"The gun not only could go in the register; turns out it was in the register."

I appreciate his efforts to clarify firearm types in Canada. However is there a need to call gun owners and sports shooters "nerds"?
There are more gun owners than people who play golf. Sports and hunting are popular in Canada.

So all the police had to do then, was look up who the owner of this registered gun was, and then arrest him.

A couple of billion dollars later, and life could be so simple.

When a guy shooting the gun is dressed in a bathrobe, to me that's pretty nerdy.

What? There were no capes available.

The best part of having a long gun registry is that if a crime is committed by someone with a stolen LG,who then departs the scene and DOESN'T turn himself in the next day despite police entreaties, is the police can then lay charges against the gun's legitimate owner for careless or improper storage.

The justice industry in Canada loves to bully honest taxpayers while affording real criminals every chance to get away with their nefarious activities.

The Liberal gentleman involved in this incident is obviously insane and with a good lawyer, should be out of the mental institution within three years. And all the Left will applaud the day he's "cured" of his terrible affliction and released.

See, it's GUNS that are the problem.

Just ask any Lib/Dipper/Green type.

Doesn't matter. The registry just made some Lieberals, police chiefs, and some beauracrats rich.Because guns kill people. The gun just jumps up and shoots somebody.Cause in the leftards world, guns have minds and move and shoot via pixie dust, unicorn farts, and hopey changy.

The root cause of the shooting is Quebec bashing/hating incitement in the anglophone press.

I would like to see the internet cache of this guy to see what he was reading but I have my suspicions.

Some conflicting info for me:

- Liberal with a rifle (what??)
- Liberal with a properly registered rifle (ok, that makes sense).

I caught the politicized reference to an “automatic” on the MSM yesterday myself. What a bunch of clowns.

The only thought I had was: thank god he didn’t roll up with a vanload of diesel and fertilizer and blow the whole building down like Oklahoma City. Instead he used a crappy little semi-auto and only one or two people were hurt instead of hundreds.

Yawn.

This is the same crap that goes on in Gaza or Detroit, we need to separate and build a huge Israeli style fence before all this Quebecois violence finds its way to our streets.

Keeping them penned in with welfare alone like the Liberals do with blacks in Detroit won’t hold them forever, we need more to protect ourselves.

"There is a natural law operating in Canadian media whereby the more knowledge you have of firearms, the more hilarious you find the press and TV reports" , yeah right!

Actually, there is a natural law operating in Canadian media whereby the more knowledge you have of ANYTHING, the more hilarious you find the press and TV reports.

"guns" is an easily observed self-indicting metaphor of our intellectual superiors. :)

Qweeebec dipper, I think you are dribbling spittle again, Quebec bashing only occurs in the minds of obsessed lefties who wander around like the feeble minded intent on finding something to bitch about. The entire PQ election campaign was essentially an anglo bash and surprisingly you are silent on that. Here's you chance, a site you've never been banned from, an opportunity to beg forgiveness from all the Anglos your ilk have demonized for the last 3 decades.. come on, man up, it'll make you a better person..

"The root cause of the shooting is Quebec bashing/hating incitement"

Quebec has one of the highest suicide rates in the Western world. Are Anglophones making them do that, or are they acting on a realization most of us had a long time ago? It's an academic question; I don't care much either way.

Ken (Kulak) at September 7, 2012 10:14 AM,
Excellent link! At least we got that issue settled -- although I doubt that CTV will mention that Bain is a Liberal. CTV seems to focus on his large "arsenal" -- which is code for "conservative" and part of the "vast right-wing conspiracy".

Ironically as a conservative myself, I know practically nothing about guns as far as ever having the slightest interest, owning or handling them. But I guess I ended up a bit of a "gun nerd" purely through exposure during the '80's civil war in Central America -- I could immediately see the Bain gun wasn't an AK-47 just from the partial view of it, having seen so many people running around with AKs back in the day.

My favourite Kalashnikov is the "Chinese" Viet Nam version with the folding wooden stock -- looks totally cool. After the civil war one of the demobilized resistance fighters actually offered to sell me one for a measely $50 (US)! (Alas I had to reject the offer since I was returning to Canada).

Glad to see that the Liberals' gun control is keeping Liberals out of trouble these days Ken...as far conservatives go we just use our common sense...
;)

It's amazing the way the Anti's waved off the contention: "What do all slaves have in common"; in the comments.
The Left-Liberal faction obviously believe that "no one can be trusted with a gun".
This is no doubt a very dangerous belief principal, for 2/3 the citizenry of a supposed Democracy, to hold.
In the eleventh hour of the end of the gun registry, bureaucrats seized demonized guns from peaceful citizens without compensation and without a whimper from our democratically elected government.

If the anglophone media is inciting hatred and causing native Quebecers to shoot separatists then I guess they're on the right track.

The Left-Liberal faction obviously believe that "no one can be trusted with a gun".

Actually the Liberal Left don’t trust themselves with a gun! Especially their Ritalin popping game-boy addicted kids who may just pop off loony mom & dad one day if they don’t do themselves in first.

Like anything else the liberal left are jealous to the core that “Conservatives” can mentally handle owning a gun. They themselves generally wouldn’t pass the required mental health and criminal background checks.

“Have you ever been convicted of a crime” – FAIL

“Have you ever been treated for a mental disorder” - FAIL

“Have you ever been treated for substance abuse”? – FAIL.

The LSM is lying again(still). A leftard with a gun? Doesn't exist.Same as a Queerberqer with a brain,or an Obama supporter not on welfare/food stamps.Mythical creatures.

When that news broke there was a photo of a police officer picking up the rifle, with only the last few inches of the barrel visible and I immedietly identified it for what it was.

Of course I've seen it labelled as an "assault rifle" in numerous places. Oh well, the media is generally pretty ignorant when it comes to firearm technicalities.

I'd best go out and buy a CZ 858 quickly now before they are banned.

Frenchdip said: "The root cause of the shooting is Quebec bashing/hating incitement in the anglophone press."

Hate to break it to you dumb@$$, but the "root cause" of this shooting was mental illness.

As for Quebec bashing, you're probably responsible for more of that all by yourself than the National Post. You want to see Quebec's reputation improve in the rest of Canada? Stop begging more welfare out of Ottawa.

langmann asked: I appreciate his efforts to clarify firearm types in Canada. However is there a need to call gun owners and sports shooters "nerds"?

Some gunnies and shooters are nerds. Some golfers are nerds.

Some of both sets are not nerds.

Cosh's use of "nerd" does not refer to all gun owners or sports shooters - but the "gun nerd" is the subtype most likely to have done what he talked about - showing off a vz.58 at a range.

(This also acts contra 44guy's misreading; Cosh did not say or imply that the only reason anyone would own a vz.58 is to "show off at the range" - he said that the Gun Nerd type was the one who'd be most likely to do that showing off.

The difference between the statement and the interpretation taken is significant, and tells me more about 44guy's comprehension [or biases] than about Cosh's alleged pejorative.

Example: If I say "... more likely to have seen a NASCAR race than a douchebag showing off his Porsche on the street", I'm not saying that only douchebags own Porsches or that people only buy them to show off somewhere - I'm saying that it's primarily the douchebags that show them off on the street.

The other difference is that douchebag is always an insult, but various geeks and nerds use the term affectionately amongst themselves.)

After all, the vz.58's Canadian market is, like its American market, a subset of the overall gun market; most people aren't as interested in a "weird Czech thing that nobody else ever built and isn't compatible with anything else".

The "gun nerd" is, because that's awesome.

(Maybe gun geek would be better, but the same defense applies.

I mean, I know that's me - and that's why I own an AG-42B and am making a semi-replica of an AR-15 prototype with a top cocking handle.

Geeks wear our geekdom with pride. Because it's nothing to be ashamed of.)

Awwwwk – whistle, AK47, AK47, AK47 awwwwk – Polly wanna gun ban Awwwk – AK 47, automatic Awwwk – assault weapon Awwwk Polly wanna gun ban.

The ignorance of firearms and Canada’s firearms culture is quite comical when you read these crime reports in the MSM, they regurgitate the only thing they ever learned about gun tech from the anti-gun NGO talking points – AK47 – automatic – Baaaaaad. Like trained parrots their squawking never approximates human intelligence.

The more the media picks on AK's or clones the more people want them.

The few national attention occurrences with the Mini 14 in Canada, US & Australia have only bolstered Rugers sales to records, all for a pretty mediocre gun.

The Arab guy in the "Montreal Massacre" would have caused far more damage had he been walking around with a pump action 12 gauge and a coat full of 00 buck. Even more so with a few gallons of gasoline and some matches.

Yeah...according to reports the Bain guy's powerful thunderstick jammed after about 2-3 rounds....

Personally I would opt for a SKS rather than the CZ.

I wouldn't say there was a "need" to call gunowners nerds. I'd call a "delightful opportunity".
