Festering the problem, many reporters, thought leaders in the press, and news executives rarely encounter people in the heartland any more. The Mississippi River Valley is something to be flown over instead of studied and covered unless there is a natural disaster. Additionally, the new breed of political reporter knows little about politics before Bush v. Gore, couldn’t care less to have a sense of history to give them perspective, embraces the cosmopolitan culture of elite environs in New York and Washington diving only into hipster dive bars to drink Pabst Blue Ribbon to connect in some superficial way with the rest of the country, leans left socially and fiscally, and maintains an increasingly secular world view nearly identical to that of their other young, hipster reporter friends. “Professing themselves wise, they became fools . . . ”It is a painful truth.

I am always torn between the idea that the individual reporters are a bunch of 'liberal' skanks and the idea that the media corporations/owners are working tirelessly to advance the socialist cause.
I really doubt that Skippy the reporter would get many column inches or air time if (s)he were to report a story with a conservative slant working for a media baron who lives and breathes socialism.
Skippy may not be the brightest light in the string but I suspect that (s)he knows on which side the bread is buttered.
"The Mississippi River Valley is something to be flown over instead of studied and covered...."
Same thing in Canada.
Replace the words "Mississippi River Valley" with "rural Ontario, Saskatchewan and Alberta" and you have nailed the attitudes of our moral and intellectual superiors in Toronto, Montreal, and Ottawa.
Bulls eye, Kate.
That is an absolute,must-read piece.
It isn't that this so called intellectualism is restricted to 'reporter'. It has existed for 1000s of years. I think the significany aspect is that the size of this group is growing faster and faster.
Their grasp of history and the drivers that make a society work might simply scratch the surface but their combined opinions do impact the direction of policy. When I say this segment of society has always existed I am thinking of those people who do not materially contribute to society. They feed themselves by becoming in essence paratsites who consume a lot but provide no real benefit to a society. Harsh words indeed.
It used to be that a man was measured by what he produced and whether his word was his bond. That yardstick is valued less and less in today's world. It is used less because that segment of society I have been describing cannot measure up and thusly must destroy that yardstick.
Excellent article. This group of isolate living-in-a-bubble leftists are also the main component of academia. And Obama's White House gang.
His commentary is absolutely on the money.
In particular, EDUCATION.
That is where it all starts isnt it.??
Now, is it just me seeing this there is an inherent connection between the % rise of
female Teachers + feminism (and subsequent decline in male opposites), to the rise in the use of Ritalin..?? Along the same timeline, creation of public sector teachers unions..??
Both those aspects of North American education have steered the philosophy of "todays" cirriculum To a Secualr - Eco-fascist - PRO Abortion - Pro Gay - Anti Christian - pro (winter Festival in Feb my ass.!)...screaming left wing morass.
Rather than rote learning / phonetics which work, we have all sorts of competely STUPID methodology that doesnt..yet considered dogma by the so called intelectual elite that run our School Systems. Need only to see what happens when you give out a zero...right.?
cheers from Fort Mac
Aa for the Media...my awakening (sorta like waking up in the Matrix), happened while I was living in Ontario and when the Teachers struck during the Mike Harris Cons Govt. The CBC was just dripping with innuendo/sarcasm and disgusting left wing view of the strike - giving only on-screen time to the poor welfare/single mom that had to juggle kids not in school and how terrible it was of the Govt to make the poor teachers go on strike. When they did show a 2 parent family, well then, it was Dad driving his BMW SUV - Mom in a Lexus parked on the driveway of a MacMansion in Oakville and the slant was totally negative there.
That revelation disgusted me - since that time I have ZERO use for the CBC. CTV/Global pretty much the same lame tripe as well.
I watch Fox and sometimes the Sun if I am able to get it. The rest...just garbage. The love in for Obummer and soon to be Little Pony is continuing evidence of their screaming left wing bent.
Parents should never let their children grow up to be journalists... lowest of the low.
This article could be directly applied to Canadian journalism. Jack Layton got a bye in the last election. He was never really asked difficult questions like 'How will you pay for that?'
Harper's decisions are regularly discussed in a one sided way with little effort to be balanced.
They are too dumb to realize that communism is doomed. The parasitic educated class with "studies" degrees are only employable by the government in good times, otherwise they are worse than useless, as are their illegal immigrant welfare clientele. Unfortunately they'll tax us into penury before their socialist paradise goes bankrupt. Harper can only delay the inevitable. Pity.
Sammy was right, this is a must read.
ET, exactly!. My sister-in-law and son-in-law would agree with you.
This line, “Professing themselves wise, they became fools . . . ”, sums up the vast majority of today's press very well.
"there is few in Canada and lots more outside canada need to get immigrant here to do changes", sure, more camel herders and young girl killers, that will fix it.
"That revelation disgusted me - since that time I have ZERO use for the CBC. CTV/Global pretty much the same lame tripe as well. " Steakman
Aint it the truth though. They both display the identical left wing bigotry, the only real difference between CBC and CTV is CTV does not suck over a billion tax dollars every year.
Devastating essay. Absolutely devastating.
I suggest we start emailing it to members of our distinguished media. It would be fun. We should have a list...
I fear you are right oldfart, western civilization has peaked and is now on a continual downward trek for a few hundred years.
This has been abetted by "journolista" who have no connection to science or economics, they just champion the latest charlatan promising more goodies to be paid for at a later date.
I remember some years ago when a pundit said the Conservatives could no longer be considered a truly national party because of insufficient MPs in Ontario and Quebec.
In the meantime, the Libs had elected nobody west of Winnipeg but not a word was mentioned about that.
I may be missing or confusing some of the details but it went something like that and it was very revealing.
I long ago concluded that journalist, were failures from the sleazy used car salesmen schools
Very well put essay. I fear its too late though. The damage has been done.
Why do I say that its to late. The moral inertia that has killed 50 million babies. Does not go away. Even if you did turn all around, the damage has been done. The mentality of a people wounded beyond repair.
This is why the mad now run us. The reason Both Ancient Israel & Judea was destroyed was for child sacrifice. Not Idol worship, not other evils.God could if people repented mend that. Not destroying their own get though. Killing their own children made them too weak to recover even if God wanted it. Which He did not because of innocent blood shed.If you believe in God than it makes sense that there will be Judgment, if you don't. Look at history with the fact we have killed more than 5 million Canadians than imported out enemies to replace them. To understand the Future , look at the past.Look at those Nations that destroyed themselves like Carthage, Phoenicia, Rome, Europe et all. When morality becomes this busted its a one way ride down to the pit, socially as well. The economic latter as people panic & stronger peoples arise. Mean while they look for a savor than find only devils in waiting.
As this culture crumbles from Athens, to LA. The destruction of our population with its attendant contempt for life. No matter who rules, will have decided this in the 70's. Thats when we drank the poison of liberalism into a state of ghouls of the worst sort.
No civilised person would drink Pabst.
An interesting read. I wonder what the author makes of Mary Matalin being married to James Carville. Does this mean that there's hope for Carville yet?
On the main topic, bang on. Given that gross generalizations are always wrong (yes, I know....) groups that one fits into very well tend to become more insular over time (as part of the fitting or belonging is a desire to be around others who are like you). I'm an engineer. There are a number of jokes and stereotypes (which are usually close to the truth) as a result of how we are trained to think about the world, and how that guides our actions. We cannot live entirely in a bubble, if we don't meet with the construction crews, owners, and others on a regular basis, we won't keep our jobs. My profession has a built in reality check. Journalism does not. How many of the reporters covering Ralph Klein going to his favorite hole in the wall for a drink would feel comfortable having a drink there and talking with the regulars? Klein was, in his own way, connecting to a part of his past and a segment of society that doesn't normally see the light of day. I like to think that that helped keep him grounded (even though his spending towards the end of his tenure would make a drunken sailor blush). What grounds reporters? Apparently not ratings, nor readership. They still have a long way to fall.
