If scientists can predict climate a hundred years in the future, is a few hours of quake warning too much to ask?
Don't think of it as "scapegoating". Think of it as precedent!
Update for those who, like I, wondered if there might be more to this story than is being reported - there's more to this story than is being reported. (h/t Mark)

Y2Kyoto: Guilty As Charged!
Posted by Kate at 7:28 AM
And here I am commenting in the future!
SDA is truely amazing.
I want Hanson charged with a criminal offense, here, in anticipation of sea level rise I bought a floating dock, i live about 5 miles from the water, but Jimmy promised.
No-one was held accountable for eugenics. I cant see it happening to the People o the Fruit Fly.
And while the 'precedent' puts a smile on my face... that is way too slippery a slope.
As always, the burden of proof lies with he who makes the claim.
The problems are:
1) There is only roughly 0.2% of real climate scientists in the world who support cAGW but...
2)cAGW is sexier than earthquakes,sooooo...
3)it is easier to suck in the naive, gullible, scientifically braindead sheeples/politicians/grant seekers...
4)and once this 0.2% has the politicos/UN on their side, they can...
5) literally commit genocide, and not a peep will be raised legal-wise(is that a word).
We are soooooo FUBARed.
I just know that trailer parks cause tornadoes.
This verdict seems nuts BUT, they should have had enough sense not to predict the unpredictable, i.e. that no "big one" might be coming.
http://rightreactions.blogspot.com/2012/10/earthquake-in-community-of-science.html
They should have told them to park their butts outside at night for a few weeks or months because a big quake is always possible. After all, all Italians are immune to pneumonia, influenza, and colds. And the folks in SF and LA should heed the advice of these brilliant Italian townspeople too. There is a big quake coming there too.
The verdict was brilliant! Of course it was the fault of those scientists from other parts of Italy. Some of the buidings collapsed in the quakes. Why did they collapse? It was not the shoddy craftsmanship of their neighbors that was OK'd by corrupt local building inspectors. If that was true, they might have to realize that their own neighbors took a chance on killing them for a few bucks. And they might have to blame their own neighbors, not someone from far away.
That would be awkward.
I know it's wrong, but it gives me pleasure to imagine Dr. Fruitfly in lockup.
Great point Kate. God knows it takes a blogger in Saskatchewan to notice this comparison. In a way, scientists are getting their just desserts. I'll bet they're all global warming hysterics. Let them sit in jail for a while.
Does this mean we can throw David Suzuki in jail for all of the predictions he got wrong? Oh, the irony!
I have to admit its ridiculous scientists go to jail for not warning about an earthquake no one can predict. The irony is though that I relish is they set themselves up for this as modern day infallible oracles. Particularly concerning weather.
When a volcano goes off if I where a scientist & people died. Time to leave the Country. At one time people where smart enough to know science works on theory. So nobody would call you on it. When you take theory, than try to turn it into fact for money or political advantage. Using education turning it into dogma. Jail becomes your just Deserts.
Dang. Max beat me to it while I was still typing my post.
We should compile a list of charges to levy against Dr. Fruitfly.
Predicting a global ice age.
Predicting the disappearance of the ozone.
Predicting civilization would be destroyed by CO2.
What else has this nutcase gotten wrong in his luster-free career as an activist with a PhD?
Every time the "religion of peace" murders or rapes a westerner, a Liberal Progressive should be hung in compensation.
Stupid scientists! Coulda saved their own dumb asses by sacrificing a few virgins!
Oh wait. That only works on volcanoes...
I suppose I should be more sympathetic to the convicted Italians, but if you work for something with the trendy and aggressive name of
"National Commission for the Forecast and Prevention of Major Risks" you are asking for it. Older more modest names might have been
"Geophysical Institute", "Seismological Laboratory", "Seismological Observatory" or something similar, which don't make any claim at all
other than that earthquakes are being studied. Oh the title was so grand, oh the job sounded so glamorous, oh the money was so sweet - and oh,
the prison time will be so hard. Tant pis.
Climate Change scientists are fully aware of the implications of being on the wrong side of the politics when the pendulum (or metaphorical guillotine) swings. Not so long ago they asked to be given complete immunity from prosecution.
"The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) issued it’s formal request for immunity from prosecution to “protect” researchers who have provided “evidence” supportive of the man-made global warming scare story. The perplexing plea will likely reverberate throughout the general scientific community as further affirmation that many climate scientists were not conducting honest research after all. John Bolton, a former U.S. Ambassador to the UN, questioned the motives, “The creeping expansion of claims for privileges and immunities protection for UN activities is symptomatic of a larger problem.”"

So let me get this right ... a bunch of "scientists" sell themselves for a bit of the public purse, claiming to be "experts".
They give all sorts of advice, to government and the public.
When things start to rattle and shake, the public asks the "experts" they have been paying to give advice.
The advice is that its nothing. Sit tight.
People sit tight, until the roof falls in on their heads.
The survivors get annoyed with the "experts".
The experts then claim that they can't be blamed since its impossible to predict anything about the field in which they previously claimed to be "expert". I.e. there is no such thing as an expert in the field since all events are purely random.
So, the "experts" were nothing of the sort, never were. Or, they lied.
Either way, they should be looking at legal action against them.
Vox Day hit the ball out of the park on this one earlier today.

Any Man who has ever lived with a Women knows this "Study" is BS. I bet this was run by radical feminists who are as usual trying to prove Women are no different than Men.
Study Questions Existence Of PMS
New research suggests that the phenomenon of premenstrual syndrome, known more commonly as PMS, may not occur the way many have thought over the years.

Starting in a minute on PBS
a report on the lies and cheating about global warming
If you have not watched the Independent Candidate's debate on RT-TV, you missed a significant media presentation. If someone can find a link to video, it belongs in a post on this blog (IMHO).
Am I the only one here who gets headaches trying to read through ok's posts in the vain attempt to understand it?
Texas- Here's a hint, You can skip it!!
I believe Michael Mann is suing Mark Steyn and others...probably for telling the truth.
From L. C. Bennet's post:
"The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) issued it’s formal request for immunity from prosecution to “protect” researchers who have provided “evidence” supportive of the man-made global warming scare story. The perplexing plea will likely reverberate throughout the general scientific community as further affirmation that many climate scientists were not conducting honest research after all. John Bolton, a former U.S. Ambassador to the UN, questioned the motives, “The creeping expansion of claims for privileges and immunities protection for UN activities is symptomatic of a larger problem.”"
I know some of those climate "scientists" have hollered for various fossil fuel executives to be jailed for crimes against the planet. Now they want to be immune from prosecution in case they have overstated the case?
Bah!
A note, Kate, that the down-dressing continues at Vox.
http://voxday.blogspot.ca/2012/10/the-forked-tongue-of-fetishist.html
It's a thing of beauty, I tell you.
The update makes this story a lot more sensible. These guys got charged and convicted of gold-bricking their job, which was -risk assessment-, not earthquake prediction.
Funny how the media story on all this is completely dis-informative, eh?
Gore: "The science is settled"
No caveats at all there.
Sounds similar in confidence to the earthquake scientist's statement.
So Big Al can be held responsible for all the hardship and expense resulting from his climate alarmism crusade. Talk about an earthquake !! $Billions and $Billions if not $trillions of dollars worth.
Albert got rich with his scam but he may not be able to cover the whole shitero..
The Italian indictments have nothing to do with facts or anything BUT the exercise of power in a corrupt socialist state.
Italy is a failed nation that has been brought low by the commie blight. This episode is just another symptom of the Italian bllight.
Fie this und "Social Disease".
The update article is quite coherent. Yes, the convicted scientists were remiss. If one can't predict something then one had better say so up front.
"20% risk of a quake over the next month" is a perfectly honest thing to say, and weather forecasters do make such statements.
Hurricane predictors are very careful about probabilities, and about how the forecasts are made - read through http://www.nhc.noaa.gov.
Physically, the prediction problem is the same except in consequences to bending a twig or thin branch, not completely dry, smoothly and uniformly.
One knows within a minute of when it will break, and within a couple of centimetres where it will break. Now amplify the scale of the branch by 10000 or 1000000,
and the time scale similarly. The scales of length and time then become geological. The uncertainty in position becomes several km;
the uncertainty in time a matter of months or years. From the geological perspective the prediction is precise; from human perspective, it is almost useless.
Similarly, weather forecasts that pilots regard as useful and reasonably accurate can be useless for a person on the ground.
Mark Steyn will make mincemeat out of these posers.
Philip @ 8:50 p.m. has it about right. The technocrats want to micro-manage everyone's lives based on scientific and other "evidence". But they want to be immune from prosecution when they ignore or evade the evidence, for whatever reason.
In other words, they want all the benefits without any of the responsibilities.
In Canada, I always refer back to a Supreme Court decision in October 2001 named Cooper v. Hobart. In it, the Court essentially said that government regulators cannot be held responsible for their own failures, whether due to incompetence, laziness or malfeasance. It was a crass and irresponsible judgment, but it does give opponents of regulations all the ammunition they need. All the more so since the Court ruled in 2008, in St. Lawrence Cement, that a company can still be found liable for pollution even though it adhered to government guidelines. Together, these decisions mean that individuals and corporations can be held responsible for their actions without any regulations at all!
As for the first Vox Day column, I have a huge problem with the phrase "Let Reason be silent when Experience gainsays it." Reason is man's tool for gaining experience and integrating new knowledge into the body of knowledge he already has, by resolving any contradictions that may arise. That's probably what the author means, but unfortunately as phrased it reflects the alleged reason-versus-reality dichotomy that is a pernicious offshoot from the philosophy of Immanuel Kant. There is no contradiction between reason and experience.
