The CBC may be reimagined...

You might be a Liberal if you mindlessly send this form letter in without editing it.

I am writing in support of privatizing the CBC.

I note that tens thousands of Canadians have spoken out against continued public funding to the CBC; thousands also contributed and ranked ideas to end public funding of media at http://www.smalldeadanimals.com/. The top priorities for our public media that emerged from this consultation are: biased reporting, re-runs of the Simpsons, and a public watchdog over anything conservative.

The license renewal process provides an opportunity to look broadly at the unnecessary role the CBC plays in our media system and our democracy. I believe the CRTC, with the support of Canadians, can and must disable the CBC from continuing to excel in wasting taxpayers money. In setting policy and conditions of licence, I urge you to focus on the objectives of forcing the CBC to carry it's own weight and produce fair & balanced programing that people will actually want to watch.

I’m pleased to participate in this public process about the CBC. Smalldeadanimals (SDA) models the kind of open and participatory public engagement that can be used in the future to determine the direction of the CBC. I trust that you will take Canadian views seriously during this hearing, and thank you for your kind attention.

Thanks DanT for a great morning smile. Poking a finger in the eye of the Liberal/NDP media arm is a good way to start the day.

It would be good to campare the audience numbers.

Seems though that this is a big secret, so people can live pleasant ignorance.

"I am re-imagining the CBC without public funding and I am liking what I see"

And then, when you submit the form, they come back and ask you for a donation. If nothing else, they've got brass balls.

I am writing in support of strong and vibrant private media for the 21st century. It is illogical that private companies have to compete with an over $1B subsidy to the CBC who are then still allowed to charge for commercials.

If you did an analysis of CBC stories and news, you would find a severe leftist slant to the coverage. While Canada and PM Stephen Harper are being lauded on the world stage, the CBC does not report those items with pride.

The CBC also continues to act as if anthropogenic global warming is a threat and wind farms and solar are not complete wastes of taxpayer subsidies, contrary to all evidence this far.

The CBC fails to represent mass quantities of the population, who are conservative in nature, and want evidence of tax dollars being well spent. Please defund the CBC and let them compete on their own merits.

I am writing in support of strong and vibrant public media for the 21st century.

I note that tens thousands of Canadians have spoken up for funding cuts to the CBC.

The license renewal process provides an opportunity to look broadly at the unnecessary role the CBC plays in our media system and our democracy. I believe the CRTC, with the support of Canadians, can and must force the CBC to compete for their income with the rest of the media industry. In setting policy and conditions of licence, I urge you to focus on the objective of providing content that Canadians want. Trying to differentiate the CBC from the private sector offerings is a foolish endeavor, resulting in programming most Canadians aren't interested in watching. Forcing all taxpayers to fund programming that is only consumed by a very small number of citizens is wasteful and unfair.

I’m pleased to participate in this public process about the CBC. I trust that you will take Canadian views seriously during this hearing, and thank you for your kind attention.

I am writing in support of closing the CBC for all time.

I note that tens thousands of Canadians have spoken out against funding the CBC; thousands also contributed and ranked ideas to strengthen the government's resolve to shutter the CBC.

The license renewal process provides an opportunity to look broadly at the necessity of even having the CBC in our media system and our democracy. I believe the CRTC, with the support of Canadians, can and must enable the CBC to either go private or go out of business. In setting policy and conditions of licence, I urge you to focus on the objectives of saving the taxpayers a billion and a half dollars a year, and reduce the amount of propaganda we have inflicted upon us in this country.

I’m pleased to participate in this public process about the CBC. I trust that you will take Canadian views seriously during this hearing, and close the CBC.

Wonder how mother corp will keep it's head above water without HNIC?

I am writing in support of strong and vibrant private media for the 21st century.

I note that tens thousands of Canadians have spoken out in support of funding cuts to the CBC; thousands also contributed and ranked ideas to diminish the future of public media at http://reimaginecbc.ca. The top priorities for our public media that emerged from this consultation are: ill-informed and out of depth reporting, biased conservative bashing content, and a "public" watchdog by leftwing interests.

The license renewal process provides an opportunity to look broadly at the unnecessary role the CBC plays in our media system and our democracy. I believe the CRTC, with the support of leftwing Canadians, can and does enable the CBC to perpetuate in that role. In setting policy and conditions of licence, I urge you to focus on the objectives of supporting an informed citizenry through courageous, in-depth reporting from a Canadian perspective that provides content that the public sector does not.

I am pleased to participate in this public process about the CBC. The ReimagineCBC.ca project models the opposition to open and participatory public engagement that has always been used to determine the direction of the CBC. I trust that you will take Canadian views seriously during this hearing, and advocate for the elimination of all public funding for the CBC, and thank you for your kind attention.

easy Joseph, they'll pass the budget shortfall on to the taxpayers.

Joseph:
Good question.
They could always give Don Cherry his own show.
Better yet, give him his own show after privatising the Mother Corpse.

"... The CBC in the past 20 years has moved into a position of "advocacy" -- political advocacy. Whether covering domestic policy or foreign events the CBC always has a predictable line on every topic.

I can no longer watch The National, I can no longer listen to The Hill or As it Happens on CBC radio, and CBC Radio 2 is now largely unentertaining.

It is time to take the pruning shears to the whole concept of State Broadcaster in Canada.

It saddens me to write the above because from 1968 to 1974 I was an energetic, open-minded CBC Public Affairs radio and TV producer. I pioneered live 6:00 - 9:00 AM and 4:00 - 6:00 PM radio radio programing in Ottawa and never dreamt the day would come when I would regret have been part of this organization.

Today's CBC seems intent on "social engineering" -recasting the Nation in some Poltically Correct construct that has more to do with Hope than with Reality.

I appreciate that the CBC is seeking to replace an aging audience with younger souls, however I am not convinced that that strategy is effective. Relying on the CBC is an acquired habit/taste ... I grew up in a home that only listened to the CBC. I'm not sure that pitching to youth and dumbing down material, or only taking PC positions will deliver the desired ratings..."

MM

Also should add that rather than "edit" the form letter to indicate CBC be cut off, suggest that the licence be restricted to broadcasting only content that is not already serviced by private broadcasters.
That would keep them off cable, sports channels, all news, anything that has advertising.

i rewrote the silly form letter to conform with the reality of how people actually feel about the mother corpse,

I did so with mixed feelings as I think we should think long and hard about the legitimacy of the CRTC. This group of overpaid underperformers have skated very close to censorship in the past and could use a major defunding and shake-up themselves

what we have here is the expensive out of touch cbc being judged by a panel with the same failings

"The CBC: Shoot it. In the head. It's the kindest thing in the long run. Better than watching it slowly cough out it's last breath in agony."

The problem with your suggestion Joseph is that it would merely place the entire onus of supporting the CBC on the backs of the taxpayer. The CBC would continue to exist but only broadcast mind numbing lefty, elite & PC shows that no one living in the world of reality would ever watch, but they'll certainly be paying for. The only answer is to privatize the CBC and make them compete with the private broadcasters for both financing and market.

Doesn't take much to change it - this is my submission:
I am writing in support of strong and vibrant media sector for the 21st century - unfortunately that probably should not include CBC.

CBC is a group of partisan hacks who would not know a balanced report if it came up and hit them in the face.

The license renewal process provides an opportunity to look broadly at the role the CBC plays in our media system and our democracy.

I believe the CRTC, with the support of the millions of Canadians who NEVER watch of listen to CBC must demand that CBC present balanced reports on current affairs - or maybe even better, just report the facts (if they know that those actually are). For too long, the CBC has been reporting on issues only from one perspective. Time for the CRTC to stop that and demand the CBC present ALL sides of issues (even ones they don't agree with, although no PUBLIC broadcaster should be taking sides period!)

There is NOTHING that CBC provides that the private sector does not.

I’m pleased to participate in this public process about the CBC. Unfortunately the ReimagineCBC.ca project does not model the kind of open and participatory public engagement that can be used in the future to determine the direction of the CBC since it appears to be driven mainly by CBC employees and retirees.

I trust that you will take Canadian views seriously during this hearing, and thank you for your kind attention.

All this seems like a preemptive filter to keep negative commentary away from the CRTC.

If you want this leftist workfare project and propaganda machine dismantled, I suggest you comment directly to the CRTC chair responsible for their licence renewal.

Better yet, submit a comment directly to the CRTC licencing hearing via an E-form by clicking this link

This automated form is fairly self directed - Select the "agree" button, check off all the CBC applications, Identify the comment as "In opposition" to the renewal and then blast em in the comment box.

Do it soon because deadline for all comments and interventions is Oct. 5

I shamelessly cut-and-pasted from a number of the replies posted above and I won't ask for a donation:) Thanks for pointing this out. That was fun!

yeah I sent them a nice note, supporting a CBC - without subsidies... ;)

I would not use this CBC form as I suspect they filter the commentary going to the CRTC. Use the form on the CRTC site to submit directly to the committee. I tried to post the link but this damn spam filter will not accept an HTML hot link.
try this

Oh - and hurry up - you have till Oct. 5 to file opposing commentary.

You had noticed to reload the letter from the original posted link runs thru cwa-union.org -- Communications Workers of America -- funny an American Union fighting for retaining CBC workers.

If you did an analysis of CBC stories and news, you would find a severe leftist slant

Analysis? I believe a cursory glance would suffice. ;-)

Awesome! I am a very peaceful person but I absolutely despise the CBC. Its publically-funded existence abhors me. De-fund it, now.

I am writing in support of strong and vibrant public media for Canada in the 21st century.

To achieve this, it will be necessary to remove all tax-payer funding from the CBC.

I’m pleased to participate in this public process, etc.....

Ahh... form letters. I wonder what "ok" wrote?

I wrote
I dont so much want to re-imagine the CBC, as that I want to remember the CBC. It is something I view as a 20th century idea, and belongs therein.

Those who enjoyed the CBC can look back with fond memories, and marvel at how the world has changed since that financial model was popular. Those who dont enjoy the programming, or never experienced it, can take comfort in knowing their tax dollars are not being funneled into an unknown.

I trust that you will take Canadian views seriously during this hearing, and thank you for your kind attention.

Re: " ...urge you to focus on the objectives of supporting an informed citizenry through courageous, in-depth reporting .."

I guess that rules out the CBC.

Revised and sent.

I was for many years a "Friend of Canadian Broadcasting",which is a lobby organization, not for "Canadian Broadcasting", but for the CBC, Chaired by Ian Morrison.

For years I editted the form letters they sent me to change my message to a more "conservative" aspect. After a while I guess they read one of my letters,as I was promptly dropped from "Friends" and have never received an E-mail from them since.

Now,I have no "friends" at CBC, SOB! And I'd bet James Moore wouldn't like me much either!

I have no problem with a government-owned broadcaster, BUT it should be run like any other business, and be self-supporting. There should also be an oversight committee to ensure that the reporting is unbiased.

But with the current crowd in charge at CBC, we are going to continue to be subjected to left-wing propaganda at OUR expense.

Privatize the bloody Liberal propaganda organization!

I sent my "adapted" version. Supplied the following name, far away postal code and email:

Not Telling, XOC 0B0, iamonalist@some_bureacracy.gc.ca

It went through!

I can imagine the CBC as it was back in 1944 when it actually served the Canadian people. I haven't watched or listened to it (or any other TV or radio station) in the past 25 years. My MP3 player serves me fine these days and has the advantage that I don't have endless blathering interfering with my enjoyment of the music.

JUST BEWARE that form letter is routed thru

cwa-union.org

WHICH is the Communications Workers of America -- a very big American union and they may filter out the e-mails even if you change the form letter.

IT IS RECOMMENDED TO WRITE to the CRTC directly.

So much for Canadian content they are protecting!! LoL -- Hypocrites!!!!

were's the "shut er down" form letter:-))))

I am writing in support of strong and vibrant public media for the 21st century without a government funded competitor to private enterprise.

I see no reason for the CBC to exist. No free country needs a government broadcaster which is usually the sign of a dictatorship such as the former USSR, and contemporary Cuba, North Korea and countless banana republics.

Please do not renew the licence for these socialist ideologues who seek to impose their political views upon the public while spending precious tax dollars.

I'm afraid they will just count the replies and not read them and then tell the CRTC they have great support based on numbers. I once did a re-edit of a David Suzuki letter and got e-mails thanking me for my support - which I definitely did not offer. Best to go directly to the CRTC.

I am writing in support of strong and vibrant public media for the 21st century.

I support the funding cuts to a blatantly biased CBC and the outdated big government approach to broadcasting.

The top priorities for our govt funded media should be:
end of public subsidies
end of special treatment regarding censorship
end of govt money for left wing political agendas

The license renewal process provides an opportunity to look broadly at the totally unnecessary role the CBC plays in our media system and our democracy.

I believe the CRTC, with the support of Canadians, should end government funding and government special deals for a network that should have been weaned from public financing years ago.

I’m pleased to participate in this public process about the CBC.

The ReimagineCBC.ca project is a model of the kind of push poll manipulation which the public purse should not support.

Revised and sent this:

"If the CBC can not compete in a free market then please let them go . At over a billion dollars a year to operate, this bloated cow should be put to pasture."

I like the "kiss program".

One of the groups behind "Reimagine CBC" is Leadnow - the same group behind the Robocalls email complaint campaign

My edit:

The CBC is an anachronism in our media-saturated culture. It no longer serves any legitimate purpose. The tax dollars that support it are an epic misallocation of resources – there are far higher priority concerns. Its subsidy is anticompetitive, actively harming private enterprise and the wealth generation that government relies on for revenues. It should be abolished.

How do you know your edits get sent? you can edit the web page message but those edits may not get captured and sent.

"I am writing in support of strong and vibrant public media for the 21st century. The best way to insure this goal is to leave the field of broadcasting free of interference from the CBC, which is nothing but a publicly-funded liberal propaganda operation that has historically demonstrated nothing but disdain for any political views other than the liberals, socialists and anti-Canadian separatists who populate it. I therefore urge the federal government of Canada to deny the CBC any license to broadcast and to assign the CBC's annual budget allotment to general revenues from this moment forward."

My comment:

I am writing today to request that the CBC be cut free to sink or swim (financially) on their own.

I am of the opinion that the CBC is little more than a statist echo chamber, a tax funded advocacy group for public sector unions and ivory tower elitists.

Once upon a time, a national broadcaster made sense but in today's world, we are global citizens, with little need for the "grand tribal narrative" that a public broadcaster tries to indoctrinate us into.

De-fund the CBC!

I am writing to recommend that the broadcast license of the CBC be terminated. The original mandate of the CBC was created in the early part of the 20th century to make broadcast media available to all Canadians. At the time, technology and private involvement in broadcasting was severely limited such that there was a real possibility that without a government broadcaster, many Canadians would have no broadcasting service at all to bring them news of national affairs, local programing or a means of receiving information in a time of national emergency.

Those days have passed. Modern wireless, cable and satellite technology make it possible for all regions of the country to receive programming through at least one, and often multiple means. Private broadcasters are well able to meet the needs of the Canadian broadcast consumer market. If there is a sub population that feels it wants a "public" non-commercial broadcaster, then it should be able to fund such a broadcaster by subscription.

It is time to eliminate at least one government department i.e. the CBC.

That was fun.

I do not believe that it is possible to re-imagine something that is not in an individuals mind. Imagination is personal property and is one of the few things that gument does not tax. CBC is proving once again that it is a childish, bureaucratic, agenda driven outfit without direction: it is like a cancer on society - always growing, always demanding attention, never good.

Like you give a hoot. You still get your public money no matter what socialist dreck you broadcast!
No lies or misinformation will stop the flow of money. So why the sham concern?

From the form letter: "I am writing in support of strong and vibrant public media for the 21st century."

So, CBC, why aren't you providing this "strong and vibrant public media" with all the public monies you've been receiving for so many years? You seem to think that keeping the lifeline to government-provided funding -- that's money taken from every Canadian family whether they watch your programs or not, and most don't -- is going to revitalize your sagging market share.

Fawgettaboutit. You've had your chance. You've failed. Move on, quite probably fold, and leave Canadians alone. You have no one to blame but yourselves, seeing as you don't represent the values of most Canadians. You like to think you're in the vanguard but you're not. You're washed up and it's way past time you stopped imagining yourself -- let alone re-imagining yourself -- as a broadcaster with "a clear mandate to be [Canadians'] public media through open and participatory processes, in-depth and informed reporting, and uniquely Canadian content that holds powerful interests accountable."

Having already flogged that mandate to death, it's become increasingly clear that Canadians don't consider you to be their public media. You haven't been and we don't want you to be.

So, put a sock in it, CBC, and stop using our money to support, revitalize, and re-imagine yourself. That's your job and you've blown it.
