"Beer and coffee. And hospitality. Will the depravities never end? No wonder Ms Brady feels morally soiled."

I commented on a article by Conrad Black, that the typical lefty is so programmed to outrage, that someone could give them a 1 kilo brick of gold, and they'd whine about the color.

Don't know why but that article reminded me of the British comedy bit, Frog a la Peche.

She can cleanse herself by giving the money back.

Interesting that she didn't figure all these things out before she accepted the cash.

And by her metrics how many award sponsors would be acceptable?

Hell, even welfare cheques would be soiled because they are funded by taxing the profits of "gasp" breweries, coal mines, cigarette companies and multi nationals.

Well if you want moral excellence and Bavarian purity laws I can commend you to:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andechs_Abbey

The Benedictine abbey of Andechs is a place of pilgrimage on a hill east of the Ammersee in the Landkreis of Starnberg (Upper Bavaria) in Germany, in the municipality Andechs. Andechs Abbey is famed for its flamboyant Baroque church (1712) and its brewery. Composer Carl Orff is buried in the church.

Bring along your copy of Dickens "Oliver" and bathe your soul in beer and prayer. After confession donate your large sums of filthy lucre to a worthy cause: bread, cheese and beer...!

Other than that I believe Ms Brady is a crank.

Morally soiled?

We can arrange for her to get some head diapers if that would help her cope.

Will morons never cease?

Really real righteous writers write their brilliant prose and leave it under a rock for no one to see, lest it be soiled by demand for their words.

Yup, that's what i done - and the government should pay me for it!

Let them run free. Unsupported working without a net like the rest of the working class that pay their freight. Let them follow a crow's ass from dumpster to dumpster for their next meal. Parasites....

"She can cleanse herself by giving the money back" Gord Tulk @ 11.28 am, seriously the easiest way to redemption ever.

Were her debts to "corporations"? She could have saved herself the journey through the moral sewers by repudiating the debt and refusing the financial aspect of the prize. Or donated it. Righteousness is so confusing these days.

Here's my comment in The Guardian...

"A commercial enterprize gets its money by voluntarily exchanging value for value. Government, on the other hand, appropriates your money whether you like it or not, obviously the morally superior way to fund an award."

I recall reading once upon a time a comparison between the Modern Left and the Cromwell era Puritans.

Virtually identical absent the Free Love part.

Speaking of coffee and commerce, a share of the coffee shop "The Second Cup" SCU on the TSX can be had for about 7 dollars and it has paid a reliable 8 percent dividend for years. Profit from your habit.

What's even more laughable is her belief that publishing is free of politics, economics or just plain flavour of the month. And let's not forget that old favourite - who do you know? And what connections do you have to media?
Apparently she felt her victory was due to just plain literary brilliance.

A footnote: in Canada we have a much more coherent system based on gender, ethnic background and CBC connections. It saves people like me from wasting a lot of time. (Yes, I'm bitter.)

Re: Second Cup,

I was intrigued until I saw they switched from monthly to quarterly dividends. I love monthly.

Any company that gives up beer brewing for bland yuppy cafes certainly should not be trusted ;-)
