The Government of Ontario's newly created Ontario College of Trades is planning to hit hardworking tradespeople with membership fees that, if the College has its way, will add up to $84 million a year.

Why this blog?
Until this moment
I have been forced
to listen while media
and politicians alike
have told me
"what Canadians think".
In all that time they
never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio - "You don't speak for me."

Saskatchewan would be better off recruiting from the sizable and cheap labour pool in China, like we do in B.C.
Maybe India, too, once we get that free trade agreement in place.
Traveled through Southern Saskatcehwan on Highway #13 spending several days enjoying the people the landscape and the economic activity. Will becoming back for a longer stay "some day". Cheers;
I've worked with a quite a few tradesmen that have left Ontario over the past few decades, I haven't met any that have regretted it.
They're westernized now.
And leave "Canada" for "the west?"
Give your head a shake.
The savages in the west actually question the supremacy of government! The horror!
yeah well this regulation stuff is BS....
Health and safety comes around and demands "forklift 'licences'"....which in reality do not exist. There are certificates of training from such entities such as comunity colleges but these are NOT licences. These are not to be construed to resemble qualified drivers licences related to heavy trucks. What as farce.
Then demands are made for the forklifts to have annual certification, but no standards exist for those who issue the certification. This is not even similar to licenced auto mechanics or inspections.
Similar farce standards are for operating construction equipment.....but the only Department of Labour standards are for cranes and similar lifting devices.
IMHO these initiatives are to enhance revenue stream for the entities that provide the "training".
Ah the joy of liberal life. What can they be thinking? Oh wait, the liberal left don't think, they regulate and create a new bureaucracy. Did you see what barry wanted to do down south? Create a new cabinet post, Secretary of Business. The solution to everything, more red tape and bureaucrats.
Bring back Mike Harrris.
How to drive trades from your province: Course 101
Too true Sasquatch. Credentialism for the sake of it. Zoom boom tickets, man-lift tickets, CSTS...all bullshit. Had a site super tell me I wasn't qualified to operate a man-lift because I didn't have the ticket. I explained to him that as a conventional crane operator I swung 250' of stick without killing any guys on the top end, why would he think I couldn't handle 60' operated from the top end. Know nothing meddling idiots.
Dulton must need to raise a lot of money to fund his legal defense team.

THAT sums it up quite nicely, syncro.
If only there were some sort of conservative party not peopled with Statists and lifelong bureaucrats for which to vote.
Yes it does Dale...rent seeking, book smart, reality deficient busy bodies. GTF out of our way and the work gets done.
Petition: old Indian word for "people too afraid to blockade stone teepee in Toronto".
I have neighbor who has been a hairdresser for 30 years. She will now have to go back to school in order for her to continue plying her trade. Same thing with barbers.
Another boost for the underground economy. A lot of home basements are going to be converted into shops.
Dalton McGuinty's Ontario is a prime example of Nanny state/Daddy knows best gone wild. He's legislated us to death, there's a law or rule against most everything required to sustain life in the province. Places this badly managed usually see a massive exodus of those who are in a position to leave.
Sadly he's still doing his destruction, by proroguing the legislature he's full steam ahead with his agenda.
This is Friedrich Hayek's Road to Serfdom as it appeared the 1945 Reader's Digest. Just a fabulous read and he is so right in how he describes our present society some 67 years later.

Does this sound familiar to what Obama has done to encourage class warfare.
"Democracy and socialism have nothing in common but one word: equality. But notice the difference: while democracy seeks equality in liberty, socialism seeks equality in restraint and servitude.’
To weld together a closely coherent body of supporters, the leader must appeal to a common human weakness. It seems to be easier for people to agree on a negative programme – on the hatred of an enemy, on the envy of the better off – than on any positive task."
This sounds like the TEA party and why the leftists attack its members
"There is one aspect of the change in moral values brought about by the advance of collectivism which provides special food for thought. It is that the virtues which are held less and less in esteem in Britain and America are precisely those on which Anglo-Saxons justly prided themselves and in which they were generally recognized to excel. These virtues were independence and self-reliance, individual initiative and local responsibility, the successful reliance on voluntary activity, non-interference with one’s neighbour and tolerance of the different, and a healthy suspicion of power and authority."
Places this badly managed usually see a massive exodus of those who are in a position to leave.

Place as badly managed as Ontario should have grassroots revolts - instead, we have 'petitions'.
My trade license got me my job, but I don't actually need it for my job. I might just decide to let it lapse. I already have to pay the government every year to maintain my license. I have no idea what that money is supposed to be for.
I escaped Dalton McGuinty's smothering policies only to get Chrissy Clarke's,is there no relief?
H.Ryan said: "I escaped Dalton McGuinty's smothering policies only to get Chrissy Clarke's,is there no relief?"
I left the d@mn country and still couldn't get away from it. Obama's America, Dalton's Ontario, same-same. We are now at the point where there's no place left to run. There is no relief.
So now we get to defeat them and drive them out of public office or knuckle under.
Kate, are you certified to run this blog? Time to license you my dear. btw, that was sarcasm to those who do not recognize it.
The really sad thing is that the Ontario PC's wouldn't even try to roll Dalt's insanity back. Just keep chugging along.
Texas Canuck: Sarcasm your post may be, but we could be heading in that very direction.
Heh. I abandoned my mechanic's license (310a) when they screwed me over by splitting the trade into Automotive (310s) and Truck and Coach (310t), forcing me to pay for two licenses instead of one. I wound up working for over ten years with an expired ticket and never had a hassle.
They whine enough as it is about the lack of people entering the trades...wait until those working in trades sound off with a resounding F-U and not bother renewing.
I guess this means that Mike Holmes will be moving to Regina.
This is why fully fascist or socialist governments don't allow travel in Nation without permission. All citizens having internal passports. Your loss is our gain Ontario with stupid scams like this.
Hope it also applies to the CBC, lawyers and of course all politicians in Ontario!!!!
The McGuinty Liberals are about to kill off the second most lucrative agricultually oriented tax generating sector in the province by abandoning the Standardbred & Thoroughbred Horse Breeding, Racing and Yearling Sales industry from the non taxpayer Slots generated funding.
Bastards!!
Its mandatory for 22 trades right now.....fee $100.00 to $200.00....I will not pay it....just wait until they spool this garbage up....we will be just like Greece.... 300 or so mandatory trades.....like outhouse cleaner...nail painter.....pencil sharpener and so on....they allow comments on their site WWW.collegeoftrades.ca..../////
I'll just let everyone rest easy with what I was told when I called the college of trades months ago to ask them if they really had a clue at all and how much their new building to house all the bureaucracy is going to cost.
First - They are a arms reach from the government, and second at the time the fee hadn't been decided yet - last I read it was up 200 for employees and 600 for employers.
It's all political correct garbage and I have to agree with what fiddle said - When companies are in court because able bodied humans with a brain got caught using 6 foot stepladders without written instructions how to use them there is a problem, and I can't quote what the 78 year old semi retired safety inspector said about the state of safety rules it had some lovely f bombs and in his opinion it's become all about the revenue - I'll always love and respect the crusty old salts.
The college of trades was really created from the same sickness.
Syncro at 1:47 - isn't it inspiring noticing it's not just the few guys you'd never turn your back on more worried about covering their --s then making decisions and standing by them good or bad- now it's promoted as being the "smart" thing to do and expected to be embraced without a whimper.
phooey!!
While I agree with a great deal of the disdain expressed here re: credentialism and bureaucratic cash-grabbing etc, let's also be honest enough to recognize that the quality level of the average build today is frighteningly low.
Contractors are so desperate for workers that they're hiring people with no skills, no common sense, and no pride or craftmanship. Windows get installed backwards, exterior caulking gets applied at -5C, vapour barrier is put on the wrong side of walls. And nobody catches the mistakes, nor particularly cares. In 10 years [if that] Saskatchewan is going to face a tsunami of failed buildings; leaks, molds, rotting wallboard, exterior panels falling off etc.
"Contractors are so desperate for workers that they're hiring people with no skills, no common sense, and no pride..."

Jeez, I don't really think it's that bad!
I mean, the skill level, pride and integrity of the average home-builder simply has to be better than a McGuinty Cabinet Minister's, don't you think?
