New Study Shows That Dogs Use Color Vision After All;
...researchers have long believed that dogs seldom rely on colors to discriminate between objects, instead looking solely at items' darkness or brightness to do so. But a new experiment indicates that this idea, too, is a misconception.
As described in a paper published yesterday in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B, a team of Russian researchers recently found that, at least among a small group of eight dogs, the animals were much more likely to recognize a piece of paper by its color than its brightness level--suggesting that your dog might be aware of some of the colors of everyday objects after all.

Dogs have two color-receptive cones in their eyes (green and blue) - of course they see color, and by extension, of course they use it. Any scientist who has suggested otherwise is a fool.
Lacking a third cone (red), the range of colors they can see is extremely limited - but there is a distinct difference between limited and nonexistent!
Oh,oh.So are the race baiters now going to be crying that dogs are racist between white and black? i.e. white owners have dogs trained against blacks? Would not surprise me one bit.And the LIV's(which includes politicains) will lap it up.
Again...we are so fubared.
So does this mean I need to dress more stylishly around my dog? Or at least match?
just
black is the LACK of color....just sayin!!!!
sorry...NME666...black is a color
Learn something new every day. Well put Alyric
More "research" crap. Most of these researchers probably spent time looking at K9 eye balls under a microscope and made decisions on what they were pretty sure they could glean from vivisection.
I had two Rotties who had a collection of those colored rubber balls with the nubbies al around them. I would line them up on the floor - blue, green, yellow, red, black, pink - and ask for each ball by color. Exactly the same ball - different colors and when I asked for the YELLOW ball they'd bring me the yellow ball.
Researchers need to get out of their damn labs a little more often. They'd "discover" stuff the rest of us have known about for centuries.
Kate you will have to dress in your most beautiful yellow outfit,
demand control with a yellow leash,
and you will win The Westminster Kennel Club Annual Dog Show.
See,
there is a secret for everything..
What's next? Discovering that they do indeed play poker?
Video: Has a piece of Jesus Cross been found in Turkey?

Well, I've know for a long time that dogs can distinguish colour. This is the 2nd German Shepherd I've had that reacts to things that are yellow.
All I have to do is say the word "trudeau", and he goes for a dump.
My dear wife would probably tell you that coaching was involved - but she's just suspicious by nature.
realy now justy my boy, black is the lack (or absence of any of the base frequencies) of color, white is the full spectrum, and that's grade 6 science
Sorry Justthinkin, Black is not a colour nor is white.
Yeah well, Brian Griffin drives a car obeying traffic lights (usually), watches TV, smokes pot and drinks martini's, dates hot chicks...... Why, you could say he's just like us!
Sorry, but who are you going to believe, a bunch of Russian researchers or Family Guy?
Well my girl has a red blanket that she sleeps on and if I yell "Get the Liberals!" she shakes that blanket in her teeth for all it is worth...ya think we should get another hobby besides coaching the dog Jamie?
Just a nice story:

Now contrast that with that of his cat:

whooops...upon re-reading,I stand corrected.Mea culpa.
Science is finished. I was just listening to one of the Massey lectures on CBC radio, (a mistake, I know). The lecture featured a black South African windbag with a beautifully cultured Oxford accent, who wove together a phantasmagoric pastiche of arguments, including his race, Apartheid, the persecution of Gallileo, Christian Science and global warming, to arrive at the thesis that the physical sciences must become socially informed, (ideologically driven), in order to better serve the evolution of humanity.
When gasbags like this are taken seriously, we're all in trouble.
Christopher Ivey:
What you describe is postmodern science. Since reality is subjective, we may as well shape the truth into what is politically desirable.
To call it perverse would be charitable.
The good news is that reality does not appear to be subjective. Indeed it insists on intruding on our beliefs no matter how desperately we hold to them.
Does this mean that if dogs ever drive cars, they will proceed through a gray light?
Color receptors(cones, rods etc) are just a theory until they successfully transplant a dog's eye into a previously sighted human being and that person tells us what they see through it.
Doctors/scientists regularly pretend to know more than they know and speak with more authority than they actually have.
