Seems fair - j-school grads have been damaging journalism's reputation for years;
Admission to the University of Ottawa's journalism program has been suspended for the coming academic year after a damning report found the program to be "profoundly troubled" and even damaging to the university's reputation.
From the comments: "This article gives no sense of what the core problems are with the journalism program. Why was a review commissioned and why are the findings scathing?"

I bet its riddled with anti-Semitism, Marxism, to how to become Promoters of the State. Not reporters on the State.
To even how to use English.
They will never close down. Because Education is less about learning, than a business for an entrenched Elite.
Huge salaries to them, while milking Students.
Its why there was no oversight for 12 years. Its just another well of money.
No changes will really happen. Its about money, not text books.
The only thing this is happening now is . I figure no one is hiring their students. Even the Marxist papers because of a poor product. No individuality or talent coming out. Just boring conformity to rote Narrative.
Why the h*** does anyone need a "journalism" school? What do the students get -- a crash course in world history, politics, philosophy, plus advice on how to write the front-loaded column? If someone doesn't already have an idea about all of these subjects, a university course isn't going to help him or her.
Let's see now. Former Lieberal Justice Minister Allan Rock is president, former Jean Chretien appointed GG Michaelle Jean is Chancellor and three years ago the students of Ottawa U supported human rights by preventing Ann Coulter, who they disagree with, from speaking. How exactly can OU's reputation be further damaged?
Journalism course: Old Indian word for "false smoke signal school".
Agreed. One cannot tarnish a rusted blade.
From the article's comments:
"Hands down the worst decision I ever made was taking Journalism at Algonquin College." That sentence is three words too long. Should have ended after the word Journalism.
You forgot the most vital course topics: how to re-write press releases from Librano and Bay Street fronts, how to pass off month-old scoops by patriots blogging on their lunch breaks as your own, and how to slander patriots without getting your paper sued for what remains of its net worth.
What were the major problems?
Were some of the students still telling the truth at times?
Or not showing enough originality in their news fabrications?
Easy one.
All of the above.
P*mps for progressiveness too kind a word.
Dick, you missed the acting class on how to keep a straight face while telling Canadians a lardass like Chief Spence is on a hunger strike and how to fake tears and put a catch in their voice while supposedly fearing for her life while she scarfs down fish soup like Bottomless Pete.
Page didn't load in my browser so had to view source to read article. Communications most useless course offered by university. Most "communication" students when I attended U of zero were busy making sure they spoke English and French well enough to be given snivel servant translator jobs. Personally never had desire to become member of snivel service. Such "communication" students strong supporters of nanny state and never had any desire to work in any other capacity. This was in 1970's and expect that attachment to statist teat far stronger now. Expect same of students taking useless "journalism" course. Best to train students planning on taking such courses fundamentals of cash register operation and taking fast food orders at much lower cost to taxpayers.
I expect this will be the case of many other majors. If the academic benchmark has been set so that anyone can pass no matter how ovine, the future will be a dark, scary place with fewer people knowing how to work fire extinguishers.
Journalism School: where idealists become trained to be Leftist, Marxist purveyors of all things Collective.
I can't wait to hear what Herr Dr Miller has to say about this...
(j)urnalism is like sex scandals, infested by too many Joos!
So some bright lights have determined there's a problem when the public has caught on to what encompasses a degree in journalism when the end products are spinmiesters and propagandists for the Left?
J Skool? Problems?
How tough can it be to run a daycare
for ($)trust($)($)fund($)($)babies($)
and pol offspring?
Ohhhhhhh.
College-trained (indoctrinated) journalists have changed the very nature of the media - Media (under the direction of journalist-statists) has abdicated its role as a check on government power - the 4th estate has essentially become part of the power structure - this is why you see the transition from media careerists into politics so often. The careerist statists become Journalists because they are too radical or lazy to access the electoral system to make changes to public policy as an elected representative - they just work the soapbox of the media to push their agendas. The result is not only a media which is partisan and democratically destructive but a media which becomes king makers and pimp their influence out to political parties and special interests.
The media no longer informs us - it preaches to us and distorts reality in favor of its pet agenda. That agenda, these days seems to be police state collectivism and transnational socialism and ultimately, globalism (AKA global governance)
The good thing is theMSM is losing a younger generation to alternative media which (at least at this point) if free enough from special interest control to produce a wealth/diversiy of news/opinion/dialogue.
The long article was obviously written by a journalism graduate as it was several pages of BS and we were never told what the problem was.
Was this written by one of the graduates?
If so, explains a lot!
"Damaging to the university's reputation"..? That's like saying that the tub running over in one of the 1st Class berths was deleterious to the Titanic's buoyancy.
