A long time ago a wise old lady told me that if you took away people's belief in God,they'd scramble to find a substitute. I scoffed at the idea.She was right,I was wrong.

In the rant above the Obama supporter is all about the 'trying' aspect of the Obama effort. What is actually accomplished becomes almost secondary. Progressives in the USA or Canada are the same. An effort is good enough. Past failures can be explained.
My thought is that in many cases progressives support the people they do because in a 'touchy feely' way it let's them take the easy out. If a issue doesn't have to have serious critical thought then the solutions become much simpler, right? I also question the ability of the vast majority to employ any critical thought. The education system doesn't teach it and real world experience is being muted by societies social support system.

What you wrote reminds me of a conversation I had with a longtime friend the other day. "Carl" is in his late 40's and a successful engineer & businessman. He's been happily married for 27 years and has two teenage children.
We got to talking about all of the recent violence & deaths in Egypt. He told me that he tries to avoid following the news too closely because it just makes him upset. He then went onto say that what's happening in Egypt is why he shuns religion ... ALL religion ... because if often tends to propagandize and pervert the ability of people to think clearly and use common sense. I challenged him on this and asked if he differentiated between different religions. He does not and feels they're all equally bad.
I disagreed with him on the notion that all religions are the same and then said, "If we're to agree that all religions use propaganda to make people think a certain way and thus control them, we must all recognize that there's another 'religion' out there, which MANY people follow these days. It's not focused on the worship of God but rather the worship of Big Government. It's called 'Leftism' but is also known as 'Socialism'. So if you're going to condemn religion for controlling people's thoughts in less than positive ways then you must also include Leftism as well." Carl, who is a right-wing capitalist, didn't disagree, but I don't think the connection really sunk through to him. At least not yet.

The sad thing is that the beast has infiltrated our western societies while the eastern block is trying to shed it, and we may have to live through the horrors of the 20th century as well. What is really sad for me is that one of my own daughters believes a lot of this and that nirvana is just around the corner if only society can get rid of conservatives.

NEM666 - and you clearly show your biases. I wonder if you have ever even discussed anything with someone who a fundamental Christian? And how possibly could it matter to you that they don't believe in evolution (although many are not so cut and dried on the issue)? I'm not aware of any public policy issue that depends on the acceptance of evolution as a fact. Yes fundamentalists are disinclined to believe that same sex marriage is really not a marriage and the abortion is wrong but those are beliefs that people are still allowed to have and unless they take actions to harm gays etc, you are still allowed to believe things based on your religion. And I suspect that if you ever discussed the concept and foundation of marriage with anyone from a fundamental religion (which is just not a Christian denomination) you might have a greater understanding on what a marriage is (and is not - unfortunately most people entering into martial bliss have a very limited understanding of the concept which might explain the divorce rate).
I think, Sgt., that you may be on to something. My stepdaughter is an RN who works on the neurology floor of the local hospital. Many of her patients are, of course, elderly people with dementia etc., or mainly middle aged and elderly people with strokes. However, her floor also sees drunks and druggies. She says that the druggies are the worst patients imaginable - irresponsible, nasty, self-centred, illogical, without any sense of consequences, entitled. The drunks are trying but most of them don't have much brain by the time she sees them. Now my stepdaughter is not very political but listening to her I found that her description of the typical druggie fits the typical leftist to a tee.

Those things are stuff the conservatives freak out over, even though his birth certificate has been verified, death panels are not real, and Bengazi, while a failure is nothing even remotely compared to the failure that was 9/11.

Three thoughts:
1) In psychiatry, people who were molested as children go one of two ways: either they freely admit it, and work to recover, or create an entirely false happy childhoods and deny anything bad ever happened. The problem is, if any fact is presented which might pop that bubble, the people who chose the false-reality route will react very violently - because it's threatening, quite literally, their whole world. And in psychiatry, every now and then, they're unable to deny it, and then they either try to commit suicide or become clinically depressed. Liberals who have built up an entirely false view of the world: religions, people, economics, politics are all too complicated, so all they need is a god-like figure who will solve all - are going to react VERY strongly to anyone who points out that the person they've pinned all their hopes and dreams on actually has feet of clay (or might even be corrupt).
2) Mark Twain once said: "if you want a man to love you, make him feel like he's thinking. If you want him to hate you, make him think". Making a Leftie think about the contradictions in their world-philosophy, or pointing out new things, is not going to make them love you.
3) I have read that there was a study where a certain percentage of people are simply "religious" - they have a deep-seated need to worship something. If it's not a God of some sort, it'll be Mao, or Stalin, or Hitler, FDR, or Obama. So the only thing you can do is try to get people into a religion less damaging than worshiping a political figure who loves power. That'll have to start at a young age - with children of Liberals, probably want to go with Buddhism, not Christianity.
