"....hopefully a pro-Western Syria." isn't enough of a good reason for any intervention.

Given the West keeps trying to install the Bush doctrine and promote likely to fail democracies I don't like the odds of adding a more radical regime to the region.

Yes, we constantly hear calls to intervene in Syria by people who apparently haven't learned the lessons of Iraq, Libya, or Egypt. While it is certainly a human tragedy (70,000 killed?), the US and Canada governments should NOT be in the business of righting all wrongs.

Couple of points we need to remember:

1. Iran is the "world's primary state sponsor of terror" (G. W. Bush)
2. Hezbollah is "Iran in Lebanon".

Syria is the go-between among the two.

Nuke Iran and the rest will fall into place.

The big mistake was failing Lebanon in the 1960s.

You can thank France and Russia for the rest.

The only thing to do now is to stand back and let them burn.

Other than thwarting Iran's desire to circle an alliance of countries around Saudi Arabia what difference does it really make who controls Syria. Even the Israelis don't know who to back. Whether it is Shites or Sunnis they all want to kill Westerners. I have little faith that the end game for Islam is world domination.

We can't ask for democracy and then demand that people we like get elected.

Stir up the wogs . . They hate each other so it is easy to get them going.

Then sell them weapons and ammo so they can kill and wound each other.

Make a nice profit while they go at it and leave the civilized world to get on with normal life.

It is a simple foreign policy.

I like your idea best Fred.

Fred, my sentiments exactly. The West should take a stand now and turn islam in on itself, Nigeria, Thailand, Europe, whatever. Support those fighting islam and let the muslims kill each other. There is so much oil and natural gas around we could stop importing fuel from the middle east and let them starve themselves or at least stop Saudi Arabia funding Wahhabism in our countries.

Brian Lilly had Raymond Ibrahim, a Coptic Christian, on last night discussing muslims killing, burning churches and driving out Christians from places like Egypt where Christians vastly predated muslims yet the MSM does not tell of this ongoing battle. I have ordered his book, Crucified Again.

Why is this stupid Captcha have hash lines that make it hard to read? Okay, I get you have to enter numbers and letters but why have any background at all. I see this control on other sites but the text is on a white background and easy to enter.

The entire Bush-Obama foreign policy to "democratize" these retrogressed mid-east countries has been a vast costly, dismal failure. I see many thinking conservatives have come to grips with that and the cheer-leading for military intervention a decade ago has changed to a quiet realization that you cannot "free" people who don't wish to be free. The culture there accepts modern technology but resists our political and social systems to embrace atavist tribal-kingdom systems over modern constitutional democratic, rights based social systems.

I have held this opinion since Bush announced his Iraqi and Afghan occupation plans (and Canada's involvement). I was broadly reproached by my conservative friends for not joining the pro invasion echo chamber of the time. But I had the benefit of having friends and family who worked or had done missionary work in these nations. They all came home disillusioned with the impact their work had.

At the root of the problem is the oil-rich ME nations which are essentially regressive medieval "kingdoms" which the hereditary monarchs keep in regressed civil systems for their own benefit. Part of that agenda involves the funding and promotion of radical Islamist repressive governing/cultural systems. In nations which have moved beyond monarchy there have been an endless line of "strongmen" rise to power who maintain their power by making treaties with local warlords, tribes and bandits by allowing them operate as they wish (repressing and fleecing the local populace and engaging in contraband trade [drugs/guns/slaves]) in their local regions. This or they will assist the majority tribe in the country in persecuting the minority tribe/tribes. These systems are so old and so entrenched, they know nothing else and expect no better than the inherent cruelty/injustice these systems produce. Pair that up with the jihadi death cult mindset the new radical theology instills in the population and you have a people who are determined to live with ancient, uncivil, superstitious social systems or die fighting change - it is a very xenophobic, volatile and tribalistic culture.

Things haven't changed culturally and politically since Rudyard Kipling and T.E. Lawrence wrote about the region. We are talking about an area of the world which has been resisting invaders who wish to change them since the Persians, Alexander and the Mongols - none had success in long term occupation because of constant revolt. No modern age army has been able to invade and occupy the region. The Turks learned this, the Brits learned this, the Russians learned this and now the US has learned this.

Some people just simply do not wish to be dragged, kicking and screaming into "modern democracy" - they should be left to their own devices - but the globalists running western economics and military will not have it that way. Their egos and hegemony have no limit - except now they are learning the hard way - after squandering our money and military on hopeless causes.

The People like Obama who call for intervention are more concerned about spreading Sharia Law , along with Jew hatred than for any Humanitarian reason. Whenever these factions call for aide & than win. The first casualty is Democracy in any form. The implementation of strict Sharia. Than an Islamic state persecuting all minorities. as I've said before Obama has done more for Islam than most Caliph's historically. These new Muslims States immediately start to kill Christians or any other religions in the Region. We are on the wrong side . Fred rights. Let them fight among the various factions of Islamic creeds. Mean while most others will be left along. Why create more Islamic regimes?
The World was a safer place when Iraq & Iran where at war for 7 years.

Any "intervention" done should consist of a medical tent for children. There. We've done our good deed for the day. In the absence of a sane leader in the vacuum left by Assad and the rebels, any other kind of intervention will not end well.

I am pretty sure Assad will fall and it will be to our benefit. Intervention still doesn't make sense. Our enemies are killing each other, yeah. We should just watch closely. If anything needs doing, I'm sure Israel will do it. They're better at this. The only other thing worth doing is making friends with Kurdish factions.

On the bright side, I think Syria will be to the Iranian Khomeinist regime what Afghanistan was to the Soviet regime. Hezbollah has already lost hundreds.

yes OCCAM, kristians, the suedo marxists that would force the lessors to comply to "kristian" values, can't be done without Hitlering them. And the mid east kristians we so often feel sorry for often ain't no better than there muzzie oppressors. God I wish some in here would educate themselves before posting their nonsense!!!!

Oh, do shut up! Why don't you educate yourself about the eradication of historic populations in the Middle East before you scrawl YOUR nonsense?

You and Dick Slater should go bowling.

We'd be nuts to get directly involved in Syria unless the survival of Israel became threatened. Otherwise, it's a situatio to be watched from a distance, in any case the Israelis seem perfectly capable of stopping the transfer of arms to Hezbollah, and beyond that, I don't even believe that the people who replace Assad will be any better than him, but I do believe they could be worse.

There may be some well-meaning people involved in this coalition but what if any chance is there for any of them to be involved in the eventual government? They are more likely to be shut out, or eliminated early on.

Also, John McCain thinks it to be a good idea, which is pretty much the nail in the coffin.
