In dishonour of SDA’s most annoying, angry troll, tonight we present a series of videos designed to drive him/her/it apoplectic: 1, 2, 3, & 4. Hopefully it’ll have a similar effect that Bug-Off does on mosquitoes!
All examples of farming related, or non-farm related, reader tips you’d like to share would be much appreciated in the comments.

  2. I know squat about farming or ranching but am surrounded by both where I live. Nicest, most down to earth people in the world as far as I’m concerned. Proud to know them and even prouder that they consider the wife and I as friends and neighbors.

  7. My grandfather wasn’t a farmer but he was of the same stock. He is resting at the bottom of Lake Superior right now because he was doing his job as a marine engineer in 1937 trying to deliver his load. He was a man who knew of the value of an honest job and didn’t figure this country owed him anything, in fact he thought he owed this new country for the opportunity to contribute to his new homeland. SS Neebing in October 1937 went down in a Lake Superior Storm near Nipigon. BTW, my grandmother never remarried or went on assistance. She borded out rooms to fellow seamen who needed a place to call home when ashore. She spoke Polish but insisted her family and their children speak English of this new land. I never had the opportunity to meet my grandfather.
    Funny, these new immigrants wanted to speak English and contribute to their new society. They kept their traditions, foods and culture. Now in Thunder bay as before I left there over 40 years ago, you can still find ethnic restaurant, community centres and events that celebrate their contribution to the mosaic of Canada. And guess what? It isn’t only Polish that are eating the cabbage rolls and perogie with their neighbours but the Finns and their pancakes and karjalanpiirakka, karjalanpaisti, lohiperunalaatikko, pulla, suolakala, riisipuuro, kalakeitto, hernekeitto and Finnish weiners. I’m damned if I can pronounce what is on the menu but is all tastes good, as does the stuff at the Polish hall, Italian Hall and such. These are the folks and true Canucks that asked “What can we contribute to this new country?”
    New census numbers on the major working languages for 2010 show an alarming trend.It’s not that they are speaking in one of the two “official” languages but rather a lot of other languages has worked into the languages of commerce.
    Be very afraid Ottawa as challenges to Arabic at the HRC will be along soon.

  8. To be fair to phil, farmers do get buckets of subsidy, especially in America. It’s not always monetary sometimes it’s in form of cheap grazing land or water. They are a very powerful special interest.

  10. Bloody town of Milton, Ontario – Canada’s fastest growing, I think – is building houses over some fantastic farmland in Southern Ontario. Soon it’ll butt up to Oakville, Mississauga, and the base of the Niagara Escarpment.

  18. Dairy and the other SM sector farmers literally have Licence to print money. They as anti free market as anything that Stalinists could have envisioned. They should be derided by those who believe and love freedom – not praised.

  22. Peterj: they are a pretty significant part of the AG sector in several parts of Canada. 3bb$ of farm gate receipts in Ontario – half of the entire Ag sector, for example. They are entitled cabal.

Any farmer would be excedingly happy with the return on investment that a govt worker,auto plant worker,or a bevy of other high paying jobs return with ZERO investment.Most farm subsidies only subsidize the consumer with low grocery prices.Try working all summer with no income and a ton of expenses growing a crop and then sell that crop just to pay off the loans incured plus payments on the machines and land rent,especially when the interest was in the 20% range.

However, one thing I am not conflicted about is that I don’t want my food to come from China or some other 3rd world non regulated country. If you want cheap, toxic food be my guest.   41. Just did an Angus Reid online poll about infertility treatments. You can expect the BC Liberals to announce that, as part of their Families First strategy, that they will fund in-vitro fertilization treatments. As an adoptive parent I wonder how Christy Clark thinks this will make me feel. Will she next reimburse me for the $60,000 we spent on adoption fees and expenses? I’d like some free government cash, too, ya know.
    Considering age is the #1 reason for infertility among women is it really up to the government to facilitate a woman’s choice to delay children until they’re 40?
    Maybe the BC Liberals can just stay out of my bedroom.
