This practice is also common in the Philippines, but at New Year's rather than at weddings, and they use M16s rather than AKs. I've been there for a couple of New Years and according to the newspapers as many as 30 people die nationwide during the celebrations. One year I remember reading that a small child died while sleeping, from a returning bullet that crashed through the roof of a house. They also set off fireworks, aiming rockets at each other. I made the mistake of stepping outside of my hotel at midnight to observe the celebration and found that rockets were flying along the street in front as two groups were firing at each other, Numerous fires result and the dominant sound after midnight is of sirens of fire engines racing to extinguish the blazes. OTOH I was in Cody Wyoming on the evening of July 4th one year watching a number of forest fires break out on a nearby mountainside started by misdirected fireworks. Stupid occurs in many different places, though the video posted here exceeds anything I've observed elsewhere. Notice that most of the firing is not directly upward, so the tumbling lead probably affects a different tribe.

It reminds me of Arafat's funeral. The Palestinian Authority guards firing warning shots straight up to clear the way for the funereal helicopter to land... while it was hovering directly overhead. How they didn't shoot it down I'll never know.

If you take a look at the photo in the NP there is a transformer supported by two posts on the other side of the wall. Perhaps someone tapped into the high voltage side to get free electricity. That would explain the lethality, 110V won't kill you unless you're extremely unlucky but 4400V (or more) will kill your whole family.

for the record Saudi Arabia has been converting to 230vac for the last few years.
It is interesting to note that most (if not all) victims were from one tribe. I'm willing to bet that said tribe was probably not in the royal families blood line either.
