To close out the work week, we transport ourselves across the pond to Europe and back several decades to enjoy the vocal styling of Nena, as she sings 99 Red Balloons (auf Deutsch). If you're in the mood for a little more excitement, here's an extended commercial of sorts for the super durable Go Pro camera.

Your reader tips, in any language you prefer, are much appreciated in the comments.

Friday afternoon, Michael Graham & Co. in Boston mocked MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell endlessly. You can listen to some of it here and here. ABSOLUTELY HILARIOUS!!!

And the way I see it, the Fed, ECB and global central bankers today fight a losing battle. The mountain of global debt, securities, and derivatives, along with this destabilizing global pool of speculative finance, just inflate larger by the year – and after each policy response. And the more outrageous the policy measures implemented to try to resolve each crisis, the more these desperate measures further inflate the global Bubble. Ironically, the ongoing assurances of central bank liquidity seem to ensure an eventual crisis beyond the liquidity capacity of central banks. Happy 25th Anniversary, you aged and ornery Credit Bubble. They’ll be reading, writing about and studying you for at least the next century.

http://fullcomment.nationalpost.com/2012/10/19/cheerleaders-in-texas-launch-a-lawsuit-for-the-right-to-call-on-g-o-d/

The issue is whether cheerleaders and other students can display messages invoking God at football games.

The case is going through the courts, but the correct answer is: Yes, they can. The separation of church and state means the public schools cannot proselytize for one religion or another. It does not mean that students must be forbidden from expressing their own beliefs.

The school system is coercive, through compulsory attendance for several hours each day, and through tax dollar support. If the coercive state can encroach upon your time to the point that you don't have any free time left, then your freedoms are destroyed.

The students should win their case, supported by their right to freedom of religion.

And the education system should be as separate from the state as the churches, based on the same principle.

http://life.nationalpost.com/2012/10/17/calling-catholic-groups-cult-like-does-not-amount-to-discrimination-ontario-human-rights-tribunal/

"The Ontario Human Rights Tribunal has dismissed a complaint against a women’s studies professor who fought a Catholic volunteerism program at Brock University, saying her anti-Catholic comments were offensive, but not akin to discrimination."

They were certainly akin to discrimination, but mere comments do not amount to discrimination.

"Although the complainant was treated differently due to his religious beliefs, the tribunal wrote: 'I cannot see how the respondent’s comments about him were vexatious, or known or ought reasonably to be known to be unwelcome, no matter how personally offensive and hurtful he found them to be. Accordingly, the respondent’s comments did not amount to substantive discrimination.'"

So does this establish once and for all that mere comments are not actionable, despite hurt feelings? Or is it still a case of Christians being fair game while anyone who offends (for example) a Muslim will be hung out to dry?

The tribunal got this one right. It's all the other ones that were wrong.

http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/politics/article/1273089--dismiss-challenge-of-ontario-catholic-school-funding-government-lawyers-ask-court

This one is rather messy and raises several different legal issues, not all of them obvious.

Suffice to say that the current system is unfair to non-Catholics, and that the proper solution is to implement a voucher system so that every parent can contribute his tax dollars to the school of his choice. Those who want a monopoly public school system, susceptible to being taken over by an ideological lunatic fringe, are beneath contempt and exceedingly dangerous to our freedoms.

I saw an article in the National Post, but this link is to the Calgary Herald:

Stephen Boissoin wins on appeal; free speech is allowed again. Let's hope this is the end of it. It is unlikely to be overturned by the Supreme Court, given its ruling in Bou Malhab last year.

http://www.reagancoalition.com/articles/2012/20121019004-binder-full.html

Someone did some digging and discovered that Obama had a "binder full of muslims" back in 2009 when he was filling positions in his administration.

Of course, the real work will be finding the lefty outrage from 2009.

While the vocal styings are catchy, I would only remind you that Nena and this song are a perfect fit for the term "useful idiots". She would fit in perfectly at a convention of Obama voters...

Kevin Jackson @ 6:52, that would be because the left is in cahoots with the Muslims to bring down liberal democracy.

Yes, the English version of this song was all right, but a bit bland. The German lyrics are a good deal meatier, and more importantly, she really sings them like she means it. What a nice little moment of nostalgia. Thanks.

"1) 1997 World Series, Game 4

Perhaps the most memorable World Series game in terms of how cold it was occurred back on Oct. 22, 1997 in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Florida Marlins played Game 4 against the Cleveland Indians in a winter-like chill. At first pitch, the temperature was 38 degrees with a wind chill of 18 degrees. Snow flurries fell throughout the game and ice patches formed on the infield. This game is officially the coldest World Series game on record. MLB didn't track weather records until the 1970s so it's certainly possible there were colder games prior to the 70s."

"THE CAUSES OF THE EARLY "PALATINE" EMIGRATIONS"

"To the curse of devastation was added an unkind prank of nature, when at the end of 1708 a winter, cruel beyond the precedent of a century, set in to blight the region. As early as the beginning of October the cold was intense, and by November 1st, it was said, firewood would not burn in the open air! In January of 1709 wine and spirits froze into solid blocks of ice; birds on the wing fell dead; and, it is said, saliva congealed in its fall from the mouth to the ground.(11) Most of Western Europe was frozen tight. The Seine and all the other rivers were ice-bound and on the 8th of January, the Rhone, one of the most rapid rivers of Europe, was covered with ice. But what had never been seen before, the sea froze sufficiently all along the coasts to bear carts, even heavily laden. (12) Narcissus Luttrell, a famous English diarist of that day, wrote of the great violence of the frost in England and in foreign parts, where several men were frozen to death in many countries. The Arctic weather lasted well into the fourth month. Perhaps THE EARLY PALATINE EMIGRATION 5 the period of heaviest frost was from the 6th to the 2.Sth of January. Then snow fell until February 6th. 14 The fruit trees were killed and the vines were destroyed. The calamity of this unusually bitter weather fell heavily on the husbandman and vine-dressers, who in consequence made up more than half of the emigrants Of 1709."

One of the many annoying things I've been known occasionally to do is ask people what tune they have stuck in their head. I find it's a wonderful test of a song's quality: can I be forced to listen to this in the privacy of my brain off-and-on for up to a week and not hate it forever? (In very few cases is the answer yes.)

David Frum has a very good article in the National Post today "Why Benghazi Matters." The issue makes it clear that Obama's Middle East Policy is in shambles.
