Carolyn Bennett is supposed to be looking out for Canadian taxpayers as well as looking out for the best interests of the First Nations people of Canada. By taking the stance that she has, she has FAILED BOTH constituencies! And it doesn't seem to bother her at all.

1. 80% of the transactions tested failed to have proper documentation.

Dr Bennett either didn't read the Deloitte report or was inhaling some intoxicants of the 'funny cigarette' kind. In short, Dr. Bennett would dismiss Deloitte for gross failure in accountancy; notwithstanding that she has no expertise in this area.

What galls me the most, both about Carolyn Bennett and the CBC, is that it would have been perfectly fair game to criticize the Conservatives for not paying more attention to the financial mismanagement of Chief T. Spend [sic]. After all, the Tories are the ones in power and thus ultimately responsible for how public money is spent.
The fact that BOTH of them DELIBERATELY FAILED to do this, when it's absolutely their duty to criticize and/or report on such things, speaks VOLUMES about how political ideology supersedes honour & responsibility amongst the Left.
I watched her in that piece and couldn't believe what I was hearing. It is now clear that to be a Liberal you must be certifiably insane.
This isn't surprising for a Lieberal as the band was just practicing Lieberal style accounting practices. You know, the same type of accounting that led to Adscam and the worlds most expensive database program (AKA the firearms registry). It's considered bad form to document, in writing, whom envelopes of cash went to as long as the appropriate people in the party know who's been rewarded. I guess the one saving grace of her being a politician is that she can't be committing acts of malpractice as a physician (assuming her current understanding of medicine is equivalent to her demonstrated inability to understand simple financial facts). Any physician who doesn't understand the auditors report demonstrating that there's a major financial problem on the reserve either is incompetent or engages in the same financial irregularities themselves.

Robert, I'm equally amazed at how badly the Liberals have played this situation. For your scenario to work, however, I think they'd have needed to put forward a narrative about how the changes they had proposed while in office would have prevented this sort of "mismanagement" from occurring in the first place, ending with a claim that Stephen Harper has set the process back by years. I just don't think they'd have had much credibility with a non-contextualized attack on Harper over dollars (they'd be open to charges of hypocrisy, certainly, given the apparent past cozy relationship between certain bands and the Liberal Party).
As proof of their position, they could have argued something like, "Why did Harper wait seven years to bring in accountability requirements, if he was serious about reform? Our policies would have enforced that accountability, in the same way we eliminated the deficit and reduced the national debt."
Their current problem began last year, with Bob Rae, of course, trotting out (with angry red face and mad gesticulations, of course), his perennial path-of-least-resistence victimology routine, which seemed okay for a while then, when Canadians were truly aghast at conditions in Attawapiskat and, to a lesser degree, the seeming insensitivity of Harper's initial angry response. But now, they're still on the same routine, and have managed, with their multi-player diletante show, to:
- position Stephen Harper as a responsible moderate on the subject (which he is anyway, IMO, but it would have been harder for him to demonstrate that he isn't just "picking on the defenseless"),
- knocked their leadership race off the front pages and off-message at a fairly critical time (Paul Martin's intervention was particularly pathetic, and Dr. Bennett's is equally bad, but for the life of me I just don't understand what Justin Trudeau thought he was doing by showing up anywhere near Ms. Spence), and
- dealt a crushing blow to the obviously-insincere narrative that the Liberal Party was moving to the right.
Dr. Bennett would know, "First, do no harm." On this one, staying away would have been a far better play. They own it now, even more so than the NDP does, IMO. And now they've left themselves open, as you suggest, to questions about why they didn't (maybe they have a "hidden agenda"?).

Seems that Teresa Spence has been getting her hints on how to run a reserve from the N. Korean dictator. After all, if he scores 20 holes in one on an 18 hole golf course, then how much simpler to just put on weight on a hunger strike and get rid of the media when they start asking unwelcome questions. Only problem, is that all those people who'd never watch Sun News are suddenly asking themselves WTF does one have to do to get oneself kicked off an Indian reserve and might have a second look at those auditors reports which they've heard were just right wing propaganda.
I'm sure that all of the other Indian chiefs are really glad to have her in their midst and I'm curious if she might choke on a fish bone in her soup or meet with some other unusual accident before anyone gets to ask her some serious questions.
