Painting The Target

So you're in a SEVEN hour firefight at night...

You wouldn't need to laser designate the target, if you only need to communicate to the other few land elements that came in from Tripoli.

Why wouldn't you use phosphor TRACER rounds to indicate to others on the ground where the mortar crew target is? Simple, efficient, and tells others where to aim their rifles.

For SEAL team trained individuals on the rooftop this would be elementary stuff...

No it is not.
Lasers don't work like that.

Liar, , and I know this stuff.

NOT FOOLING ANYBODY THAT WILL EVER COVER YOU ASS AGAIN.

Obama go away, you don't fool the operators, dick.

DALE

Right on Dale...

You laser designate the target when you have assets that can exploit the technology.

If you are going to 'call in the shot'; there are some assets loitering about to make good on the shot...otherwise why give your position away?

Hans you have to have air support over target.

They will not admit it, RIP Navy Seals.
Sorry, I wish tier parents know that they died brave.

You do not ever stop being a Navy Seal.

CIA can get bent as far as Obama.

All this goes under the heading of "a passing advantage". Such events generally last only months sometimes hours.

The first use of iron swords against bronze was such...an advantage that prevailed until the other guy got an iron sword.

Charles Martel's cavalry enjoyed such a passing advantage, at Tours, by deploying something learned from the Huns...stirrups.

The adoption by the Royal Navy of Battlecruisers, sacrificing armour for speed, more powerful than anything as fast and faster than anything as/more powerful, only worked until the German fleet built their own battlecruisers.

The night cruiser actions off Guandacanel, showed Japanese night fighting doctrine was effective....until the USN deployed radar.

German radar equiped night fighters became prey for passive detection equiped Mosquito nightfighters...when the hunters literally became the hunted.

Sonar/Asdic revolutionized anti-submarine warfare until somebody developed more discrete passive detection.

Arab adoption of Soviet aircraft and Soviet jammer pods was easily countered by IDF deployment of "home on jam" missiles with very effective, long range "lock on".

These night vision, IR vision and designators have been proliferated so much, that a new game of cat and mouse has emerged.

It's always been more a battle of wits than technology.

I suspect what you will see in future is lasers operating in burst mode, come on briefly, fire a coded string of pulses, and go dark. And by briefly, I mean fractional seconds. And the pulse code is relayed in real time by radio to the airborne asset, "fire on 111001100". Enemy watching with night vision gear will maybe see a brief flash, that doesn't persist long enough for them to train their weapons.

I have the real (not Mavel) Iron man Mk 1 stuck in my head.

Carbon fiber/Kevlar bonded to Titanium.

I prefer grey urban camo over the Marvel Crap....

An interesting discussion....

Blows the "Obama-Nation(tm)" cover story right out of the water.

Have a nice election...

War ultimately comes down to will and skill.

The Vietnam War settled that once and for all.

US control of the air owes more to training and the inculcation of
a fighting mindset than to their equipment.

Unfortunately the Islamofascists have plenty of will - a quotation that floats about from one of them, "The Americans have the
clocks, but we have the time."

In the article the writer says " or for the benefit of other guys up on a high floor, or maybe to help others maneuver into a position to kill the mortar crew."

Is that not clouding the issue a bit. There was no one else around helping him.

He may have been told that there was ,but apparently there was not.
Perhaps Obama knew that they were not going to last the night,so he had them reveal their position so he could get a decent sleep before the Vegas fundraiser.

Perhaps Obama knew that they were not going to last the night,so he had them reveal their position so he could get a decent sleep before the Vegas fundraiser.

And perhaps it was a desperation move to bluff the mortar crew into abandoning their position. Nobody will know what happened unless the people who were there come forward. The 20+ people who were escaped owe it to those guys who saved them.

KISS people. The Zero Hussein lied, people died.
