The world's largest plane, the An-225.
How big is it? Well, it's wingspan is a few feet short of the length of an American football field, goal-line to goal-line, and it's takeoff weight is -- get this -- over 1.4 million pounds.
Just to put that last stat in perspective, if a full-grown African bull elephant weighed one pound, the An-225 could hold over 1.4 million of them.
Shamelessly filched from Americandigest.org/sidelines, a choice excerpt from John C. Wright's Paterson's Field Guide to the Left:
Suicide bomber in Pakistan kills 16 people and wound 30 others in an attack on - wait for it - the local peace committee.

They're coming to take Joe away, ha ha!
EBD- "Just to put that last stat in perspective, if a full-grown African bull elephant weighed one pound, the An-225 could hold over 1.4 million of them".
S'cuse me? How does that put it in perspective?
If a cantaloupe weighed one pound, the An-225 could also hold over 1.4 million of them.....I guess...

US ambassador: Internet fee proposal gaining momentum
Kramer said the idea of an international Internet fee is "gaining more interest in the African states and also in the Arab states."
He said the United States delegation to the conference will have to redouble its efforts to convince other countries that the proposal would only stifle innovation and economic growth.

Where were you 50 years ago this month?
What were you thinking?
Cuban Missile Crisis
I was 22 years old and still on the farm. Watched the news unfold on the black and white TV over the period of about two weeks. Yes, I did worry about how the near term future would unfold, and what to do to survive. I felt I was in a better place for that than many others who lived in the cities.
Fortunately, the worst case scenario did not occur.
Re: My Boyfriend`s Back.
They look like they may have had a lot of fun, behind their boyfriend`s back.
Foobert:
Re: Cuban Missile Crisis.
"Fortunately, the worst case scenario did not occur."
I think the Kennedy Bros. are to be thanked for that.
My Dad subscribed to LIFE magazine. It was interesting to see the American perspective.
Forward Syrian freedom fighters already looking ahead to constrain jihadists: Secular rebel commanders also revealed that they are working to cut the supply lines of jihadist groups, and limit the influx of foreign fighters to their ranks.
"We watch the borders. If we find supplies entering for [jihadist groups] we will take them," said one secular FSA fighter. "We have also caught 25 foreign fighters trying to cross from Turkey. We gave them to the Turkish intelligence."
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/middleeast/syria/9606691/Syria-despatch-rebel-fighters-fear-the-growing-influence-of-their-Bin-Laden-faction.html
Plainzdrifter:
You are dead wrong. As Beschloss and others have ably documented, the crisis was caused by Kennedy putting nukes in Turkey - along the USSRs borders against the advice of many in both state and defense. The USSR responded by attempting to position missles near the USA in Cuba. Thus the crisis.
The crisis was diffused when Kennedy promised to remove the Turkish missles provided he could do it a few moths later when the publics attention was elsewhere. And that is precisely what happened.
It was Kennedy's insecurity and weakness during the bay of pigs that made him overreact and try and act tough in stationing the obsolete missiles in turkey.
(The three greatest failures of Kennedy - a massive failure as president :
Not following through on overthrowing Castro
The Cuban missle crisis
Allowing public sector workers to unionize. )
EBD, I can't think of the appropriate words to describe John C. Wright's essay, other than to say this essay is the most accurate short description of the left that I have ever read.
Thank you!
The mainstream media are openly mourning the long-delayed date in the court of the Almighty of James Coyne, the sire of pseudo-conservative MSM hack Andrew, and uncle of Pierre Trudeau's tart Deborah.
Coyne is best remembered as the governor of the Bank of Canada who devoted his tenure to sabotage of the Canadian economy at the behest of his buddies in the Liberal Party, who wanted John Diefenbaker driven from office at any price. Coyne raised interest rates in the face of a recession, increasing the cost of the borrowing requirements of the Queen (on the advice of her Canadian prime minister John Diefenbaker) to the profit of Toronto and Montreal banks, all of whom donated generously to the Liberals, and to inspire discontent against Diefenbaker. Coyne declaimed publicly against badly-needed investment in Canada by American interests (who of course never donated to the Grits).
Coyne's mischief only ended when John Diefenbaker tabled a bill for the express purpose of recalling him, which passed the House of Commons by a large majority. The Grit-controlled Senate defeated the bill, but Coyne got the message and resigned as governor.
Diefenbaker was thus the last major Western leader to take his Queen's and his nation's side against the schemes of bankers. To the delights he enjoys in the house of the Lord will now be added the much delayed torments of the traitor James Coyne.

640,000kg -285,000kg - 30,000kg = 325,000kg [870,750 lbs] max cargo wt with 10% fuel
640,000kg -285,000kg - 300,000kg = 55,000kg [147,360 lbs] max cargo wt with 100% fuel capacity.

Maximum useable fuel on a C-130 is around 60,000 pounds, fuel density for Jet-A or JP8 is around 6.74 lb/gallon and that's around 8900 gallons. The total fuel load is 45000 internal and 18700 external, = 63700 for a total of 9450 gallons (106% of the useable limit).
With full useable fuel the range is around 2400 miles, 2500 with 25000 pounds and around 5200 empty.
3.7 gallons/mile at full load
3.6 gallons/mile with 25,000 pounds
1.7 gallons/mile with no load
As usual when economy is in trouble Muslim leaders accuse Jews of (put your favorite bad thing here). This week leader of Muslim Brotherhood accused Jews of "spreading corruption"
So there is nothing new here, just another confirmation of the same, old, antisemitism.
However what I do not understand is: Why on earth western journalists do not check what they write, but mindlessly repeat false things after someone else.
The article says that "Muslims used to pray toward al-Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem before praying toward Mecca in Saudi Arabia."
I ask you, how on earth could Muslims in Medina pray towards al Aqsa mosque in Jerusalem when there was no mosque in Jerusalem at that time?

Un-furrow your brow, snagglepuss (11:33), it was *a joke*.
north of 60 your math is wrong in the second half of your post. You correctly stated the fuel load at 300000 kg and then inadvertently lost 270000 kg. in the second part.
With full fuel tanks an AN225 can carry a payload of 124,000lbs and fly approximately 14,000km
With maximum payload, 550,000lbs, the AN225 can make short hops, say Moscow to Paris. Try even that relatively short distance on 30,000kg and you will become a Gimli glider.
OK is this lady serious or playing dumb?

sorry I didn't see your correction before I posted
My apologies.
My sister and me used to joke together about how, on February 6, 2006, Stephen Harper became prime minister for life. We've quit joking about that because it's now a bit old, almost seven years on. Regardless, it seems clear to me (and my sister) that "my friend, Steve", as GWB liked to call him, is settling in for the long haul.
Have a look at these two items:
http://www.winnipegfreepress.com/canada/harper-and-marois-have-first-meeting-and-quebec-premier-calls-it-excellent---174015631.html
and
http://www.ottawacitizen.com/business/Bank+Canada+governor+fought+high+profile+battle+with+Diefenbaker/7386808/story.html
The first is interesting, IMO, because it says everything about Stephen Harper: look who's talking and look who's leaving by the back door. There was a Hitchcock movie once, with Jimmy Stewart and Doris Day, called, "The Man Who Knew Too Much". How about a movie called, "The Man Who Knew Everything, But Never Talked Too Much"? Which is also interesting, considering the Hitchcock movie and where Mr. Harper and Mme. Marois met.
The second is interesting, IMO, because of its juxtapositioning of Dief's style with that of "my friend, Steve"'s (both transplanted Ontarians, I would add). John Diefenbaker was an absolute hero to my parents, grandmother and great-grandfather, as I am sure that James Coyne was a hero to Andrew and his sister. RIP, presursor monetarist and Canadian nationalist: you need to know that have a couple of great sons (meaning Andrew and Stephen).
If useable fuel on the AN225 is around 803,770 pounds, at 6.74 lb/gallon, that's around 119,250 gallons.
With a full useable fuel range of around 8,700 miles, carrying 124,000 pounds, that's
9,050 lbs/gallon/mile at full load for the AN225
and
12,160 lbs/gallon/mile at full load for the C130

"Damien Hirst condemned for killing 9,000 butterflies in Tate show"
"The artist Damien Hirst has come under fire after it emerged that more than 9,000 butterflies died as part of an art work in his latest exhibition."
"Even by Damien Hirst’s standards it was an unusual artwork – two windowless rooms swirling with live butterflies.
Visitors to the exhibit at the Tate Modern in London observed the insects close-up as they flew, rested, and fed on bowls of fruit.
But whilst the work, In and Out of Love, was praised by many art critics when it featured in the gallery’s Hirst retrospective earlier this year, it has now landed the artist in a row with the RSPCA.
Figures obtained from the Tate reveal that more than 9,000 butterflies died during the 23 weeks that the exhibition was open.
Each week it was replenished with approximately 400 live butterflies to replace those that died – some of them trodden underfoot, others injured when they landed on visitors’ clothing and were brushed off."

Some climate scientists, such as Professor Phil Jones, director of the Climatic Research Unit at the University of East Anglia, last week dismissed the significance of the plateau, saying that 15 or 16 years is too short a period from which to draw conclusions.
Ha.
I thought Phil had been jailed for 15-16 years.
The ANN-225 sounds like an amazing aircraft, however, the important question here is could it take off if it sat on a giant conveyer belt that moved in the opposite direction and at the exact same speed of the plane's wheels?

Re: lady complaining about deer signs and too many deer crossings.
Someone sent me this a few days ago.
I heard a similar story 4-5 years back.
Clearly a joke. And quite possibly a put up by the talk show itself.
I often warn folks here to not take those obligatory UNBELIEVABLY STUPID PEOPLE calls to talk shows as necessarily genuine.
"Liberalism, Manic & Depressive"
"In the first presidential debate of 2012, we saw, up close and personal, what Harvey Mansfield called in last week’s issue the ennui of Barack Obama. Obama’s ennui is related to his dislike for the real challenges of governing. More fundamentally, his ennui reflects his declinism. What’s exciting about governing for the next four years if it’s just going to involve managing austerity at home and decline abroad? It’s a depressing prospect.
Obama is depressed because today’s liberalism is depressing. Obama is world-weary because modern liberalism is world-weary. Hope and change was just campaign talk. The real existing liberal president lives in an atmosphere of reduced hope and hostility to needed change. As Mansfield puts it, “Obama’s air of ennui in the debate arises not just from his personal character of cool but more from his thoughts about the future. He sees America in decline. He does not say it, but he sees it, and it determines his politics as well as his demeanor.”
In the vice presidential debate Thursday, we saw, up close and personal (too up close and personal), what we might charitably call the excitability of Joe Biden. If Obama is cool, Biden is hyper-caffeinated. But Obama’s ennui and Biden’s excitability are flip sides of the same liberal coin."

No it would not. It needs laminar air flow over the wings .....so while the wheels would spin on the conveyer belt at 200 knots it would not matter. Airflow is key to flight!!!!

new, you're a misunderstanderer of Islam. "Jihad" means inner struggle. Nothing to do with war. Didn't you get the memo? And Muslims aren't racist, so that little rant you directed at Osumashi @the 6:38 thread yesterday can't have happened either.

"The Mystery of Benghazi
New York Times ^ | October 13, 2012 | By ROSS DOUTHAT"
"TWENTY-FOUR hours after the American compound in Benghazi was attacked and our ambassador murdered, the tragedy seemed more likely to help President Obama’s re-election campaign than to damage it.
The White House already enjoyed more public credibility on foreign policy than on almost any other issue. When Mitt Romney reacted to the attack with a partisan broadside, portraying a news release sent out by the Cairo embassy before any violence began as a White House apology to the attackers, the president’s path forward seemed clear. He would be disciplined and careful, show anger and steel but also coolness under pressure, and let the rally-round-the-flag effect do its natural work.
What happened instead was very strange."
