jour·nal·ist
[jur-nl-ist]
noun
1. a person who practices the occupation or profession of journalism.
2. a person who keeps a journal, diary, or other record of daily events.
There. Was that so hard? Government….ptooey.
I’m sure I’m being simplistic about it, government must limit your freedom so that they can keep you free.

Those explicitly excluded from protection include those “whose principal function, as demonstrated by the totality of such person or entity’s work, is to publish primary source documents that have been disclosed to such person or entity without authorization.” Glenn Greenwald, please contact your lawyer.

  1. “These people would have to have the “primary intent to investigate events and procure material in order to disseminate to the public news or information.” Opinion journalists might not be covered.”
What is an “opinion journalist”? Sounds like most of the columnists in the MSM.
It’s always a good idea to let the State regulate anything and everything, though, keeps it all above board.

  2. And the same people in the media who are (likely) cheering it on would be APPALLED to have it used against them, if power changes hands.
Of course, power ALWAYS changes hands, eventually. You would think they’d oppose it as a simple matter of self-interest. It’s a shame that a journalism degree doesn’t require enough of an intellect to reach this conclusion.
I’m torn between wanting a conservative government that would prevent (or, if necessary, repeal) it, and a GOP government with leaders that had enough balls to use the liberals’ weapons against them. The thought of liberal media talking heads being dragged off by the thought police would be very satisfying for the few minutes before horror overtook my satisfaction. It might almost be worth it. Almost.
Come to think of it, though, if the GOP had balls, they’d be conservative. Maybe I should just stick to hoping for the first.

  3. Yep, you need the state organ grinders to regulate journalism, so you can turn out such celebrated beacons of freedom as Pravda, Der Sturmer, NYTimes; and more lickspittle Lame Stream Media, to carry water for whatever the party line of the day may be…
Critical thinking is not required, FORWARD!

  4. “Journalist” – a legally protected propagandist loyal to the tenets of marxism who
supports any and all initiatives of the Democratic Party and those to the left of same.
Must also oppose all political initiatives and movements opposed by said Party et al.

  5. As I said this is an attempt to shut up any Blogers, or news not already censored by the “official” media. It keeps an Elite the elite as well.Being Obama’s dogs to call, the fact people didn’t fall into line for a new war is what has promoted this.
In Obama land, more free speech under attack.
This legislation is designed by the lame duck media so they become picked government moles. They can now become an official caste with political protection. Thus limiting any competition against them. To continue their hegemony of news for Obama, leftists, “progressives”, Liberals. Mean while this will open up investigations on bloggers by the corrupt Justice department by the censors. To stifle any dissent against the Muslim agenda. In the end its to justify isolating Americans from any dissenting views.

  6. The Chicago political cabal moves to remove 1st amendment rights from anyone who is not s state toady. This is a direct attack on the new/alternative media by an Amerikan fascist regime.

  7. Time to move to large scale encryption. I hate encryption because I always lose passwords and am really good at coming up with unguessable passwords. Have a few computers I can no longer get into unless I wipe the hard drives just because I found some really good passwords to use for super user access.
If the statist morons want the names of sources, give them to them. Just make sure that every such name was encrypted with the private key of the user and the source. Thus, in order to decrypt the name, one would require the source of the information to provide their public key. The “non-journalist” would provide the statist goons with a copy of the name of the source decrypted with their public key but it would require the source to provide their public key to produce cleartext. One can refuse to provide the name of the source by using the 5th Amendment which is part of the US constitution and any government that attempted to circumvent this would be in violation of the constitution and hence have no legal standing. It seems that the statists are just itching to start a new American revolution; one which they are going to lose unless they expect that decades of public schooling have neutered several generations of Americans.
Strong public key encryption is designed to frustrate the efforts of statists to peer unlawfully into the lives of those they perceive as their subjects. Show these morons with delusions of grandeur the contempt that they deserve.

  8. Loki they have already acted to make encryption an illegal military device which citizens csnnot use – this statute stands for messages sent outside the US borders – it would take very little for the DC fascists to make it apply to domestic encrypted traffic – we ARE in a multi-generational war against terror, and encryption is a tool domestic terrorists would use to stay hidden from NSA blanket surveillance. After all, the entire definition of “terrorist” has been expanded by the fed goon squads to include those who value privacy, freedom of speech/dissent and resent losing both to false flag security hysteria.

  9. Occam, this attempt to ban encryption runs smack into the first Amendment. I have a book published in the US which gives, in print, the complete DES algorithm. It is considered to be an offence to export the DES algorithm in the form of a working program, but a US court ruled that the EFF could publish this book internationally as they were just exercising their first amendment rights to freedom of speech.
Every attempt to ban encryption within the US will run afoul of the constitution and, should the statists attempt to perform unconstitutional acts, a lot of them will be shot. Given the presence of massive EEPROM memories in the form of USB flash drives, all individuals have access to completely unbreakable encryption — a one time pad. One just needs to fill a USB flash drive with random numbers (preferably produced from a radioactive source and Geiger counter) and give a copy of it to a person one wants to communicate with. Then, all that would be needed would be a PGP encrypted message giving the index on the USB drive and the length of the message that follows. The encryption is just a simple XOR of the random numbers on the USB drive with the plaintext message. One time pads have been proven mathematically to be completely unbreakable. Given the disdain that NSA spooks now show for actually getting away from a computer and getting into the field, one time pad flash drives would provide perfect encryption unless one fell into the hands of the NSA. Given the tiny size of SD cards, one could easily hide the data in a way which would require a very determined physical search; again, not a talent that the keyboard warriors have. Any computers used in such encrypted communication would never be connected to the internet and would have data transferred to them via USB flash drives for maximum security.

  10. It’s encouraging – the budget is balanced, Iran, Syria and Afghanistan are under control, employment is back to normal levels, the IRS has been brought to heel, and we have both victory in the war on drugs and a world class educational system. So defining journalist is all that is left for the government to do.
