Earlier this year, Manitoba increased the PST.
It will take a year or two to measure the full impact of the PST hike on Manitobans' standard of living -- particularly on low-income families -- and on economic growth, retail sales, and inflation. But some of the early data show the tax hike so far is having a negative effect on the economy.
Statistics Canada released its monthly retail sales figures this week and it showed a massive one-month drop for Manitoba, the worst showing in the country.

f@cking socialists!!! voting has consequences...hope the province goes down the toilet.
The Manitoba New Democrats don't care, more bureaucrats is more union members is more New Democrat voters.
The province has stagnated for years, not that the Conservatives were any better.
As for the Liberals!!!
AIDS on all their houses.
A little harsh for our Manitoban friends.. Send them a message that this increase has actually decreased the amount of tax dollars you collect.. Black market and under the table cash jobs can roll back the tax rate faster than a election..
But they still will try from time to time..
Smokers drop off the grid and support your local Reserve.. Nothing generates larger crocodile tears than no smokers in Manitoba.. A government investigation picking up cigarette butts off the street to see where this illegal contraband comes from.. Only to find out tobacco is part of native heritage and they can't do anything about it..
Good times in Commieville..
Jay, you get the picture. People with limited funds or who are just frugal and against grasping, bloated, big-spending government WILL FIND A WAY to bypass that increased PST. The barter system (trading skills), home and garage sales, junk swaps and online deals are reactions to more and more taxation in all its forms.
Every dollar taken out of the consumers pocket is a dollar less they will have to spend. Not rocket science but something most politicians really seem to have difficulty with. Cutting back on bureaucracy is a completely alien concept once the election is over.
I wonder how sales of big budget items are doing in Kenora and Moosomin?
Off topic but important poll alert on CTV. Is Harper right or wrong not to adress the UN general assembly. Running 50/50 now.

When asked by reporters, the government spokesperson said they expected no repercussions because after all,it was only a "one cent on the dollar" increase.
Changing the rate from 7% to 8% is, of course, a 14.29% increase.
Why isn't there a single reporter who can use a calculator?
favill, oldidiot, and Jay, exactly.
The main problem is that the free lunch crowd believe the socialist liars, and the statist crowd want everyone to be dependent on the government to continue to garner the votes. Another problem is that Winnipeg, which is full of socialists, has the majority of voters.
Even a number of 3rd, 4th and 5th generation Canadian Mennonites that are heavy into the "peace at any cost" ideology, similar to the United Church crowd, support the NDP. Sad that they have forgotten what Lenin and Stalin did to their compatriots in the Soviet Union.
After federal elections take a look at the parties listed on the ballot and you will discover that there are a surprising number of votes for Communist, Marxist-Leninist, etc candidates.
Every year we have a nutty Academic or political "conservative tell us a Provincial PST would be good for Alberta & that it would not increase. This proves the nevr changing lies of these idiots. Alberta will revolt if they bring in a provincial tax. But the socialist tax eaters keep on floating the balloons, contrary to all reason.
Replacing the income tax with a PST would be extremely beneficial for Alberta.
We have anarchy, and that anarchy is government.
Revnant, do you really expect socialists to listen to reason when it contradicts their ideology? Despite the many examples that lower taxes and less government results in a more prosperous country (as demonstrated by Coolidge, JFK, Reagan, Thatcher) they cling to the myth that government creates prosperity.
"Replacing the income tax with a PST would be extremely beneficial for Alberta."
Cripes not only are you a fence sitting LIV,you are a Kenyesian! Even the UN lawyer,REDfraud, knows a PST is literal death in AB.And Alberta does not want to be hauled down to the have-not rating of the ROC.Cause guess what? Then there is nothing left, and we go the way of the PIGGS,Morontario,Queerbec,Unionmantobe,Before Common Sense, and the USSA. Thanks, but f&*k you.
I am fortunate enough to travel to Alberta frequently for work, all major purchases are made there. Had enough of "Eco taxes" (added taxes on electronics, and light bulbs - which the PST is applied to yes a tax on a tax). When I can I buy building materials there also, along with whatever sundries our household needs. Generally before a trip we'll sit down and make a list of the stuff we need, and I'll pick it up out west.
Wish I could do that with groceries also....
No but one can wish on a star.
Increased traffic to North Dakota has been noticed.
Is your ignorance congenital or learned? Cuz you have no idea what a Keynesian is apparently.
"The main problem is that the free lunch crowd believe the socialist liars, and the statist crowd want everyone to be dependent on the government to continue to garner the votes."
True enough, Ken. But there's another category that utterly defies logic: small business owners who are dyed-in-the wool Liberals. Too bloody stupid to see (or too fundamentally dishonest to admit) that a drop in the average guy's disposable income is not a good thing for business.
When The Dildo announced his intention to introduce the HST in Ontario a few years ago, a local pub owner told me that it was a good thing for two reasons: (a) it would be revenue neutral, and, (b) it would lessen his yearly admin costs.
I pointed out that my wife and I stood to lose another $960 per year from our disposable income because of his beloved HST - and I told him he had just helped make our decision about where to cut our discretionary spending. We have never been back.
The HST is a huge improvement over the previous system which taxed business inputs. That's just a fact.
Sure.
Sure, any tax that screws consumers in favor of business just has to be better. Question is for whom ?
