To the 30 hour work week;
“Operators can’t be as casual about workers’ total hours as they could before because there are fines and penalties and costs associated with [Obamacare],” said Scott DeFife, executive vice president for policy and government affairs for the National Restaurant Association. “You can’t accidentally let them become full time without a specific purpose.”

“There are multiple reasons for an increased reliance on part-timers, primarily continuing low demand and uncertainty about the economy. ”
Heh.Hey guys/gals. Just wait until Great Leader Obumble’s “healh care” kicks in.Any company in the USSA under 100 employees,i.e.,the small businesses that drive the economy,their positions will all become part-time positions.They gotta make a profit,and paying for Great Leader’s ego may be the final nail in the USofA’s coffin.
Having ran a business I used workers who worked less than a 40 hour week all the time;
– service sector use a lot of students and workers who for whatever reason cannot commit to greater hours.
– in the case of students I would actually restrict their hours fearing their studies would suffer.
– availability of workers at the particular time when needed don’t always jive.
– using part time workers give managers more flexibility to draw up schedules which are fair to the greatest number of workers.
I highly doubt any of my past employees would claim we exploited them. The reality is more often workers exploit their employers whether consciously or unconsciously.
Not enough work to stay ahead of the bills – tell-tale symptom of stagflation – too much money-printing, too much public debt and too little real productivity – Keynesian socialism’s perfect storm.
First comment to that article mentions ‘corporate greed’ immediately.
Idiot narrow-minded Liberals can read apparently, but to have so little understanding of what the words mean is astounding.
‘Progressives’ are so dumb it is frightening, grown-ups in Asia and the middle-east will walk all over these morons, which would be fine if they didn’t occupy all the positions of power in the civilized world.
In my case I work seasonal, and live in Canada that’s all there is, no full time any where.
To qualify for unemployment I would need to work full time to get enough hours. So I get nothing but have to pay into it (I would be better off on welfare, then working).The last factory just closed in my area so there are now none. Even Kmart that closed is now wall mart same employees less hours and benefits. The profits no longer stay here, as its an American Company. What I see going on is a De-industrialization. Factory’s closing jobs off shored and the stats even bear that out.The whole down town is up for sale if anyone is interested in buying one.Yet I’m told that Harper plans on bringing in 1000s of seasonal workers (temp workers) to do the jobs because of a shortage of workers.This nonsense like “I highly doubt any of my past employees would claim we exploited them.” comes from the same mind set Walmart uses. We hire students give them flexible hours, yet students are a minority there, or they blame the victim, you should of got a better education. As the factories relocate so do the high tech jobs, they go hand in hand, something they conveniently leave out in that argument.Government no longer works for us, they are part of the corporate/globalist machine designed to keep you down.Until we all decide to stop voting nothing changes.
How’s that reduced work week working out in Europe?
Attention attention Mickey Kaus is an economic illiterate. Anybody who is at all credulous of the DEY TRK R JRBS model of labor economics just doesn’t understand how capitalism works.
It’s not working out very well in B.C. Even with those coveted government jobs, CASUAL and ON CALL appear to be the status quo.
Remember how in the 1960s, TV promised that we would only be working 10 – 20 hours per week because of advances in productivity. Well the productivity advances came and we are working harder than ever and probably less well off. What the F happened?
Obamba’s 11 million Illegal Immigrants number is a joke, it’s more like +20 million.
I wonder if he counts his poverty stricken Aunt Zeituni Onyango and “Uncle Omar” (Onyango Obama) squatting in the US as well?
Sort of a conflict of interest to most not wanting to live in a banana republic, no?

Shaw, what happened? Activist unions. That’s what happened to productivity. Something horribly wrong when the eastern Canadian auto workers union all but demands a weak dollar (and weak nation) just so the cars built by their lazy asses get sold to US markets. On and btw, they’ll be striking for more days off/higher benefits/more pay whenever they want.
Remember the libranos and our 72cent buck?
