Tonight we travel back to the 1930's, before the official start date of WW2, when Mussolini was conquering Ethopia and was Hitler taking over both Austria and Czechoslovakia. An 18-part radio documentary series called "The Sound of War" was produced by Bud Greenspan and narrated by his brother David. The first episode, entitled "Munich, Victory Without Bloodshed", is a truly fascinating listen, and a vivid reminder to today's leaders of what happens when you give in to bullies.

Your reader tips are much appreciated in the comments.

I said long ago on this blog that Gov. Chris Christie was just a loudmouth oaf, and not reliable. I rest my case:

http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/10/30/republican-governor-chris-christie-lauds-obama-for-outstanding-hurricane-sandy-response/

What *exactly* has Obama done in the hurricane response that was so outstanding?? I mean it's fine if Christie feels he has to be a little diplomatic, but his true colours have been showing for a long time. Why does he have to praise Obama?? Why not praise the actual people doing the work if he feels he has to praise someone.

I'll tell you why - because all that idiot is thinking about at this point is his own re-election in New Jersey.

Thank goodness Romney did not pick this overweight low class fool as his running mate.

If you'd like an example of how incredibly vapid the "journalists" in Europe are, listen to this discussion from yesterday when Boston's Michael Graham tries to explain U.S. politics to Irish "journalist" Philip Molloy.

The people of Ireland are getting their information from Molloy. Any wonder why their views of America and Republicans are so screwed up?!

Folks, please ignore my post about the alternative link to the WSJ article that Robert posted. Like a fool, I posted the same link as him.

"PETA Demands Roadside Memorial for Fish That Died in Traffic Accident"

One might think this is a joke but ... it's PETA, folks!

From zerohedge - He's writing about the US gov't, but he could be writing about the Ontario Liberals, any Quebec gov't, and more:

The key difference is that the government holds the power of coercion and the citizens do not. Thus those in government who seek to serve the interests of their unions, colleagues, departments, and agencies can impose fees and taxes on all citizens to fund their own perquisites and power.

From the point of view of those inside government, sharply rising parking tickets, higher property taxes, and so on are small prices to pay for essential services. But as citizens observe government services degrading even as fees and taxes increase, they see little value being added, even as self-service and moral hazard remain in institutionalized abundance.

Two destructive feedback loops are generated by this divide: Governments, desperate for more revenues, ignore public resentment and loss of trust, which only deepens the disconnect between those in government and the public. And the private citizenry sees a lack of accountability, soaring public debt, accounting trickery, political dysfunction, and mal-investment of public funds as the hallmarks of their government.

Well, the best that can be said for Obama, at this stage, is that he has certainly lost the campaign, if not yet certainly the election.

Leaving aside the innumerable times I have said to myself over the past four years, "Did he and the Democrats actually just say and/or do what I think I just heard and/or saw?", the weirdest part of all is how he has Bill Clinton out there for him. In the latest case, Bill was campaigning in Minnesota, talking about how Obama's policies are "better", because the impact of Sandy proves that "climate change" is a major problem.

I had the chance to see George W. Bush and Bill Clinton in Toronto in May, 2009, with Frank McKenna in the chair (I bought tickets for me, my wife, my sister and a friend of mine): despite what the CBC claimed about which of them people were actually going there to see and hear (and the protests that would accompany GWB), I couldn't find a person around me who wasn't there to see George (thousands in the room -- minimum ticket price $200), with the Toronto Police outnumbering the anti-Bush protestors outside (maybe 150) 1.5 to 1, whereupon George mopped the floor with Bill -- to a tumultuous standing ovation.

Obama's not going to win for one simple reason: he's lost the women's vote. Some men, confused as they have been taught to be, can believe that Mitt Romney is some kind of latter day Don Draper (assumed identity) from some hick town in some mid-western state. Ann is a bit like Margaret Roberts, and everybody knows that Mitt is all about Ann.

Overall, I'd put the chances of an electoral college victory for Barack at no more than 25%. I'd put the chances for Mitt at 50% (it appears pretty much certain now that Ohio is going to go for Mitt, which makes the math way easy). I'd put the chances of 1980 for Mitt at 25%.

Well if you can't trust an EMPLOYEE, you skid him. It's that simple(you hope)..

In all the superficial coverage of the storm "Sandy" one thing that stood out to me was the whole businesss of the tall ship Bounty being sunk in the storm.

Just what the heck was this vessel doing in the middle of the storm path in the first place?

“She’s a sailing ship, and she was heading to her winter port,” owner Robert Hansen said.

“They were aware there was a hurricane. We’ve been through much worse than this...."

Owner says ship was enroute to winter port

So in spite of the week long build up of media warnings and inspite of fact that half of NYC was evacuated and shut down for this storm among other things ... the people responsible for the ship and the lives of the crew deemed it reasonable to have the vessel exposed to the storm at sea.

As if they could not wait a few days!

fiddle @12:02, ET didn't really say that, did she? Any child capable of talking is capable of yelling "no fair!" (Actually, socialists love this line. We just have a different idea of what's fair than they do; people have argued that conservatives prefer the concept of justice to fairness, but I'll leave that.)

Here's what ET said.

(Is it 'cause she's an atheist? Is that the problem?)

JohnG @11:46,I saw that Andrea Mitchell thing happen live today and couldn't believe what I was hearing. Most hypocritical comment was,she stated they had 'contacted the Red Cross to get answers'...for pete's sake, the pathetic msm can chase down the Red Cross in a dire emergency to try and get a bit of 'dirt' to smear Mitt..where the H are they on the Benghazi story?? Jesus wept.

It's one thing to give in to bullies when you have the means and backing to at least give as good as you get.
Great Britain in the mid to late thirties was in desperate economic shape and trying to steer a shaky crash
rearmament program into something coherent and sensible to put some muscle on its starved army, navy,
and air force. There was no political unanimity in Britain for taking on Hitler when he was weak and barely
sufficient military resources to survive his initial onslaught when he finally went to war. The war plan of his
general staff posited a start to any needed hostilities by 1946 when Germany's military power would be
unstoppable. Hitler couldn't wait that long for economic reasons and went for broke a bit too early.

Most on here hope that Romney can save the USA economy if elected. Fact is we truly do not know if he can or if he has the will. Better than Obama might not be good enough.

If he fails then the convoluted definition of free enterprise that exists today will be forever
branded. It will only be resurrected after years of misery.

Hitler didn't actually take over Czechoslovakia. Slovakia seceded and set up its own government; the government of Czechoslovakia dissolved; and there were no preparations in place either for a national Czech government or for provincial governments in the Czech provinces of Bohemia and Moravia. So, rather than let them dither around and sort it out, Hitler took the existing anarchy as an excuse and occupied the Czech provinces so as to preserve order and protect the German minorities. (Of course, Germany had always regarded Bohemia as belonging to them anyway, so from the German point of view the annexation of Bohemia wasn't controversial, and it was only Moravia that needed the pretext. And in the circumstances it was slightly more than just a pretext, though not much more.) The Slovaks stayed independent, although since the Germans were acting to secure and guarantee their independence they naturally became strong and willing German allies.

Since the guarantees made at Munich had been to Czechoslovakia, the collapse of Czechoslavakia made them void. It's a mistake to think that Hitler broke the Munich agreement; he was, rather, freed from its obligations by circumstance.

And no, I am not saying that Hitler was a great guy or that everything he did was cool. But feel free to scream in self-righteous outrage that I am. Hitler was indeed a monster, but sometimes he was a monster just doing his job, and it's worth noting those times so as to appreciate the purely monstrous actions for what they were.
