Big entrance by a new US Senator.

May he cross the Tea, as it were. OK mixed metaphore. Wot I ment 2 say woz: may the Tea be with him, and the steam alwayz a-boiling.

Wikipedia can be good for some things, e.g., List of Unusual Deaths.

A sampling of the oddities therein:

• 1993: Garry Hoy, a 38-year-old lawyer in Toronto, fell to his death on July 9, 1993, after he threw himself against a window on the 24th floor of the Toronto-Dominion Centre in an attempt to prove to a group of visitors that the glass was unbreakable. The glass did not break, but popped out of the window frame.

• 2007: Surinder Singh Bajwa, the Deputy Mayor of Delhi, India, died after falling from his building's terrace while trying to fight off attacking Rhesus Macaque monkeys.

A damn good read. The changes to the Indian Act in bill c-45 were actually initiated by current and former Indian chiefs of successful bands. A few snippets:

Mr. Clarence T. Jules (Chief Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer, First Nations Tax Commission, former chief of Kamloops Indian band):

"The proposed amendments to streamline the designation process are a step in the right direction. At the very least, the designation voting requirements should be the same as in other governments in Canada, where the majority support is sufficient. Accordingly, I support the amendments to the Indian Act as contained in Bill C-45."

Chief Sharon Stinson Henry (Member, National Aboriginal Economic Development Board, Chief of Rama First Nation)

"In conclusion, the national board is supportive of the overall direction taken in Bill C-45, to this extent: first, we agree to the proposed amendment to Bill C-45 to reduce the voting threshold to a simple majority, as has been mentioned. However, the board is of the opinion that the bill should go further and eliminate the need for a second designation vote when changes to the lease or the use of the land are required."

(not far enough! Imagine that?)

Ms. Leona Irons (Executive Director, National Aboriginal Lands Managers Association)

"In conclusion, as stewards of the land we have the foremost responsibility of ensuring quality land management to promote sustainable growth and prosperity within our communities. We also have the responsibility to provide technical advice and guidance to support improvement on matters related to first nations land management. Therefore, the National Aboriginal Lands Managers Association recognizes that the proposed amendments to the act outlined in division 8, clauses 206 to 209 of Bill C-45 have the potential to improve the designation process."

Is it just me, or did inspiring stories like this usually use to come out of the U.K.?

A Champaign, Illinois man drowned Jan. 1 in a mall pond as increasingly angry observers demanded a rescue, at least 13 minutes after the local fire department arrived at the scene.... "Myself and one other man got so angry watching the fire dept rescue teams ‘playing on the bank’ that we offered to be tied off and go in ourselves, and we certainly were threatened with arrest!" claimed (a) user, named perryupopcorn.

If you don't already, you should bookmark Matt Ridley [The Rational Optimist] and read everything he writes.
Here he is on Europe's coming decline.

Ah yes, BM. Ain't creeping socialism wonderful? And not the first time this has happened. Something about unions??

Whatever it is, Justthinkin, I don't think it's a good sign.

I'm sorry if this has been linked already, it's a few days old:

America Doesn’t Have a Gun Problem, It Has a Gang Problem" by Daniel Greenfield (aka Sultan Knish)

"St. Louis has a murder rate just a little lower than Belize. Baltimore has a worse murder rate than South Africa and Detroit has a worse murder rate than Colombia.... America’s horrific murder rate is a result of the transformation of major American cities into Sierra Leone, Somalia, Rwanda and El Salvador. Our murder rate now largely consists of criminals killing criminals."

http://frontpagemag.com/2012/dgreenfield/america-doesnt-have-a-gun-problem-it-has-a-gang-problem/

As if any of these "victims" would abide by any gun laws.

"It is largely the work of adult males from age 18 to 39 with criminal records killing other males of that same age and criminal past."

I think this is great news and the best thing to do is leave it alone. Hell....supply them with free ammo.

Never liked anyone approved by Obama but I'm starting to like Chuck Hagel.

Just an interesting read we all get tired once in awhile http://abearsrant.com/

One wonders when Glen McGregor is going to announce he's running for the NDP or Liberal Party. Ezra Levant thoroughly schools him here.

LoL ;)

Canuckleheads.

Makes me smile, every time,

For a fish, yes (but no). Better to shoot a deer, or a cow.

IMHO, idiots.

peterj- no, they should deport them.

Having just returned, chilled, from a bleak windy sunless day at the cabin in the Halliburton Highlands, I found no comfort in this ice fishing video, but I did find this A380 landing "by wire" at San Francisco AP
both soothing - almost hypnotic - and comforting:

BRITISH DOCTORS CALLING FOR KNIFE BAN
"British doctors are calling for a ban on kitchen knives to prevent stabbing incidents. A West Middlesex University Hospital group contends that violent crime is increasing in Great Britain and kitchen knives are used in approximately half of all stabbings. The team claims that many of the knife attacks are impulsive acts and that a kitchen knife is too convenient of a weapon. http://www.inquisitr.com/460671/british-doctors-calling-for-knife-ban-to-prevent-impulsive-stabbings/#QXoB3CvK8r2UpSvY.99 "

Eagle Lake east of Strathmore, 12 inches of ice.
Tried a mouse family holed up in a grain bin and cherry jujubes. Nether worth a darn. Went back for more Rye then decided to call it a day.

The ice is still unsafe in lots of places on Lk. Simcoe, but.....
I walked out and stayed close to shore while iceing 19 perch from around the Port Bolster area on New Years Day.
Three over 12 inches.
We found 3 inches of ice and a hot bite in the afternoon in the second place we tried.

SDA ice fishing meet and greet would rock!

Mrs. White, in the kitchen, with the knife? No bingo there. All objects can't be quarantined in anticipation of somebody's impulsive meltdown. There is a myriad of other possibilities. Example - Professor Plum in the study with the lead pipe. Whatever suits any person at any given time will be the modus operandi for murder. As for the self-inflicted variety, involving sheer stupidity and often combined with chemicals, the ultimate depravity of mankind can be viewed on "1000 Ways To Die".

"China: cold hits 28-yr low, 1000 ships trapped in ice"

January 5, 2013 is known as “slight cold”, according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar and the term signifies the beginning of the coldest period of winter.

In reality, the coldest period in China, at least for the last nearly three decades, had already begun on November
20.

the state media quoting the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) said on Saturday.

The weather has been cold enough to freeze sea water off China’s eastern coast, trapping more than 1000 ships in ice."

Predictions:

First, Hillary will not testify about Benghazi. The reason given will be that she is 'too fragile'. And thus,

Second, Obama will ignore Benghazi and his sworn word to 'get the bad guys'. As with anything that Obama chooses to ignore, Benghazi will fade as if it had never occurred. Just like the Fast and Furious gun running scandal...and Eric Holder is still in power..

Third, Obama will use his usual tactic of extreme emotional manipulation to raise the debt ceiling. All those impoverished, those senios, oh, and he'll threaten catastrophe if it's not passed. Just as he did with the Stimulus and all those shovel-ready projects, which he later laughed about because, ah, there weren't any.

If Congress balks, heh, Obama will do it by Executive Fiat, thus further sidelining and destroying Congress and the American people.
