A New Month, A New Protest

Earlier this year, "activists" tried to force the Pidgin restaurant, located in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside (DTES), to shut down. Now another restaurant, Cuchillo, started by fledgling entrepreneurs John Cooper and Stuart Irving, is facing a similar fate. Here's the way Cooper described the situation in an interview last month:

"We're just a couple of guys who put in every cent we had...and built a restaurant. And now we're trying to focus on its operations."

One of the protest leaders is a young woman named Kim Hearty. She's also a member of the Executive of Vancouver's COPE party. A recent investigative piece into Hearty and her comrades is most informative.

If you're on Facebook and would like to show Cuchillo a little support, feel free to give them a 'Like'.

You have to be gob smacked at the disdain Van city council has for small business (the life blood of any community) by taking this radical fringe caterwauling seriously they are validating the corrosive influence of anti free market Luddites. People of Vancouver would be well advised to sweep council clean and take their city back from the sinecured morons who are handing the city's prosperity over to destructive nihilist forces.

Everyone always dances around what these activist's invariably are;

Communists

It is right up there with the conviction that the Stanley Cup riot was all about the loss of a hockey game. Planned and directed by the anarchist who live off the public teat in Vancouver. Easier for the public to believe that it was drunk hockey fans.

In days past this human waste would have been flushed away and the town cleaned up.

The comments at the link to "Gastown Gazette" are indicative of the type of people who are the activists in the DTES.

They are stuck on living off the taxpayer forever and have no intention whatsoever of trying to help themselves. They are leeches.

There is no hope of ever rehabilitating the DTES.They are content to be ghetto dwellers sponging off taxpayers, and have the temerity to complain when (tax paying) entrepreneurs try to breathe some life into the area.

I bet not one of these activists ever applied for a job at one of those restaurants.

Only one phrase describes these people behind protests. :Poverty Pimps.
The want to make their fortunes on the back of the poor.
In the name of social Justice.
Its in a way like the United Church. Its now run by atheists, Marxists, agnostics. Waiting for the day it finally collapses, to cash in on generations of people who built those churches , but ceded the land & properties to a board that now is anti-Christian.
Run by social engineers, eaten within by opportunists.

If Kimmy is a paid officer of this or any other
marxist NFP claque in this "circle ----", it opens
up if there are interesting legal liability questions
or charitable status questions worthy of attention.

Right on, Revnant Dream!!

This year 200 of these once great churches will close their doors in Canada. Pity.

Protest that.

Don't these idiots realize that these places will bring jobs and...oh. Never mind.

This silly women claims to be helping low income people find housing. It is because of (possibly well intentioned) idiots like her that rents are high for the low income's. As a landlord who has had experiences with all the so called "renter rights act" and the renters who know these rights and how to use them. what I have found out the hard way is you have to charge low income/bad credit renters more to compensate for the risk, same as a bank will charge higher risk loans more interest. I now insist on a signed credit/criminal record check permission form from applicants and now charge lower rents, and vet out the bad credit risks/ie low income and get much better tenants.

Alan - what you say is based upon experience, and the willingness to learn from your own (and others) mistakes. It is what differentiates the Conservative from the Liberal/Progressive. Conservatives value experience over theory. Progressives value theory over experience. That's why Progressives are willing to try the same thing again and again, because they "know" it should work, therefore there's something wrong with reality (or someone evil has sabotaged their plan).

Pidgin won and I expect the good guys to come out ahead here too. Is COPE the major party of Van city council? I thought they were a small but still disturbingly large faction.
