NEW DELHI — A series of explosions rocked one of Buddhism’s holiest sites in eastern India on Sunday morning, an attack that officials called an act of terrorism….The soaring main temple, constructed in the fifth or sixth century, is near the Bodhi Tree, where Buddha is said to have attained enlightenment..

“When conservative-backed austerity policies began to ravage Greece in 2010, the suicide rate shot up by 18 percent,” Hartmann wrote... (Liberal radio host Thom) Hartmann, who previously floated a theory that giving hyperactive children Ritalin could turn them into conservatives, continued: “Conservative economic policies, from austerity to sequester to Reaganomics, kill people.”

“Now that the science is in, and irrefutable, it’s time to wake Americans up to this deadly con game,” he wrote. (Emphasis mine.)

The gravel road cops are on a roll this long weekend. Better make sure you don't have a tail light out, wouldn't want to get shot or tasered to death. I for one am grateful they've kept the streets safe for the heroin dealers that supplied my 14 year old cousin in her rural junior high school.

China built a replica of Paris. They probably found out too late that Paris is considered the rudest city on the planet and French tourists only bring joy when leaving. Chinese are very polite. What were they thinking ?

Max. As a retired Gravel Road Cop I ask, would you prefer that the cop just wades in and likely gets the crap beat out of himself by the perp, who by the info in the article had quite a history of lawbreaking and violence. You do know that when an officer is confronted with a violent situation he literally has split seconds to make a decision and act on it. I was there for over 20 years dealing with this kind of stuff. You don't get to call a time out and you don't get a second chance. You either win or you lose. Drug crazed perps can be insanely strong and can overpower multiple officers. If as a cop you lose, then the perp can move on to the next victim. People that go crazy and don't or won't submit to an arrest are asking for the cops to use whatever level of force is needed. All he had to do was surrender. I wouldn't be surprised if drugs were found in his system. By the way, cops have the right to not get s**t kicked and to go home to their families at the end of shift.

mike, what's your take on tasing Sammy Yatim on the TTC after being shot 9 times.

'You do know that when an officer is confronted with a violent situation he literally has split seconds to make a decision and act on it"

Gee Mike, you mean like in the Robert Duckanski killing at YVR. My nephew is a cop and he told me later that one of the reasons why they tasered him was that he had an alcohol problem back in Poland. That was an interesting reason for the tasering. The only problem is they only found that out months after they murdered him. My nephew also told me that in any situation "they are in charge and you do as you are told or suffer the consequences". Poor old Duckanski didn't understand what they were telling him so without further adieu they killed him so yes-he suffered the consequences.

Unforunaly, that is what happens when you give cops the power of the Nazis. And we have nobody to blame but ourselves. When you get a cop who thinks they can wave a gun,and get you to give up all your rights, well,as I have said before,we are fubared.Be a good little slave.

Richfisher: I don't know a whole lot about the Yatim case. I know that 9 shots were fired. Did all 9 shots hit Yatim and if so where did they hit? If the majority of the shots were in the periphery ie: grazes, flesh wounds to arms legs hands etc, then they may not have been sufficient to incapacitate him to where he would no longer be a threat. Was he continuing to thrash about waving the knife after he went down? I'm certainly not going to approach a wounded, crazed perp with a knife in his hands, until the knife is gone or he is no longer able to pose a threat. A person who is hyped up on adrenaline can have amazing strength and can continue to fight even though gravely wounded. Stories from combat prove this point. Yatim was obviously worked up about something because his actions caused every other passenger to flee the transit trolley. Was he on drugs? I don't know but if he was, that complicates things by orders of magnitude. My training taught me that a person with a knife was extremely dangerous and could close the distance of 20ft and stab you faster than you can draw your sidearm and shoot. A human reaction time of .75 seconds, during which your brain processes the threat and your muscles react means you would need to have a sight picture of the perp at 2oft away, and discharge center of mass hits immediately to have a chance of stopping him before you got knifed. I've been there done that. I'm speaking from personal experience, both in being confronted by perps with knives, and in having had to use deadly force. I would invite all you who have so many ideas how a life threatening situation should be handled, to attend a police academy that has a threat simulator computer program, and you can strap on the sidearm and face the perps and see how difficult it is. Remember that when a cop is sworn in, he doesn't lose his right to self defence.

Please, can some one point out to me the last time the police actually saved some one from harm. Bogus so called terror plots don't count.... Anybody have the police actually help them? Inquiring minds want to know.

It seems pretty clear now why Major League Baseball would kick off its round of suspensions with Milwaukee outfielder Ryan Braun. Consider the suspensions announced yesterday. Would it be "profiling" to notice something that every one of the suspended players has in common? From MLB.com:

“In addition to Alex Rodriguez, who is appealing his suspension, the players who were handed 50-game suspensions that effectively end their regular seasons include

Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz
Tigers shortstop Jhonny Peralta
Mariners catcher Jesus Montero
Padres shortstop Everth Cabrera
Yankees catcher Francisco Cervelli
Phillies reliever Antonio Bastardo
Mets utilityman Jordany Valdespin

Minor Leaguers

Fernando Martinez
Jordan Norberto
Fautino de los Santos
Cesar Puello
Sergio Escalona

Blue Jays outfielder Melky Cabrera, Athletics pitcher Bartolo Colon and Padres catcher Yasmani Grandal, all of whom already have served 50-game suspensions as a result of their violations of the drug program stemming from their connections to Biogenesis, will not receive additional discipline.”

Coincidence, I'm sure.

I think Mark Steyn pointed out that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was found alive and not an unarmed stinking corpse in a boat because the owner did NOT listen to police commands and cower indoors.

David Chen was charged with "kidnapping" for grabbing the crackhead POS who was continually robbing him. The police made a deal with the, (anyone?) that's right, "crackhead" to "help" the harmless and helpful owner of the Mom and Pop supermarket get what's good for him.

Couple of weeks ago the 911 operator hung up on me as I followed a crackhead who had just smashed a car window and walked away with a brand new apple laptop from my street because I would NOT stop following the criminal. I got the computer back to the owner only because I DIDN"T do what the police commanded me to do.

I guess my post could come across as hating cops because they're cops. It's not true, and I want better cops. Some other time on some other thread we'll have it out.

BINGO!

In my life expirience I will trust a known crook long before I EVER trust a police officer. Ice Cube nailed-it regarding the police.

So long as there is a direct conflict of interest between the police force and the citizenry, hating cops is totally appropriate.

I find it interesting that there are people outraged at the police presence at the G20 and the way they handled security. The police knew full well that there were going to be professional agitators and anarchists present at the G20 which would threaten the safety of numerous world leaders and dignitaries. They prevented any harm to G20 attendees as was their job. People are also outraged that police in Vancouver were willing to let people freely assemble during and after game 7 of the Stanley cup finals. What happened? A number anarchists, and many "had too much to drink and were caught up in the riot people" joined in. So the police can't be proactive and prevent a major civil unrest at risk of being called nazis, but are then accused of not doing their job if things get out of hand. Make up your mind, what is it you want? Why don't you guys start calling out the criminals and anarchist and general all round $h*t disturbers. You know if people would just behave and act civilly there wouldn't be these problems. Well then you say, the anarchists etc are a minority, well the bad cops are a minority as well. They have a right to defend themselves from injury or death and in a lot of cases they only have split seconds to make a decision, they don't get to call a time out, they don't get a second chance. I've been there, done that and it is only by good fortune that I am able to type this today. There were many incidents I was involved in that could have resulted in my death it was that close. I honestly don't understand why anyone would want to be a cop today.

The police in this small town are RCMP. They are respected and well liked by the law abiding citizens. It's a crappy job at times and I'm darn glad there are people who will do it. They're not perfect; nobody is, and we could all do better. However the few mistakes they make more than balances the good they do. The next time you criticize the police ask yourself what it would be like if there were none.

Mike I'll see your link and raise you by mine: http://www.policemisconduct.net/

The Grey Lady. So is the point of this to go back and forth trying to one up each other? I sent you a link of an officer who was murdered responding to a domestic where he would be helping someone. You had asked if officers helped or saved people anymore. I personally know of an officer, (I worked with him in another community) in our local community who walked into the ocean to save a distraught women who drove her vehicle into the ocean to try kill herself. He did this at great personal risk.

When I was an officer, I helped many people in many ways, beyond what I was required to do. Yes I know that there are bad cops out there. The majority of cops are fine citizens who do a thankless job, at great personal risk, day in and day out. It is about time that they received some thanks and encouragement. It is also time that the criminals received the slagging they deserve. Our media (both entertainment & news) have made police officers bad guys, very much in the same way that TV and Hollywood have portrayed men and fathers as fools. The generation of boomers largely has instilled in their offspring a disdain for authority and police and as a society we are now reaping the fruit of the evil seed that was planted.

NDP politicians let loose at Vancouver gay parade. Intellectuals at their best.

This is a headshaker esp. considering it is the 21st century and is from a Canadian site.

The question starts with;
" I'm engaged to my cousin, which I didn't even know I was engaged to. I'm really unhappy with it..." and then gets a bit strange.

The answer starts with this common sense;
"If you do not wish to marry the man your parents have chosen, you have the right to reject it."

And then the going gets weird;
" If your fiancé’s mother has breastfed your brother, then your brother is considered her foster-son. However, the marriage prohibition, by virtue of breastfeeding, doesn’t extend to you as long as you yourself are not breastfed by your finance’ mother and he himself is not breastfed by your mother too."

Stay in the mid island, mike. You totally missed the point of my post.No one, including the state, has the right to take anybody else's life. You want to talk crap,I'm ex-military.Been there, done it.I highly doubt here in Canada, you had to take down a 9 year old with an AK-47,who was killing your buddy next to you, while you where trying to save both yourself, your buddy,AND the mis- directed kid with an assault rifle.I see him,and my bud every night when I go sleep.Go up to a dead kid and kick the rifle away from him.And no amount of time will change the fact I had to kill a 9 year old.
If the cop who shot that guy with the knife had to use his weapon NINE times, and then taser(??)he/she is quilty of murder. I was taught one shot, and to my horror, that's all it took. And he was not the only one. Both men, women, and children, and the last one was no easier then the first. 50 feet with a 9 mil, one, yes ONE shot, one kill. The crap you see in movies is just that,CRAP.You don't spray your fire all over hell and hope to hit something.Time that maybe you guys asked your bosses for some more time spent on the range. But then I guess ,unfortunatley,it would be UN-PC to learn how to kill efficiently. But you know something? We in the military actually go out of our way to try not to kill, but most times in combat reality rears it's ugly head. And yes,I was an Airforce rat who happened to be in the wrong(?) place at the right(?) time.
Nothing personal,sh!t happens. But to this day,and I'm 55,I can honestly say that if somebody was threatning me or my loved ones, they would be dead in half a heartbeat. And I would regret it till my dying day.Sometimes there is no other option.I would rather go through my own personnel hell, then lose somebody close to me.Just the way I am.

Oh.And I should also mention, that at 55,and failing eyesight,I can still knock off a 6 foot man target at 500 yards, with open sights, using a .303,10 out of ten times.Ummmm.I wonder if that's why all the deer have left my area(not counting my ex-airborne buddy who loves the bow).

Justthinkin: neither you or I know exactly what happened on that streetcar in Toronto. I'm content to let the authorities conduct an investigation and let the chips fall where they may. Whether the officer(s) was/were right or wrong will be determined. I do know this though. If you act wild and crazy with a knife, such that a large group of people feel they have to flee for their safety. Then you don't submit and surrender to lawful police authority. Then there is a very good chance that things will end badly for you. Right, wrong or indifferent that is a fact. I don't have any sympathy for the yute. Right now the media has judged and convicted the officer(s), without all the facts being known.

Regarding the taking of a life, there are circumstances where it is justified.
Self preservation and the protection of innocents are two cases where the use of deadly force is justified.

"Regarding the taking of a life, there are circumstances where it is justified.
Self preservation and the protection of innocents are two cases where the use of deadly force is justified."
Ok. I thought that was what I was saying. You just put it more to the point. And I think those are the ONLY two cases.Thanks.

You know Mike I used to think police were wonderful people who had the community and well being of the public uppermost in their mind.

I used to think they were upholders of the law, that law and enforcement were blind and handed out evenly.

I am sorry i just don't anymore, i see them as extensions of politicians and their fickle agenda. I see them as a clique who will not be disciplined by anyone, regardless of their actions. Police can and do get away with murder. Not saying all police are bad, but I have no trust in them or our so called justice system.

I'm sorry, I don't hate police, I just don't believe in their purpose , I have no confidence in them anymore.
