I'm not convinced. Plenty of judges are lenient towards common criminals, while plenty of "white collar criminals" did or are doing jail time. Think Enron, Michael Milken, etc.

LG quotes Taibbi: "'The Republicans (are) going with this goofy story ... that the financial crisis was caused by lazy poor people living in too much house ... a lot of whining about the Community Reinvestment Act of 1977 and Fannie and Freddie, with social engineering being the dog-whistle code words describing government aid to minorities ...'"

This is not a "goofy story", it's an accurate description of what happened (with the exception of "lazy"). And we know that former Senator Obama was in the thick of it.

LG: "While Taibbi writes from a left-wing perspective ... he never pulls his punches when it comes to Obama and the Democrats."

Yes, he writes from a lunatic fringe leftist perspective, and the preceding quote is proof enough. If anything, he'd like the Democrats to lurch even further into Marxism.

I usually read Lorrie Goldstein's columns, particularly those on the environment, in which he knowledgeably skewers AGW. But while he's no socialist (so far as I know), he sometimes gives too much credence to "the other side", like Occupy last year or Taibbi now. The leftists may occasionally make good points, but they interpret them wrongly and in most cases want to push us in the wrong direction.

I'm not sure what's going on over at the National Post: they've usually been much more reliable than the Obama cheerleading squad over at the Toronto Star, at least in the past. In addition to the poll you mention, which is not in the Real Clear Politics rolling average (which usually means methodological problems), have a look at this tater:

Nice headline, picking up on one five-word heckle from one person -- one person after the spectacle of the media 500 club, or whatever it's called, shilling for Obama for two days? Romney's comments as quoted do not appear to me to a softening of his position on the chaos in Obama's ME policy -- more a statement of condolence.

In addition to that, Rasmussen 3-day track has moved eight points in Romney's favour in the last four days, while Gallup's 7-day track has moved moved two points to Romney in the past two days (the latter would still have, in theory, five days worth of "convention bounce" in it in).

Notice the difference? The Charlie Cook piece has the same sort of tone as the National Post article I indicated above: "Oh well, everybody knows that Obama has the advantage..." Then he says that the race is tight and Romney could still win, at which point he moves on to Congress. That's it? That's your rationale?

Dick Morris's article eschews the halo-effect love-in nonsense in favour of some, you know, background and analysis based on his knowledge and experience with the subject of polling analysis. Not quite the same story, is it?

I would concede you one point, however -- Karl Rove noted in his SuperPac presentation last week that, based on his research, ad hominen attacks against Obama are not persuasive to voters available to the GOP. I think that Romney needs to be careful on this point -- just stick to the facts and the economy, and be clear on a reasonable package of health care reforms.
