About Kate
Why this blog?
Until this moment
I have been forced
to listen while media
and politicians alike
have told me
"what Canadians think".
In all that time they
never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio - "You don't speak for me."

C'mon now. scarecrows can't read or think...that's why they're scarecrows.
Hey, I was an English major, which is why the title reminds me of that scene in Jude the Obscure where the boy loses his job working scaring crows. It's not as easy as it sounds...
I would love to see how he writes this up on his C.V./resumé.
Well at least he's working.
Are you kidding, that's my dream job!! I could sit in the middle of the field all day playing my guitar, and when the partridge show up blast them out of the sky. I could get paid to do my two favourite things, play my guitar and shoot partridge. That would be awesome!!
He should have rounded his education off with a couple of courses on Wymens studies. Then he'd be even more valueless to the human race.
"sit in the middle of the field all day playing my guitar,"
Must be a guitar player thing - it didn't sound that bad to me either! I don't do any hunting, but I could always start, and meantime I could get in my regular 10 K running around the field.
Probably not the sort of job that's good for picking up women in bars...but considering the luck I've had with other careers, who knows?
Let's not be too quick to judge, scarecrowing was once a very honourable profession. I'd be outside with nature,protecting a food source,alone with my thoughts ,and;
I'd unravel any riddle
For any individ'le
In trouble or in pain
With the thoughts I'd be thinkin'
I could be another Lincoln

"I could be another Lincoln"
I'm gonna have that tune in my head all day. Hey, wait a minute, how did a scarecrow from Oz know about Lincoln?
" is employed to scare away partridges from an oilseed rape field in Aylsham."
I've heard about the 'killing fields' in Cambodia, but this is the first I've ever heard of these atrocities. Methinks that the partridges, unless they are traveling together in a VW van,may not be the biggest problem.
" how did a scarecrow from Oz know about Lincoln "
Actually,Dorothy brought up Mr. Lincoln.
BTW,this profession also has alternative work for the winter months so you're not sitting at home collecting pogie like other layabouts.

"Dorothy brought up Mr. Lincoln."
Your knowledge is extensive. I doff my tin funnel to you, sir.
Ten acres of rapeseed? Ten acres? Around these parts, we see canola (rapeseed) fields of 160, or 320, or 640 acres.
Hardly seems worthwhile to even get into that market with only ten acres and then have to hire a scarecrow to protect that tiny crop.
Where's phil? That farmer in England must be getting subsidized up the ying-yang if he thinks it's worthwhile to plant a mere ten acres of the stuff.
gordinkneehill at, 2012 1:42 PM
phil may just be out in the middle of a field...work and all that U kno:-)))
You could say he's outstanding in his field :-)
I'm far too dignified to work as a scarecrow. However, I'm optimistic that my new career as an avian intimidation consultant will really take off..
