Why this blog?
Until this moment
I have been forced
to listen while media
and politicians alike
have told me
"what Canadians think".
In all that time they
never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio - "You don't speak for me."

Sadest penguin on earth? Not likely!
Despite ridicule and dire warnings, this brave creature took the road less travelled, and set out on a grueling, solitary journey to seek his fortune. After countless perils, not bound by ice and snow, he found his ultimate calling.
Thus, the origin of Penguin Books, and a very happy Antarctica expatriot (but very concerned about the Obama/Biden tax plan).
But hey, no more frozen dingleberries! And that's a big plus.
Forgot his cummerbund.
Maybe the penguin was just socially awkward and couldn't stand it anymore.

Nipa Banerjee, who headed the agency’s Afghanistan operation from 2003 to 2006, said some of the comments reflect what she knows about Canadian projects in Kandahar.
“All the projects have failed. None of them have been successful,” said Ms. Banerjee, now a professor in the University of Ottawa’s school of international development.

I like this story: a billionaire is hunting Argentinian assets to get his money back from that government. He 'persuaded' Ghanian authorities to seize the Argentinian flagship! Maybe the penguin is taking a risk. Sick of the "same old same old" and wanted to experience something different.
The film maker assumes the penguin must be depressed. I guarantee in 5 years the OWS crowd will be accusing this penguin of being a part of the 1%. Who can blame them? it was born sporting a tuxedo.
Well I for one applause this penguin. The next time I have a hankering for "cool beans", I'll just have to stop by and say "hello friend".

I think that all living creatures navigate by the earth`s magnetic fields. How else would a barn swallow find his way from South America back to the same barn "south of Saskatoon?" This penguin is perhaps close to the earth`s magnetic poles. That may mess up his GPS. And they do have a "will" just like we do. Sometimes that runs amuck. Good video. Thanks!
Maybe he was just freaked out by the documentary team.
African or European swallow?
No no. Penguin. Penguin. Penguins don't live in Africa.
If you insist on subjecting yourself to Werner Herzog, I highly recommend this (in my capacity as a failed archaeologist).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_Penguin
Okay, fine. But none of them live in the jungle, do they? Or, like, the Sahara. So, you know...
I spent three winters in Yellowknife, and worked another two or three years on the coast after that. I think I understand the penguin.

The penquin is not crazy, I guess Werner Herzog never heard the song:
"One of these days, I'm gonna climb that mountain, walk up there among them clouds..."
Now if it attempted to soar, that would be a different matter.
Margaret Wente dares to talk truth about social programs targeting youth in Toronto. Her views on these programs would also pertain to all of Canada. To sum up the article, these programs are only good for the bureaucrats.

Ken -- that's a good article by Wente -- thanks for posting. They have done something weird with the comments at the Globe. Lots of people have not forgiven Margaret for her journalism "lapse" and are using this as an excuse to dismiss anything she has to say. As is often the case, she has something important to say.
Damn. That penguin story depressed me. But maybe the penguin yearned to be more than a penguin--maybe he wanted to be Jonathan Livingston Penguin--to achieve heights unknown to other penguins.

"What difference has that money made? Nobody has a clue. Nobody tracked the programs or measured the outcomes, or even collected local data on changing crime and dropout rates. City officials admit that because of the lack of basic information, it’s impossible to evaluate the impact of these investments.
But that’s not unusual. Other governments are no wiser. Hardly any of the countless programs that spend billions of dollars to help the poor and vulnerable are measured for results."

"Danish Wind Turbine Company That Received Over $50 Million In Stimulus Lays Off 800 Workers"
"A Danish wind turbine company whose subsidiaries received over $50 million in U.S. stimulus dollars announced on Friday it has cut more than 800 jobs in the United States and Canada this year and may be forced to lay off another 800 employees in North America.
This is yet another green energy company that received wasteful stimulus funds and does not even have anything to show for it.
According to Reuters, Vestas, the wind turbine maker, saw its order intake go down by 24 percent during the first half of the year.
"The U.S. wind industry has slowed, largely due to the uncertainty surrounding the Federal Production Tax Credit extension," said Martha Wyrsch, head of Vestas-American Wind Technology, Inc."

"Winter comes early in Hawaii with arrival of 50-foot surf"
"While skiers and snowboarders are waiting breathlessly for a new winter to arrive, those who get to feel it first are actually surfers in Hawaii, and if you ask them, they'll be the first to tell you winter arrived with a bang on Tuesday, as 50-foot swells generated from the first north Pacific storm of the season slammed the north shore of Maui.
As the northern Pacific storm system comes alive each winter, powerful swells begin marching across its vast expanse. Within days those swells make landfall, hitting the reefs of Hawaii before reaching the U.S. mainland days later. These massive walls of water carry tremendous energy, which is unleashed as they detonate in spectacular fashion."
