A proud moment of mine was, when visiting Rome, I succeeded in breaking my wife's umbrella on a Gypsy kid who had his hand in my pocket while his mother worked to distract me. I worked with a group of Romanians a few years back. They had nothing but negative comments on the Gypsies.

I'm not an expert on Gypsies, but Levant came across as a stupid bigot. Maybe they do tend to rip off the welfare system, but so do lots of groups. Calling the whole lot of them swindlers, including the hundreds of thousands in Europe, is asinine and ignorant. How the hell would he know if it's true or not? Of course it shouldn't be criminal to say it, and of course the professional grievance mongers rending their garments on tv are idiots, but can anyone on SDA really say you're proud of what Ezra said?

The Roma are learning from the Muslims that Canada is a lawsuit heaven as long as you are from a minority group. Anyone except straight male caucasions can get into the action and reap the rewards. The Mafia and to a lesser extent the Hell's Angels and the Crips/Bloods also have their own language and rituals. Especially when it comes to the Sicilian Mafia, you have to hail from a very particular area of Italy to be considered a full member. That kind of consanguinity means the Mafia are _closer_ to being a "race" than the gypsies, who have no such membership requirements.

Gypsies are not a race. The Irish Travellers or Travellers are referred to as gypsies. They are indistinguishable from Anglo/Irish types except they make a living stealing and have for hundreds of years.

Of course Ezra was not referring to the Roma who moved into Europe from India 500 years ago. These people are also often incorrectly referred to as gypsies. Even though the stereotype says they are thieves, I am sure that Ezra would not demean these people.

Someone once said that anybody daft enough to support Barack Obama was stupid, black or both. If anybody in Romania honestly thought Nicolae Ceausescu was anything but a monster, he was one of two things. He was Securitate, or he was a Gypsy.
