“By the way, those dependent people he refers to, those 47 percent, they include the 650,000 troops still left in Afghanistan who, because they are in combat, being shot at, injured, they do not have to pay any federal income tax on their salary,” Biden said during a campaign stop in Concord, N.H. “I don’t call that dependency. I call that ingratitude to not recognize they are a part of that 47 percent.”

What is Biden, assassination insurance? It's a cruel way to exploit the senile.
Those troops are most likely to vote for Romney, so wtf is his point other than more bullsh#t ?
So he fudged a number. That's not actually as bad as saying that he isn't worried about that 47%. Or not even mentioning the military in a speech where you accept the nomination, when your whole platform is about how great you are at sucking the military's you know what. But hey... by all means... let this be a reason for not voting Democrat and going with the party that has royally screwed the American people more than any other in the past 70 years.
Black Mamba,too funny.
Joe does have a way with words. He is the 'funny uncle' that makes family reunions memorable.
650,000 troops in Afghanistan! No wonder the USA is going broke!
Any doctors on here who can confirm if Joe Biden is suffering the early stages of dementia?
He may very well be,or if rumors of his boozing are true, may be a "wethead", but something about the guy suggest he "ain't right in the head".
Excuse me if I.m wrong but hasn't Obama made it all but impossible for the military to vote?
Why? Because he knows the military despises him.
This is just another political road of lies, with no exit. Misdirection of what Romney said, while the real persecutor of the forces is covered again. Kill two birds with one lie.
Biden is an embarrassment. Obama wanted a fool at his side so the he would look better. That's why he chose Biden.
Weak, calculating men choose fools like Biden.
Between Reid, Pelosi, Biden and Obama, the Democratic Party is a laughing stock, and *still* people will vote for them.
To see Biden's latest gaffe, go to today's Reader's
Tips and read my comment.
but something about the guy suggest he "ain't right in the head".- dmorris at September 22, 2012 3:08 PM
Yea! that something is his mouth. The guy is from the shallow end of the gene pool.
That's about half a million people in a population of what, 330 million?
Let's see. In 2004, there were 131,113,969 tax returns filed. That's considerably more than Biden's half million.
The top 1% of these paid 40% of taxes collected.
The top 25% paid 86%. So, 25% of that 131 million paid 86% of the taxes.
Then, of this same set of those who filed, 43% paid no income taxes.
And outside of this set, those who didn't file taxes, were another 15 million who didn't earn enough to file. So, about 58 million households were outside of the income tax revenue take.
What Romney is looking at, is not this half million in the military who wouldn't even file, but the 43% who did file and who paid no taxes.
Income tax for any public servant is merely a clawback as they are all funded by the taxpayer anyway. I guess the U.S. Military just gets to keep what shows up on the paycheck. It's still a job that the majority of people would not wish to do, despite the odd display of bravado by some.
We all know that Romney was talking about people who 'take' but provide or produce nothing in return.
The media could have such fun with Biden were he a Republican. Even Obama periodically shows touches of stupid which transcends his incompetence.
My favourite classic gaffe was when Jean Chretien said his ethnic Filipino cabinet minister looked like a Chinaman. The media didn't even touch it. Apparently Chinaman is only considered a racist term if spoken by a conservative.
Hmmm. Callousness and vacuity at the same time: "Desperation, thy name is Obama/Biden..."
Aside from the order of magnitude gaffe in Joe's comments, and all that implies, a couple of other things pop to mind. There's the obvious initial question of why the troops are being singled-out in this debate at all: in a move that will undoubtedly backfire bigtime, Joe's just insulted both the troops and everyone who does pay federal taxes: both groups will ask, "What, we don't pull our fair share of the weight?" But, maybe's he just as rhetorically stupid as he is innumerate.
And speaking of his latter deficiency, the other question concerns another (smaller) matter of arithmetic interest. Population statistics are frequently rounded up or down for convenience of conceptual understanding, memory, communication, etc. What's the likelihood that Mitt's real number is actually 47%? Pretty small, I'd say. More likely, it's somewhere between 46.5% and 47.5%, or in a range of 144.15 million to 147.25 million (based on an American population total of 310 million, say). The difference between high and low is 3.1 million. The total personnel of the Armed Forces of the United States, or just the 650,000 number Joe fubbed or just the 68,000 number, could be fit into this range with ease. That means that the force serving in Afghanistan might be included in Mitt Romney's definition of "47 percent", or it might not.
So, Joe doesn't know -- he's just assumed it. So what's worse? Anything Mitt Romney's said, or the spectacle on display of the systematic sloppiness of the Vice-President of the United States (one heartbeat away, you know...). It would probably be helpful to Obama/Biden if the mendacity they are intent on spreading at least made some superficial sense.
Like Brian M. says above.
The gaffe is not so much about the number, but that Joe lumps the troops in with those who are merely occupying space at public expense.
wallyj - wel that, and the fact that the man who is, as they say, a heartbeat away from the Presidency overestimates the number of troops in Afghanistan by about 900%.
Of course, El Presidente claims not to be able to ballpark the National Debt to within a few trillion. I guess these things are minor details.
BTW, remember when Sarah Palin said she could see Russia from her house? Oh wait, that was Tina Fey. Still, though, what a big dummy stupid-head she was.
As others have noted, it isn't merely that Biden has added a zero to the actual number of troops in combat in Aghanistan (68,000 vs 650,000) but that he lumps this small set in with the 47 million who pay no federal taxes.
There'll be a lot of this in the debates, and neither Romney nor Ryan can afford to move into a debate that merely rebuts Obama and Biden for their gross errors. I even think that the Obama and Biden team will encourage these mistatements to set up an image of 'no, no' of the GOP.
There are 2 issues here. One is the gaffe of 650,000 troops left in Afghanistan but the more important issue is how Biden’s statement distorts Romney’s message even if Biden had stated the correct number of troops.
Biden is saying that Romney was disrespectful of people he referenced in the 47% as being a “dependency” group. That’s not true. The point Romney was trying to make had to do with (roughly quoting here) “the 47% who don’t pay Federal income taxes are not going to be interested in our offering a tax cut.” That is one scary fact Romney was telling his audience and that is why this election is so critical. The USA is close to reaching a tipping point of a majority concluding that it is “other people’s money” carrying the Federal fiscal load.
Thankfully we don’t have that problem in Canada because almost everyone has skin in the game when it comes to funding Ottawa. That’s primarily because we have a consumption tax, the HST. Thus taxes matter to everyone here.
Biden just called the troops lazy welfare recipients that don't earn their money and take handouts from the government.
Someone should market “I’m a 47%’er” T-shirts, the left would love em and the government would by them from you for them, double your MSRP.
No Fair! Canadian soldiers have to pay income tax when they are in combat.
The word on the street is the DNC commissar wanted to underbus the gaffe prone VP at the convention but even Hillary didn't want to be part of the BO disaster in November, So with no VP takers and Biden having spent a full career in Dem partisan politics he knows where all the skeletons are buried - so on he strides both feet firmly planted in his yap.
It is truly scary to see the ineptitude and low quality of leadership at the levers of a global nuclear super power.
Curious how the latest poll (at Drudge) shows 46% support for Obama.
So, as Romney said, 47% would support Obama no matter what seems to be factually correct.

In the interest of being truthful, is that what Biden really said?
set you free >
"In the interest of being truthful, is that what Biden really said?"
In the interest of those who rode the short school bus, yea he said it; every bit as much as he claims Romney said it. Hmmmm.
Obama is NOT trying to stop the military from voting. Don't be silly:
http://factcheck.org/2012/08/obama-not-trying-to-curb-military-early-voting/
HOWEVER, Republicans have been trying to surpress votes from groups who tend to vote Democrat on the premise that there is widespread voter fraud, when in fact there are very, very few cases.
http://www.brennancenter.org/content/resource/policy_brief_on_the_truth_about_voter_fraud/
Basically, if you want to steal an election, it's very, very, VERY hard to do it one vote at a time, though some sort of mass conspiracy.
However, if you wish to steal an election by making it hard for up to 10% of the voting population to vote, you call for all sorts of crazy laws about ID that nobody ever used to care about.
John - explain to me again why black and legally-resident Hispanic people cannot get photo ID.
John >
"you call for all sorts of crazy laws about ID that nobody ever used to care about."
ID is required to cash a check, collect welfare, or even hold a bank account among other sensible things that helps put food in the mouth.
If you don’t have the intelligence to have ID for basic day to day survival in today’s society, why should anyone care if you can vote on theirs?
It’s a very simple concept that people voting in a democratic election prove that they have the “right” to vote.
Hey did you know that there is a wide open border with Mexico that brings in drugs, violent criminals, and millions of other foreign people not legal to vote in an American election? How can you stop them from voting if you don’t check ID?
Rick @ 3:27 - read it and just about wet myself. Did you know that the President has a "big stick"?? Joe says he does. Must have seen it.
John - the Dems are going to have a tough time getting the vote out in the 2008 numbers.
Their voting slogan this time 'round is " Vote Early - Vote Often!" Dems seem to have no problem with voter fraud mainly because they perpetrate it and benefit from it.
Posted by: John at September 22, 2012 6:38 PM
Are you really this naive, or just high?
Poor ol' leftards: you need photo ID to fly on a plane, to check into a hotel room, to buy booze, even to attend the recent Kleptocrat/Maobama love-in, but it's repressive to demand legal ID to ensure illegals or others don't vote fraudulently?
Rub (2) functioning brain cells together, Einstein, and ask yourself if the wide swath of illegals whom the dems would like to see vote, as well as the other avenues of voter fraud, would largely vote Republican, if you'd see the obama/holder team fighting voter ID laws?
It's incredible how the left who hold themselves in such high intellectual esteem turn out to be pretty bone-headed in the end. It's guaranteed, every time.
mhb23re
John is on another planet....not properly briefed. But then he rejects that voter fraud exists...or that "po folk" have photo ID if'n they're legal.
Blue states have a nasty habit of delaying mailing the absentee ballots to serving military until it is too late to get them back to be counted. In Minnesota when Franken "won" the recount absentee military votes were excluded regardless of time of return.
During the Viet Nam adventure, ballots were repatriated by MAC (Military Air Command) and mailed in the US....the Dems got them excluded as a voting irregularity. The intended transport was by ship.......
Nothing new here at all.
"I call that ingratitude to not recognize they are a part of that 47 percent.”
~Vice President Joe Biden
Ingratitude is sending troops to the other side of the world to serve and die without allowing them to win the War on Terror.
The states with voter id laws have offered FREE photo ids. The deal is that illegals vote. Republicans want to put a stop to illegals voting and the democrats are pissed because illegals are a big voting block for them.
john, go chew on an ACORN
Oh John,
You have no clue with regard to getting a legal ID do you. Back when I was in collage and didn't have a car I got myself a State ID. It was very easy. Also note that the states that require a legal ID offer one for FREE if you apply.
So this vast unfair bar that is in the way of the po disadvantaged folk is simply that they need to get to an office that dispenses ID's, fill in the paper work, provide proof of legal residence or citizenship. Oh and in most of these states you can get free transport to the office to register as well.
WOW! That is an amazingly difficult bar to jump over to vote.
Romney may well be as dumb as 'bama.
The Republicans may well be as cowardly, servile and bereft of solutions as the Democrats.
But none of that matters - here's the scene that is really being played out among the left:
Once upon a time there was a little altarperson (how's that for neutrality?)who was enduring long-term sexual abuse by his clergyperson (I'm on a PC roll!).
He complained about the abuse to his friend, who told him, "There's a new place of worship (3rd PC comment!) opening up two streets over, why don't you move there?"
"I don't know if I want to" said the altarperson, "I've seen the new guy, and I don't like the look of him!"
