Hundreds of major American corporations are shipping thousands of jobs overseas, according to an analysis of Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) filings made to the U.S. Department of Labor's Employment and Training Administration on behalf of the displaced workers.

About Kate
Why this blog?
Until this moment
I have been forced
to listen while media
and politicians alike
have told me
"what Canadians think".
In all that time they
never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio - "You don't speak for me."

I get in discussions about this all the time with my lefty friends. They attack corporations as evil crushers of humanity yet when I ask do they check labels for where a product is made or shop by price they mumble about trying to save money. Corporations are living entities and will do what they have to to survive. If it means building their product in a cheaper labour area to meet their home market they will do it. The reaction of politicians like Wynne is to raise the minimum wage just exacerbates the problem and further increases companies to move offshore.
You guys remember the snake thing from the other day? Kathleen Wynne swearing she's going to make the exotic pet owners of Ontario pay for those two little kids?
This is the other side of the equation. After every fluke accident and operator error some politician or apparatchik made a new rule. Been going on since the 1920s. Result, everybody who can is deserting North America.
It isn't the labor cost as much as the regulations. Intel outsources to China for one reason only: there is not enough money in the entire world to get a green field factory built in California. Can't be done. Because regulations.
In the article they say the outsourcing surge is past it's peak. They note that this is not because more companies are coming back to the USA. What they didn't say is that the reduction in outsourcing is because the majority of companies have already moved. What we are seeing now is the last holdouts finally giving up and either moving or going under.
Really, we should call this outsourcing thing by its real name: "Going Galt".
What a depressing list
Not to worry. All these jobs will be replaced with high paying green jobs. /s
I don't get it. With so few regulations, a non-intrusive government, and low taxes - why would you leave the USA?
Obama is great at creating jobs. In China
I recall an interview on FoxNews last winter with the head of BestBuy and another CEO. The BestBuy loved all the new regulations because no one would be able to ever start a new company like his, but on a personal level he thought the continuous mountain of new regulations were destroying the American economy one new job at a time.
alan, this is not just the fault of Obama. These job killing regulations have been under successive presidents who have given too much power to the bureaucracy, particularly the EPA. This is also true in Canada. Bureaucrats do not give a tinker's d*m about a growing private enterprise economy.
Btw, we just returned from a fourth visit to Europe and while they do have a high consumption tax rate, and more socialism in some ways, in my opinion they have many more small enterprises scattered throughout the cities and small towns, as well as more personal lifestyle choices without nanny telling you where you can do this or do that. Also, you can purchase a great bottle of wine for about $3 and smokes for half the price or less.
We had to visit a 24 hour clinic in the train station in Lucerne, Switzerland and paid about $250 for an examination, an x-ray and two prescriptions. I expect that this cost would be much higher in Canada or the US. Hopefully Blue Cross will cover some of this.
What else can you expect from a country that has 2% of the world's population and 50% of the world's lawyers?
If it's anything like Canada, many of the lawyers end up as legislators making up all the control-freak rules.
Absolutely,Phantom.
This has been happening since the 1980's.I first noticed the effects when I visited my wife's relatives in Peterborough when two of the biggest local employers, appliance manufacturers, moved to Mexico.
Anyone know what percentage of the work force is now paid by the government, directly or indirectly? In my home Province,Manitoba, they passed that point ,50%, in the early 80's.
China has state slaves who cannot complain - that is the 'business' Hussain & pals are interested in - and laying waste to USA and Canada are the 'end game' for that outfit, IMO. Do not look to the shredders of the Constitution to help Americans to be eagles when they can be made into turkeys with rules and regulations that clip their wings before they even attempt to fly.
Which is why the middle class is going the way of the Dodo bird. You simply can't shut down thousands of factories, kick millions of workers to the curb, turning them from productive tax paying cititzens into tax sucking liabilities and continue to function with a decimated tax base. Not rocket science.

Thanks Clinton, Bush and Obama.
Slave labour and dumping waste into the environment are cheap in other countries. That and Obama wouldn't be doing a good job of ruining the country if he was providing jobs.
Let's not forget Obamacare. What a job saver/creator that is!
hey, it's all good, at least that's they way it will sound once the "news in manufactured"
The only light at the end of this tunnel. Is that these displaced economical components become the seeds of a New civilization that will flower in new soil. By diffusion, Technological Urban culture may yet survive the Muslim Invasion. At least somewhere.
The absolute greed if not treason by these entities cannot be understated.
The people running these enterprises have no nation to call home. Only bank accounts.
Even the bank accounts are off shore. That's what makes this recession permanent. After all major recessions in our past, it was just a matter of re starting our factories and putting the working class back to employment. Now those factories are no longer in this country and that option is gone. Part time, McJobs and the service industries barely provide for survival. Government jobs at all levels do not help the economy and the only section of productivity not outsourced is the Military Industrial Complex which is also funded by a rapidly shrinking tax base. Presently 114 million taxpayers, declining annually. Almost 48 million on food stamps. 23 million working for various levels of government. The economic Titanic is sinking and there is nothing that can stop that. Math never lies. The only question now is when it all falls apart.
