John Gormley interviews Dr. Helen Caldicott...
"Okay, so let’s look at it very clearly. Mining uranium will lead to proliferation of nuclear weapons and possible nuclear war. Mining uranium will lead to epidemics of cancer, leukaemia and genetic disease for the rest of time.
I’m sure, you know, when Hitler produced the gas ovens, he said this is good for employment. Mining uranium could induce the global gas oven and the end of all life on earth. That’s immoral. There are many other ways to employ those people if they need employment by getting into renewable energy, all sorts of things, or maybe they could be supported by the government because we have exploited these people and their lands and we’ve done the same in Australia.
So you don’t do immoral things to produce employment for very, very poor people who need help."
She's doubly effective when defending her scientific credentials.

Right, you do moral things, like redistribute your quarter of a million dollar elitist salary to the very, very poor people who need help.
Waiting.....
What, you actually drive a car instead of walk?
Activist. Says all you need to know. She's up the eco-cultists arses so far,she will never see daylight again.
Soooo Dr. Caldicott, apart from Chernobyl which was a man made disaster, what nuclear disasters have occurred? Waiting? Waiting? Waiting? That's right, NONE. So what's the problem? Again, NONE! I rest my case.
There is nothing immoral in creating employment, in fact, the opposite is true. True in the early days of uranium mining, safeguards were few and far between. But we've come a long way baby. WRT green employment, please give me at least two examples of where alternative energy has been able to exist without any govt. assistance. Waiting, waiting, waiting.
There are so many things wrong with that argument...
Mind offline, breakers tripped, reboot in....
She is an ignorant idiot. Probably knows nothing about the people who live in conditions so radioactive that, if one brought a sample of the monazite sands of India or soil from some parts of Iran to Canada, it would be considered as dangerous nuclear waste. Someone the people who live in these areas do just fine.
Sense of logical fallacy reloading, please wait....
The interview could be titled "Gormley Interviews The Gormless."
The genie is out of the bottle, dear Doctor.
The question is how to put him (or her) to good use.
She doesn't lie, but evidently anyone who disagrees with her does.
"They lie, they lie!"
Very convenient
She's a self-important twit, and so, likely, is Gormley for giving her airtime. Everything is dangerous and causes cancer, let's just all end it here and now!
Godwin's Law.
She loses.
Perhaps she can dispute some facts , but then again I forget that the likes of Gore , Suzuki , Rachel Carson etc. view facts as heresy.

Almost worthy of coining a new word for stupid. Why she's absolutely ... caldicott!
I didn't realize Caldicott was still around. IIRC, she was one of the leaders of the unilateral nuclear disarmament movement from 30 years ago. Nuclear winter, arms race, cruise missiles, etc. We know how that turned out.
I used to think people like Ms.Haldicott were nut-bars. Not any longer. Nuclear technology as we know it today is so inherently dangerous that we should abolish it. For example, don't let anyone fool you that all is well in Japan. Mainstream media may not be reporting the matter but the situation there remains very dangerous and not just for Japan. However, there are alternatives. There's growing interest in using thorium as a nuclear fuel.It is safer by far and can't be used for nuclear weapons production. Check out the following links:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thorium

There's a lot more information out there. Check it
out. Talk to government leaders. There's no reason Canada can't become a leader in Thorium nuclear power.
Sorry, that should be Caldicott.
She was wrong 25 years ago, now she is just as wrong, and looks like she was hit by a bag of spanners, as they say in the UK!

Are you for real?
I got more Rotogens getting my recently broken collarbone x-rayed 3 times over what happened at Fukishima.
Get a clue.
Resorting to the all too common "Hitler equivalency" fallacy to make a non sequitur argument tells you all you need to know about this anti-capitalist culture warrior disguised as a professional. Obviously the good doctor missed the professional ethics portion of her degree course.
"... There's no reason Canada can't become a leader in Thorium nuclear power. ..."
Yes there are several reasons ... Canada has little or no interest (it has uranium but not much thorium 2% of world reserves) and China does and perhaps India also.
Thorium Estimates

Thorium overstated

The US chose uranium because it needed a nuclear weapon to end WW2 with Japan , and once Russia , then China gained nuclear weapons , the die was cast and uranium fueled reactors are the norm.
"So you don’t do immoral things to produce employment for very, very poor people who need help."
- and another leftist zinger! As a typical cultural Marxist zombie, her value system is as convoluted as her dogma. What makes her think these people are "poor"? Perhaps they don't have Manhattan condos but are they happy?, content? Perhaps their value systems are different than the typical grasping urban commie. Perhaps they gauge "wealth" by the amount of freedom they have in their lives.
I know the concept of freedom/liberty as a public wealth value is beyond on most of these control freak leftists but I, and many like me, have relegated materialism to a minor priority where personal freedom is concerned. It is entirely probable that people of poor means can still be happy and even content with minimal "wealth" as long as they have health, freedom and the basic necessities. They may work hard but they work for their own benefit and keep the rewards of their efforts. - Totally foreign ideals to today's urban-centric materialist class struggle warrior.
I would cite the many people I know who left good paying careers and urban values to live free on their own resources in rural/wild areas - they did so to get more cntrol over their lives and live independtly. The native Canadians I know ALL value their independence and freedom above material wealth and most live off reserves but still in “the sticks”. Perhaps this culture warrior should take the time to actually know some of those she wages a materialistic class war for, instead of regurgitating the entitlement BS she hears from single issue "professional indians" who are always whailing for a larger chunk of the welfare pie .
The supplies of natural gas are so great, especially so with fracking, is so cheap nuclear power can't compete.
A natural gas power plant can be built in 2 years unlike a 10 years for a nuclear power plant.
The Cold War is over, but the war against cold continues.
Dr. Caldicott has a concern a nuclear weapon proliferation. So, does she support taking military measures by Israel and the U.S. to stop the Islamist Ayatollah jihadi regime in Iran from going nuclear?
CANDU reactors cam burn Thorium in a pinch, but it is more cost effective to run Natural gas at this point.
CO2 is no longer a factor. Global Warming is debunked 6 ways from Friday.
Or whatever Leftist Buzzword it is knowadays.
Busted.

Hey Ras Erasmus. How many people have died or even gotten sick as a result of radiation from Fukushima Daiichi? Answer: None. How many people are expected to get sick? Answer: None. Do we need to worry about western nuclear reactors? Answer: No.
Those are facts that can easily be found online in seconds. Take your tin-foil hat off for a few minutes and let some sense seep in to your thick skull.
I say old dear, when even the "Moonbat" notices your argument is a few bricks short of a load, you have serious issues!

Canada: Slowly killing the world one barrel of bitumen and yellowcake at a time.
No energy source should be eliminated due to irrational fears. Energy should be evaluated on its affordability and reliability. Encouraging energy abundance and accessibility is the most moral thing you can do since energy is essential to societal development. Nuclear power, like every other source of power, has pros and cons and is best evaluated by comparing it to other viable alternatives. In some places is make sense and others it doesn't. Here in Sask we have enough natgas, coal and hydro that we probably do not need nuclear at this time.
Listening to radicals like Calidoctt is like being forced to listen to fingernails on a chalkboard. I enjoyed how callers challenged her ridiculous claims.
The warmist meltdown is making these people go insane, which in turn is furthering warmist meltdown. A virtuous positive feedback cycle.

Thorium is a red herring. There are no high-grade deposits of thorium minerals that I'm aware of. Thorium most often occurs as a constituent of the mineral monazite, which is a minor accessory mineral to some granitic rocks. We might be able to recover some monazite from the waste sand at oilsands mines near Ft. Mac, but it would be costly to do so, and here in Canada we are blessed with high-grade uranium deposits in the Athabaska sandstone. For Canada to adopt thorium, it would be like hunting mice for their meat, and ignoring the buffalo standing around.
There have quite a few thorium true believers posting on WUWT, and it has been mentioned there, with cites, that India did in fact manage to explode a nuclear bomb using fissile material derived from a thorium reactor, so the non-proliferation claim is meaningless.
Any source of energy sufficiently concentrated to be useful can be dangerous, if the energy is not released in a controlled fashion. Witness the recent event where about a dozen Fisker Karma hybrids caught fire and exploded on a New Jersey dock when flooded by the storm surge of Sandy. Witness the hundreds of people who have been killed over the years when hydroelectric dams have failed.
All we have to do is to make an honest risk-benefit analysis, and adopt safety measures that reduce risk to an acceptable level, without wholly negating the benefits of technology. After all, people get killed in cars, get killed every day, but that doesn't stop any of us from getting in our car and driving it somewhere, does it?
More people have died in Ted Kenndy's car than US nuclear power generation.
Years ago, many years ago, a study (done by real physicists)
showed that a typical coal-fired electricity plant resulted in more radioactivity in the environment than a
nuclear power plant of equal wattage. The study was published in a Festschrift for Niels Bohr.
Caldicott is a crank.
Commentators, as usual, show supreme confidence based on pretty much zero knowledge. No one wants to look a little deeper into anything. Whatever industry says must be the truth. After all, industry is filled with love for the human race and cares only for the well-being of all.
loki
Yeah there are a lotta folk who have never heard of these naturally occuring radioactive places....or know that uranium is the most common element on earth....more than iron, nickel, silicon etc.....because it falls from the sky in a constant rain like carbon 14.
"There are many other ways to employ those people if they need employment by getting into renewable energy"
Great idea, they can work for Solyndra!
LOL Wut? Godwin's law? really?
Approximately 16 of the $100,000+ Fisker Karma extended-range luxury hybrids were parked in Port Newark, New Jersey last night when water from Hurricane Sandy’s storm surge apparently breached the port and submerged the vehicles.
As Jalopnik has exclusively learned, the cars then caught fire and burned to the ground.

I was lucky enough to catch this interview. I was impressed with Gorm, he treated her with more respect then she deserved. What she said can be summed up by these points:
"I don't lie but everyone who disagrees with me is..."
"I can say whatever I want and talk over you but if you do that to me then you're being mean and my feelings are hurt...."
"I may be only a medical doctor but that doesn't mean I'm not an expert in any field I want to be and no matter what you know I know more...."
"I'm right and you're always wrong...."
She is so typical of those on the left, blind & deaf to anything outside their narrow view of the world.
"when Hitler produced the gas ovens, he said this is good for employment"
Hitler also hated black people and Jews every bit as much as Liberal Progressives do today.
Auswizch = Planned Parenthood
He also enslaved and imprisoned those that weren’t murdered outright, every bit as much as the Liberal progressives do with the Negro entitlement welfare and ghetto systems. Those few that eventually escape Liberal ghetto’s are demeaned and shackled with Affirmative Action Plans that make them unemployable and marginalized in society.
Racist Liberal prisons without bars, Hitler would honor today’s Liberal left with medals.
"Commentators, as usual, show supreme confidence based on pretty much zero knowledge. No one wants to look a little deeper into anything. Whatever industry says must be the truth. After all, industry is filled with love for the human race and cares only for the well-being of all."
F***, I'm devastated!
Actually there is more thorium than uranium in the earths crust. The problem is that the thorium is widely scattered and mixed in with everything else. Dig up all the soil down to the bedrock in your backyard and process it and you will have a few micrograms of thorium but no uranium. It would be very uneconomical to have to process a few million tons of rocks and dirt to end with a pound of thorium.
In contrast uranium, much like copper, iron and other metals is concentrated in ore deposits that are easily mined, transported and refined. You only have to process a few hundred tons of ore to obtain a pound of uranium which is orders of magnitude more efficient and less expensive than thorium.
Canada mines 20% of the world's uranium of which 80% is exported. With such a plentiful supply there is no reason to switch to thorium. It will take decades if not centuries before uranium is so scarce that thorium reactors make economic sense.
gordinkneehill is absolutely correct: Every form of concentrated energy from a candle to fissionable materials is potentially hazardous. We just have to be smart enough to control it properly.
If a MD is certification of infallability, why do we elect so many lawyers?
"The warmist meltdown is making these people go insane, which in turn is furthering warmist meltdown. A virtuous positive feedback cycle."
S'truth! Just remember though, correlation is not necessarily causation. They might simply be nuts.

Ras - Try not to be such a caldicott.
A large majority of our population has no idea regarding radiation, specifically, the naturally occurring background radiation we are surrounded with daily.
Whether it is Potassium in bananas, carbon-14, well-known for carbon dating items thousands of years old,or as said previous, thorium, we seem to survive quite well.
I had this conversation with one of my work associates several months ago, as he was in a conspiracy theory rant about Fukushima, and how the government wasn't being honest, yadda, yadda, yadda, when I told him about the naturally occurring background radiation that was all around us. He thought I was talking about fallout from previous atomic tests. Looked at me like a ghost.
Science is hard, harder than maths!
This is not to say that Japan doesn't have a problem, they do, much like the area around Chernobyl, the areas immediately surrounding are not safe for agriculture, or habitation for some time. But let's have an adult conversation, unlike the left, which wants to be the Chicken Little's of the world for almost every modern technology.
