I agree with the author completely. In a similar vane I think anyone wanting a sex-change operation is, for whatever reason, in need of serious mental help and not surgery. It just doesn't make sense to me.

Gay marriage was always a slippery slope initiated by selfish gay men who were thinking only of themselves. It is just a short hop from gay marriage to incest and who knows what else. Getting rid of *all* societal norms has always been an objective of the left.

I was discussing with my wife yesterday after watching the segment on O'Reilly "Is It Legal" the case of the inmate(murderer) and the Constitutional argument that his sex change MUST be paid for.

I said to my wife that "I can't see how any doctor can ethically perform such an operation, as it's clearly not in the best interest of the patient, physically or mentally".

In my view, this is the exact CORRECT argument that the article's author is making.

When laws are defined clearly and responsibly one thing does not automatically lead to another thing. That's where I think conservatives drop the ball on this, by letting the left craft those laws instead of accepting certain things, with limits, and crafting those laws ourselves.

In view of the widespread nihilism and moral relativism of today's left, why should we expect that this should continue to be so? What standard are you basing that assumption upon?

I can see why it's hard for gays to be conservative. We alienate an entire fairly large segment of people. I believe there are so many important issues and yet this seems to come up again and again.

It's stupid, because it allows the left to frame us as petty and bigoted. And then we all lose in the end. The slippery slope in my mind is we (as a group) fight against this so hard that we lose elections and then everything the left manages to pass to destroy the economy or religious rights or anything else is not just on their shoulders it's on ours as well. In my mind it's just not big enough of an issue to take a stand on.

It's not about a slippery slope - it's about people recognizing that gay people have been around forever and getting the shaft for nearly as long. It's not a slope when it's ONE thing. There is NO huge outcry of people on either side for incest or for pedophilia and there never will be. Society is better than that.

My assumption that different things are different things? I am gay, I am not incestuous and I'm not a child molester. I have not been on the receiving end of it either. It's just a fact that those things are separate. I don't like it when cross dressers and transsexuals are lumped into the same group as gays on the left, and I don't like it when child molesters and polygamists are lumped into the same group on the right. Being gay isn't the same as chopping your parts off or molesting children and I'm offended by both the left and the right when it comes to assumptions on gays.

Its nothing new. I leased a farm that was once owned by a guy that lived with his sister "as man and wife." One day, after I had it for about two years, an elderly neighbour told me that the guy was out chasing cows on foot one day when he had a heart attack and died. His sister was so devastated she took poison and did herself in.

This was in or about 1940. They had had a child who was physically deformed and was adopted out to a neighbour. It was kept "hush hush."

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

The truth about "gay marriage" is that its existence is not a necessary condition for gays to have a happy life. Many gays are extremely promiscuous, and don't want to be tied down to one partner. Those who aren't would have their needs met by the use of civil unions. Maybe not their wants, but their needs.

I'd agree with you if marriages and civil unions weren't the same under the law. Straight men and women would have the same needs met under the law with civil unions and you could have your marriages in churches. Many straights are extremely promiscuous too.

Knight 99 too true, but again I think as a party we cut our noses to spite our faces. I don't think it's going away and I think the position hurts our cause and I believe it's only important in that nobody sees how unimportant it is in the grand scheme of things. But again it's just my opinion.

The "right wing" is not homogenous, despite what lil Billy thinks. It consists of libertarians, the religious right, small government types, fiscal conservatives, and some very good-looking Ayn Rand types.

I daresay the words "gay marriage" bring out the religious ones in droves, while the fiscal conservatives couldn't care less either way.

So try not to get too upset, at least we are unlike the echo chamber on the left. Unlike them, we "righties" are allowed to disagree with one another.

For what its worth, when asked if I support gay marriage, please check A) for yes, and B) for no --- then I choose C) the government has no role in deciding who you want to love and live with.

I think the whole gay marriage issue is driven by the fact that everyone wants the same benefits and deductions (a la Income Taxes and pension benefits) as everyone else. But instead of the government deciding who can love who, they should just simplify the flipping tax code.

Truly, there is nothing new under the sun for mankind in sexual matters. Incest? Yes, a fairly universal and fairly justified social construct against it. But, that doesn't mean incest doesn't happen. The Egyptian pharaohs it seems kept it in the family quite often. And then there are those Persian elite like Xeres who married his sister and several of the Roman emperors who tried both mother and sister..... oh well. As a matter of biology, incest tends to bring out recessive genes. Sometimes these are positive but often negative. However, they rarely lead to "deformated" children but rather children with physiological problems (like heart disease or weak hips. Dogs, cats, cows, horses, and other domestic animals are often breed quite incestuously.
