Monument honors U.S. 'horse soldiers' who invaded Afghanistan

The U.S. special operations teams that led the American invasion in Afghanistan a decade ago did something that no American military had done since the last century: ride horses into combat.

"It was like out of the Old Testament," says Lt. Col. Max Bowers, retired Green Beret, who commanded the three horseback teams.

"You expected Cecil B. DeMille to be filming and Charlton Heston to walk out."

Bowers spoke while sitting in the rural Kentucky studio of sculptor Douwe Blumberg, along with three of his former "horse soldiers."

They, along with 30 fellow commandos on horseback, are the inspiration for a new monument that Blumberg is creating, dedicated to the entire U.S. special operations community.

Story is from 2011, but still a great read.

How could that be. It was only a week ago that Barry was mocking Romney about horses and bayonets. We quickly learned that, yes, soldiers are still trained with bayonets even in the age of drones. Now we are reminded that just 10 years ago, they also rode horses into battle. Methinks the commander-in-chief knows diddly squat about the military he supposedly heads. Must have been covered in one of those boring briefings he skipped.

Obama makes jokes about horses and bayonets. I bet those two SEALS in Benghazi would have accepted even that much help.

Shouldn't that read 'Coward in Chief.'

While reading the article, play this in the background....

Yeah well....our people were mounted in A-satn back in the 80's. Discrete, quiet and able to out-flank the Soviet mechanised forces limited to the roads.

Today, the US border patrol mounts mounted patrols of the southern border...where interior department edicts ban roads to patrol the border....environment ya know.

WW2 the Soviets always enjoyed a numerical superiority in men, artillery and armour but despite being more mechanized than the Whermacht maintained 100,000 mounted troops for recon, interdicting communication and supply....the shear vastness of the country allowed the Soviet horse mounted forces to cross the porous "lines" more or less at will.

Horses will remain a factor in broken country for a long time yet.

The Special Forces are improving at a steady but slow rate.
Unfortunately, they usually lack the resources to keep out the
US Army and the State Department once they overthrow a
Muslim terrorist supporting government and victory is achieved.
So then everything gained turns into a PC bureaucratic morass (i.e. to sh*t).

I'll bet the Special Forces cowboys had bayonets too.
