I've never been a big fan of "greatest quotes" lists, but Right Wing News' The 25 Best Quotes From Thomas Sowell is great.

Math is hard:

"Baumgartner came down in the eastern New Mexico desert minutes after jumping from his capsule 28,000 feet, or 24 miles, above Earth."

There's 5280 feet in a mile, so that makes 126,720 feet in 24 of them, right?

AP, if I'm better at numbers than you are you've got problems.

Black Mamba, 5:18a.m. --

They might have meant 128,000 feet, but how can a mistake like this have been published? Does nobody proofread their work?

Either way, this is precisely why, as we have been discussing, all you get from these innumerate, illiterate clowns is blank stares (the lights are on, but nobody's home) when you point out that an Obama lead of +2 when the sample bias is D+8 is not a lead for Obama, it's actually a lead for Romney.

Of course, as you correctly imply, if you can't do grade 8 multiplication, how can you do inferential statistics? Absolutely pathetic.

And, as if on cue, we get the WAPO/ABC News poll, which will no doubt be spun as the Romney-Obama debate had no impact; in fact, Obama has expanded his lead, blah, blah, blah...

In fact, the poll has Obama ahead by 3 and a D+9 sampling advantage. Compare that to the same effort on September 29 -- Obama ahead by 2 and a D+3 sampling advantage. So, in reality, Obama's position has actually deteriorated by five points since the debate (Democratic sampling advantage up by six, Obama lead up by one). Call Democrats and Republicans even, and Romney's actually ahead by six.

There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics

What great noble American notable said this?!:

The abandonment of the gold standard made it possible for the welfare statists to use the banking system as a means to an unlimited expansion of credit ...

The law of supply and demand is not to be conned. As the supply of money (of claims) increases relative to the supply of tangible assets in the economy, prices must eventually rise. Thus the earnings saved by the productive members of society lose value in terms of goods. When the economy's books are finally balanced, one finds that this loss in value represents the goods purchased by the government for welfare or other purposes ...

In the absence of the gold standard, there is no way to protect savings from confiscation through inflation. There is no safe store of value. If there were, the government would have to make its holding illegal, as done in the case of gold ... The financial policy of the welfare state requires that there be no way for the owners of wealth to protect themselves.
This is the shabby secret of the welfare statists' tirades against gold. Deficit spending is simply a scheme for the "hidden" confiscation of wealth. Gold stands in the way of this insidious process. It stands as a protector of property rights.

"The new Middle East coverup: Biden caught in Syria debate falsehood"

"First there was the Libya coverup. Now, we have the Syria coverup.

In last week’s vice presidential debate, Joe Biden asserted that the United States was working to isolate al-Qaeda in Syria by ensuring that aid was directed to moderate elements of the Syrian opposition. “We are working hand and glove with the Turks, with the Jordanians, with the Saudis, and with all the people in the region attempting to identify the people who deserve the help so that when Assad goes — and he will go — there will be a legitimate government that follows on, not an al-Qaeda-sponsored government that follows on,” Biden declared.

Paul Ryan immediately challenged Biden’s claim, saying that the administration’s inaction has allowed al-Qaeda to get a foothold in Syria. “The longer this has gone on, the more people, groups like al-Qaeda are going in,” Ryan said, adding, “We could have more easily identified the Free Syrian Army, the freedom fighters, working with our allies, the Turks, the Qataris, the Saudis, had we had a better plan in place.”

Biden denied it, declaring: “We are in the process now — and have been for months — in making sure that help, humanitarian aid, as well as other aid and training is getting to those forces that we believe, the Turks believe, the Jordanians believe, the Saudis believe are the free forces inside of Syria. That is underway.”

Well, according to a report in this morning’s New York Times, Biden’s statement was not true."

@ The Grey Lady, there is and he would be doing his job if Dalton went to jail.

re. Lee @3:01 - great list. Anything bashing that tedious drone Atwood is okay by me. The comments are fascinating. Says Mara: "Well: Recycling is a waste of time and money. As an enthusiastic recycler, I have to disagree with this. I feel much better when I carrie my own bag to the store, my reusable lunch box to work, and when I drop the recycling where it belongs. It's a lot what Canada has achieved worldwide, that is just my little contribution."

Mara votes, you know. Oh yes. Mara votes.

"“Clinton: ‘I take responsibility’ for Benghazi”"

"According to CNN Clinton absolved Obama and Biden of responsibility for the assault on the American consulate in Benghazi.

“I take responsibility” for what happened on September 11, Clinton said in an interview with CNN’s Elise Labott soon after arriving in Lima, Peru for a visit. The interview, one of a series given to U.S. television networks Monday night, were the first she has given about the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi.

Clinton insisted President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden are not involved in security decisions, Clinton said.

During the debate with Paul Ryan Biden said the issue of diplomatic security in Libya never reached his desk. We weren’t told they wanted more security. We did not know they wanted more security there”.

Hillary’s acceptance of the responsibility means the President can meet Romney’s questions at the next debate with a single gesture."

Someone commented somewhere that when Susan Rice was appointed ambassador that she was to report to the president and not the secretary of state; if this were true then the president would know about the security issues in Libya would he not?

I'm a big fan of Kitty Wells. Great for drowning kitties in.
