On the eve of tomorrow's big election in the United States of America, we get to enjoy an educational cartoon about the Electoral College. And then delight in this beautiful rendition of America the Beautiful, performed by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir.
Your inspiring and insightful reader tips are most welcome in the comments.

Heard the Mormon Tabernacle Choir live in Salt Lake City many years ago in the main church (temple?). Very impressive indeed.
Below is a snippet from Jerry Pournelle's blog today. To our US friends, be sure tomorrow to cast your vote for the candidate who believes in America.
"Iran will by now have tens of kilograms of fuel grade Uranium. Fuel grade is 10% to 20% U235. Creating it is about 80% of the work required to create weapons grade Uranium, which is about 90% U235. Building a Hiroshima weapon from 90% U235 metallic Uranium is a fairly simple process: the Manhattan Project didn’t even bother to test a Uranium weapon. The Trinity test was a Plutonium bomb. Refining Uranium from Fuel Grade to Weapons Grade is an order of magnitude less difficult (and time consuming) than refining natural Uranium to Fuel Grade. The point is that Iran has done 80 to 90% of the work required to create a Hiroshima nuke, and this is known to everyone who takes the trouble to look at the situation. It is possible that Vice President Biden did not know this during the Vice-Presidential Debate, but he certainly knows it now. There is no difficulty at all in building a Hiroshima bomb from Weapons Grade Uranium. The resulting weapon can be carried in a Six By truck, a small power boat, or most aircraft. There is no need for a missile.
All this is widely known."
Re: Electoral College. Much too complicated for no obvious reason.
Re: America the Beautiful. Often referred to as "the other anthem," its the only national hymn that I`m aware of that mentions wheat. If you`re from the plains, that`s important. Nothing is as exhileratiing as the dark amber waves of golden wheat on warm August afternoons. Add the rustling of the ripened plants, (especially the bearded varieties,) and you have a scene straight out of a John Steinbeck novel.

TJ, unless you are a Mormon yourself and have received a recommend, you would not have been allowed into a Mormon temple. It was probably the Tabernacle, the building adjacent to the SLC temple where you heard the choir perform.
albertaclipper thanks for the clarification. I knew I wouldn't get it right. I was in Salt Lake for a conference and the concert was one of the highlights of the trip.
If the Mormons have your vital records, b/m/d, you (or a paper representative) have been in a temple.
Mormons take their genealogy seriously and have thousands of records on microfilm.
"Re: Electoral College. Much too complicated for no obvious reason."
It's neither all that complicated, nor without reason. I suggest you read Federalist Paper 68, "The Mode of Electing the President", written by Alexander Hamilton, who was a delegate to the Constitutional Convention and, as such, participated in the deliberations and the writing of the Constitution.
Like all the Constitution, it is a compromise. In this case, it was suggested by Ben Franklin to break a deadlock and was designed to prevent a "tyranny of the minority" of the most populous states, while not disregarding the political legitimacy of the majority of Citizens in those states.
Each state gets a fixed number of Electoral College electors equal to the total number of the state's Senators and Representatives. In this way, the the political legitimacy of the majority of Citizens in those states is recognized but the power is somewhat diluted by the standard fixed number of Senators, two, that each state has. Also by this method, the small states are not powerless pawns in national elections.
That way, the US has avoided such a situation as prevailed in Canada for so long, wherein two provinces, Ontario and Quebec, basically controlled national Parliamentary elections, with the other provinces politically secondary. In post-Revolutionary times, that would have meant that Massachusetts and Virginia would otherwise have been in the same control position as Ontario and Quebec. Today, that would be California, Texas, Florida and New York having this controlling power, with the other 46 states secondary. That is also the purpose of the decennial US census, which, among other things, adjust the numbers of Representatives each state has, keeping the House of Representatives seats about equal in constituent numbers and fair to each state.
So, if a person takes a bit of time to read and study the nature and purpose of the Electoral College, he sees that it's neither overly complex, nor purposeless.
In case you were wondering how much Team Clinton hates Obama, here's Bill's latest helpfulness:

Unlike Obama, Bill is far from stupid. I agree with Treacher that he's doing this quite deliberately.
Iran Nukes --
What is widely known is that with the fall of the Soviet Union, a significant number of their tactical nukes went 'missing'. Any oil producing country that wants a nuclear weapon [or more] already has them including Iran.
The Iran - Nuke fiasco is a red herring and Pournelle should know better since he's usually spot-on.
It's nothing more than political posturing because Iran want's to be 'recognized' and 'acknowledged' as a nuclear power.
Thanks for the links, Black Mamba.
So, I find myself at last in agreement with Bill Clinton on something. We both hold Obama in utter contempt. As far as Hillary, she doesn't have Bill's intellect, so she just hates Obama, a rival who beat her from her rightful nomination in 2008.
Hillary's last shot for Pres will be in 2016, when she'll go for the nomination to run against incumbent Romney. That'll be interesting.
Early results from New Hampshire are coming in.

~north_of_60
Being 'recognized/acknowledged' as a nuclear power(if that is your goal) means demonstrating the capability, not merely posturing.
Everyone and their dog thinks Israel is a nuclear power, but Israel doesn't posture.
Iran is neither posturing nor is Iran a nuclear power.
When Iran gets one single nuclear weapon they will try to deliver it to Tel Aviv, sans posturing.
OK. But in the interest of the "fair & balanced" --

Oz- true, unfortunately. And any attempt on the part of Israel to invoke MAD would surely fail.
I would, however, like to see if the prospect of a pork-fat injection system (rather than tritium) in a fusion bomb casing, threatened to be detonated over Mecca "in the event that our nation is wiped from the face of the earth" would be. Lots of teeth gnashing, but would it be enough to propel the 7th century men forwards through an enlightenment?
Probably not. "You can't fix stupid."

Once again rubbing in their faces that the tech expertise they desire can only be bought or stolen.
So far, they have proven incapable of matching the west's tech progress, and I'm more inclined to credit Iran with the desire to show their peers that they can, even if it's just this area.
The capability to produce something, rather than be forced to buy or steal it, is a valuable political weapon.

"Sea Ice News Volume 3 #15 – Arctic sea ice doubles in October
Posted on November 6, 2012 by Anthony Watts
In Sea Ice News #14, we noted that the Arctic refreeze was the fastest ever. According to NSIDC, Arctic sea ice extent doubled in October.
Arctic rapidly gaining winter ice
Ice extent doubled in October. The rate of increase since the 2012 minimum was near record, resulting in an October monthly extent 230,000 square kilometers (88,800 square miles) greater than the previous low for the month, which occurred in 2007."

"A behemoth's final days"
"Helen Czerski charts a most intrepid and storied voyage of an Arctic iceberg"
"The battle has taken its toll. The iceberg only gets seven hours and 40 minutes of daylight now, and soon the darkness will swallow it up completely. Since the supply of energy from the sun is so weak, the siege is over for this year. A winter respite is beginning.
Sea ice is advancing towards the berg from the north. This is the other type of ice at the poles, formed when the sea surface itself freezes. It's fascinating stuff, because the salt is mostly squeezed out as it freezes, so sea ice is almost fresh. It starts as fragile platelets, and thickens as the water temperature drops. In an average year (out of the past 30 years), the sea ice would already have reached our iceberg. But this year, there was less summer sea ice in the Arctic than any other year on record, so it is taking longer for the great freeze to reach 69N. The sea ice is still crawling south, and when it touches the cliffs I saw, it will connect our iceberg to all the other ice in the Arctic. The iceberg will be frozen in place. Darkness and silence will rule. The bears will be able to walk out on to the sea ice and hunt again.
In the middle of one of my typical frantic workdays, I enjoy imagining where ''our'' iceberg is now."

Just turned on CNN and ,lo and behold, that Candy moderator that knows everything about Benghazi is saying that someone may be very surprised tonight.Time for beer.
My take on this ,is that the media pushing Obama have been very pessimistic about the race, always calling it too close to call. The others have been more optimistic calling it anywhere from a close race to a possible landslide victory.
Unfortunately, those with a 'truther' mentality are loading up on readily available ammunition to be used if Obama loses.
"CN Rail, CP Rail surging with crude oil moving by trains"
"Canadian National Railway Co. and Canadian Pacific Railway Ltd., the country’s No. 1 and 2 carriers, are rushing to build terminals to load oil beyond the reach of pipelines in some of North America’s remotest regions.
Canadian National is in talks to build more oil terminals after an agreement last month to construct a facility serving Manitoba and Saskatchewan, Chief Executive Officer Claude Mongeau said in an interview. “Rapid-deployment terminals” as little as a tenth of that size also are in the works, he said.
Cargo from Alberta’s oil sands is buoying Canadian National while Canadian Pacific benefits from tracks serving North Dakota’s Bakken Shale formation. Canadian Pacific opened a rail hub in the state this year and is investing $90-million to upgrade a Saskatchewan-to-Minnesota line.
“Crude by rail is becoming a reality,” said Walter Spracklin, a transportation analyst at RBC Capital Markets in Toronto. “Before, it was a theory.”"
