the teeth. You didn't want to carry a gun 50 years ago, because you had no reason to believe you'd need it, any place, any time, and you didn't. You had essential entitlements, but you would have believed it was your own responsibility to make your way in the world and not steal it literally or figuratively from someone else.
I'm also getting regularly picked off for moderation lately too and its a pain.

Well its catching me all the time now too then - making it not worth the effort to play if you have to keep retrying to get a post in.
For sure. Give Groundskeeper Willie a sidearm and be done with it.
Yes Joey... the Bath school masacre was huge. And guess what? You could buy explosives in stores back in those days. And so now, you can't just run down to your local hardware store and buy a couple of sticks of dynamite. Perhaps there's a reason why we try to keep people from getting their hands on large amounts of explosives?

P.S. I looooove being called a "commie" by you guys. You might as well call me a "witch" or an "infidel". It would be about as appropriate.
We talk apples and you talk oranges. Guns are simply tools and in the wrong hands will always bring destruction. It's the wrong hands we are talking about. Taking guns from law abiding citizens will change nothing except empower the human garbage that should be put down for the good of humanity instead of being locked up with 3 good meals a day (plus snacks and entertainment) and all the recreation they can handle. There is little to fear from the justice system in the western world. It's not guns that are the problem, as statistics bear out in right to carry states. It's the human garbage coddled by society as if they had some value. Get rid of the garbage and the disease it carries will be largely eliminated.
"I looooove being called a "commie" by you guys. You might as well call me a "witch" or an "infidel". It would be about as appropriate..."
Agreed.
Sometimes good old-fashioned 'dickhead' works best.
John.. This'll twist your bippy.. A hundred years ago there were more per-capita guns than now.. Plus that.. Machine guns were legal for citizens to own.. And lots did...
And I loooooove calling "you guys" commies (not a random word selection).
Nice one...especially the bath massacre
TOILET, take away the die-no-might, and the guns, and some creative will design an elcheepo fuel--air-boom (or some other method) and kill even more effectively
the muzzie tend to use blow-me-up good stuff
try keeping up would ja
How did the Americans get rid of half the guns. They must have as FBI statistics show that from 1994 to present, the homicide rate dropped in half. The FBI is scratching it's collective head. What caused this?
If you are a credentialed scientist, they would like to hear from you and your research on this problem.
One pair of researchers propose a solution to the quandary that, surprising for Liberals, has nothing to do with guns.
The researchers are: Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner.
In their best seller: "Freakonomics" they describe how it was the disappearance of criminals that caused the phenomenon.
No, No, it can't be true, can it? Guns not the problem?
Well it is true. The criminals began to vanish because of the relaxing of abortion laws. "Row vs. Wade" is what did the deed.
And the correlation follows each State's abortion rate with it's crime rate.
Proof positive for any one but a Liberal Cleopatra.
In Johns defense I think we should go easy on him. He is never too rude and can generally string a sentence together. Not entirely his fault that he is a product of the modern education system and is devoid of critical thinking, as well as brainwashed, but he is not quite as bad as his peers over at rabble.ca and although he sounds quite young, I suspect there is still hope for him because of the frequency which with he visits this site. His peers seldom get beyond the troll level....insult and run, but John hangs around and takes the (usually) polite abuse he so richly deserves. So , having said that John , I'll leave the lights on for you in case you ever agree with anything said on this site, and if that day ever comes we will know you are not a total loss to society like most of your leftist friends. If you are over 40 I take this all back but I suspect you are in your 20's so there is still hope. Let's show a little compassion for the other sides limited thinking.
The last thing that a school needs is an armed representative of the statist government in DC. Why don't we instead send a bunch of teachers over to Israel to talk to the armed teachers there? A far better idea as long as the teachers are proficient enough at hitting a target and have been carefully screened for moonbat tendencies.
What happens now to the kid who draws a picture of the statist security guard with his gun? Does he automatically get expelled? Is there an appropriate size blur that's supposed to exist where the guys holster is located?
Only a mere 40 or so years ago, no-one batted an eyelash if we showed up in high school in Calgary with our .22's if we planned on going gopher hunting after school. One of the physics labs involved a heavy wooden block into which one shot a .22 round and estimated the velocity of the bullet by the maximum angle of deflection of the wooden block. We did have to put on safety glasses for that experiment. Curiously, with all the guns in school back then, the only organisms that died were gophers and that was outside the Calgary city limits as we all knew back then it was illegal to discharge firearms within the city limits (except in physics experiments).
