About Kate
Why this blog?
Until this moment
I have been forced
to listen while media
and politicians alike
have told me
"what Canadians think".
In all that time they
never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio - "You don't speak for me."

Russians & their supporters love to refer to Ukraine as "the Ukraine" -- sort of an insult to minimize it as a border area vs as an independent country.
The western media still says "the Ukraine" instead of "Ukraine". It is the norm thus supporting the status quo of the Soviet Union.
Well would you refer to Canada as "the Canada"? Well?
The word "the" can prove to be insulting.
Just a diversion topic that involves the word the
All th time in my entire life I'll ever save using th new symbol, I wasted reading th article...
Yeah well, all the Argies, I have met, refer to their homeland as "The Argentine".........
It's a cultural thing....why mess with it?
y r u surprised? (/sarc)
Shouldn't the header be "Honey I finished the Internet" ?
The boy definitely has waaaayyy too much time on his hands.
What's this clowns email? I want to send him a new symbol for "useless a**hole".
Real Yukoners call the Yukon, The Yukon. 'The' is definitive, meaning the only one, 'a' is indefinite. A place, person, or thing, not preceded by an article is a Proper noun and is assumed to be unique - thus capitalized and not preceded by an article. The "the" in 'the Ukraine' or in 'the Yukon' is a reference to a mindset of the inhabitants of a place as well as to the geographical place, itself.
I use @ (at) all the time now and the crossed swords symbol for battle saved me lots of time in history class - I would use the 'th'. I like shorthand.
Ho hum. Well, they can bloody well use thorn and eth as our forebears did, and as the Icelanders still do.
I did attempt, for a while, to use thorn in mathematical expressions, as one is always running out of letters, but found it made for difficult reading. If I'd been brought up on it it might have been different.
Evidence of people with way too much time on their hands.
well in Yukon Territory there are NDP mpps who go to a bar every friday evening and stand in a red square that is painted on the floor and chear the worst of communist governments that killed hundreds of millions of people that make the NAZI's seem like amateurs -- Stalin, Mao, Pol Pot, Ho Chi Minh, Mengistu Haile Mariam of Ethiopia. Is this right?
Communist / left wing regime kill more people that diasgarree with them -- is this were we are going with the hatred of Rob Ford?
The hatred in the mass media in the Toronto Red Star & CBC & CTV/Globe & Mail seems to reflect that hatred.
Where are we going in this society?
"The" hell you say!
It might be a good idea but I have no clue as to why ... However, while we are at it ... we should consider changing the word Mathis to Ass. Think of how much time Paul will save when signing his name. It may help him clue in on what he is.
Got a pic or link for your 4:08 PM,gerry. I'd like to see that. I tried google, and the Yukon NDP site, but nothing there. Unless I don't know the secret commie password.
I want to send him a new symbol for "useless a**hole".
Would a picture of Obama do the job?
This is bigger than the IRS political skulldugery, Bengazi, NSA snoping put all together.
Like using DDT for dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane, they need an abbreviation because "the" has become too difficult to spell.
I do not support this innovation.
"The" is one word I don't regularly screw up. Perhaps instead they could propose shortcuts for "in" "if" "at" "on".
What. It takes too long to write "da"? Da gubmint, da boyz, da banksters. Easy peasy.
How about a new symbol for the raised middle finger
Gerry from GTA: What the Hell are you talking about? Better send a bunch of good old cross burners up there from Prince George to straighten those damn commies out. I'll give Hedy Fry a call.
Either term 'the Ukraine' or 'Ukraine' is common among Ukrainian historians. The older Ukrainian historians use 'the Ukraine', younger ones use 'Ukraine'. The Ukrainian government in 1993 asked that the 'the' be dropped. Originally it was a term first used in the 1100s to describe the borderlands of Kievian Rus.
That said, I have on occasion been clobbered using the term 'the wife'. ;-)
"the" has become too difficult to spell
That would explain all the "teh"s I see around the innertubes.
As someone who was raised in "The" Yukon and lived all over the territory, I can attest to what you say. It was always "The" Yukon and I don't remember anyone ever questioning that.
The Yukon has been repopulated, this happened when the price of metals tanked in the mid 1980's and mines closed resulting in unemployment; instead of going on the dole, most real Yukoners moved south for employment. During this depressing time, the gument worker ilk and the welfare ilk elected a Dipper territorial gument. The Dippers went whole hog with 'new' Federal $ transfers to 'fundamentally change' the Yukon. Greenies and southern Dipper/Liberano/Blocista gument rejects were shipped up here , bag and baggage, on the Alberta/Ontario dime. The Public Service got union bonus's for gument toadys and gument workers; gument took over private enterprise and dumbed down the services (snow removal, building etc), the new union ground the Whitepass train into bankruptcy with the help of greenies who shut down the ore producing mines and rendered transport to the Skagway port via rail redundant.
The Yukon has been a greenie/progressive nest of regression ever since and as long as the southern provinces keep shoveling $$ into the dependent gument coffers it will regress even further.
There are, however some real Yukoners who still live here, by the skin of their teeth, these sparse souls still call the Yukon, The Yukon. We still know Robert Service's poetry and we still think of this huge territory as the last frontier, in our hearts.
The very repopulation trick that 'killed' the spirit of the Yukon is hell bent on doing the same thing to Alberta, IMO. The Yukon had a small population so the dirty job did not take long - we have more bans and rules and regulations than any other jurisdiction in Canada! Forty years ago the bars stayed open 24 hours, people could carry a drink from bar to bar, smoking was fine everywhere: banks, grocery stores, classrooms; anyone could stake a claim for 10 dollars and put up a shack and dig for gold, we were considered 'nearly citizens' of Alaska and many people lived there and/or worked there part time. The border was a formality. It was a great place to live because it was interesting, challenging and had many characters who were entertaining, informative and individuals worth knowing. The memories of the old days are the 'the' in The Yukon - it is a final act of defiance.
world metal prices and the cost of transportation, not the greenies, have killed every boom in The Yukon during the last 100 years or so.
Much simpler to dispense with "the" altogether. Is useless word with little information content. Also, typed much faster than less common words from my investigations of keylogger data with msec precision timing. First two characters utilize both hand's index fingers which have fastest speed given presence of extensor indicis muscle and intact corpus callosum. Kinetic melodies for common words executed far far faster than for polysyllabic words. Temporarily dispensed entirely with useless word taking up precious bits in 1980's model computers RAM. Other related words can also be omitted from English language with no change in information content. Considering English language imprecision (which drives me insane while wetware in compiler mode) can easily create symbology expressing class and instantiation of class. Would have been much more profitable use of time for creator of new symbol for useless word.
Appendage of useless word to "Ukraine" drove my father crazy and he made point of correcting anyone daring to utter prohibited phrase in his presence. Slavic languages do just fine without needing equivalent of useless word which, IMHO, improves precision.
How would it affect the "WTF" tag ?
It is rather concerning.
