An aboriginal association tasked with disbursing federal funds for flood evacuees has spent over $1 million in eight months on snacks for evacuees, CBC news has learned.
The Manitoba Association of Native Fire Fighters (MANFF) spent the money, which was over and above the three meals a day Manitoba evacuees from the 2011 flood received from the hotels they were staying in.
Ted Ducharme, a MANFF community liaison who is currently on stress leave, has provided documents to CBC News that show the organization paid Winnipeg’s Mona Lisa Ristorante Italiano more than $1 million to provide “light refreshment” in the evenings to hotel-bound evacuees.
A copy of a ledger Ducharme provided to CBC News shows the restaurant delivered up to $1,500 worth of snacks every day to each hotel housing evacuees from April 2012 to December 2012.

OTTAWA — A Gimli hotel that has housed First Nations flood evacuees for nearly two years may have to go to court to recoup $1.7 million in outstanding bills from the Manitoba Association of Native Fire Fighters.
Retha Dykes, general manager of Misty Lake Lodge, said the hotel hasn’t received payments for housing about 65 evacuees, including feeding them, since September 2012.
Another $599,000 is outstanding for about 30 evacuees living at the Ashern Motor Hotel. The outstanding amounts for Ashern date back to June, Dykes said.

If you had bothered to read the CBC ledger of financial statement which you could easily draw up at CBC on Kate’s story you would find that these were being delivered to 3 different hotels. So it was approx. $1500 (this varied a little from day to day it even got as high as $2100 on some days) . Roughly multiply your figure by 3.
For example on June 11/12 Canada Thrift Lodge $2176.78
Victoria Inn $1424.21
Marlborough $1497.14
Benn to Mona Lisa Ristorante. Can’t ask for a finer place, great people and great food.
That being said, it’s not exactly the place I’d suggest for evening “snacks”.
Menu I recall was one of those with “Green Salad $12” etc.

How come the restaurant is not discounting the food costs? I was in the business for a while. If a regular order of that size was coming in,a discount would be negotiated,either over or under the table,depending on who was paying the tab. BTW,the owner of the restaurant held a fundraiser for the “human rights museum”.

If you look at the bills on the CBC site for every bill to each hotel every nite in spite of bill being $1400 – $2100 there was a $2.50 delivery charge. Every nite there is also a charge of $1.15 per person for disposables(napkins, plastic utensils)
