Media Bias in America

UCLA Political Science & Economics Professor Tim Groseclose has just authored a new video from Prager University about media bias:

You can take the Political Quotient quiz he speaks of here. Its emphasis is clearly on U.S. politics but Canadians should be able to tackle most questions just as easily.

  1. Revenue that the MSM collects from me in a year: $0.
I do not own a television. I do not buy newspapers or magazines. My commuting bicycle does not have a radio.
Why? Because I am trying to do my part to starve the bastards out of existence before they can starve me out of mine.

  2. Just finished the survey. 16- I’m in the same league as Gingrich, McCain and others of similar ilk. Makes me proud.

  3. Every single one of those bills hands control of some form of business decision to government. One gave Judges the power to modify interest rates on mortgages, do we REALLY want to give government all this power? I’m baffled sometimes at how easily people are seduced into thinking that government is the only way to solve inequity.

  4. 6.5 for what it is worth.
My over riding concern was that the economy cannot afford much of the spending associated with these bills. Also it increases the role of government in personal responsibilities of the citizens.

  5. Same as Ken.
I’m a 3 also, and standing just to the right of that babe Michel Bachman.
Taking that test was eye-opening as to the amount of big gubmint legislation and destruction of their freedoms they’ve imposed upon themselves.
They’re “all in” on socialism now.
Canada looks pretty good in comparison.

  6. My PQ aligned me with that skank Gingrich. Yhe sad thing about voting on most of these bills was that the bills should never hav been tabled. Most of the intent of the bills is to act in areas which is none of government’s business.

  7. I must be a flaming liberal. I scored 28.5 which still groups me with Gingrich, Nixon and McCain. You would have to be well left of Libby Davies to vote for most of those bills.

  8. 5.4 for me. My only “lefty” vote was for 4 weeks of maternity pay when a new child is born or adopted in the family.

  9. I scored a 3, which puts me to the right of Michelle Bachmann and surprisingly far to the right of Richard Nixon.
I wonder where the Gipper would fall on the scale.

  10. Since their “political quotient” is undefined, the result is meaningless.
I’d be interested in seeing the algorithm behind the curtain, though.

  11. Well…I was of the impression I was slightly to the right of Attilla the Hun….4.2 which puts me to the left of Michella Bachman…..
    Oh well….

  12. PQ Survey Results -Here’s your PQ: 3
    Politicians with similar PQs are:
    Michele Bachmann (R-Minn, 2007-09) PQ=-4.1
    James DeMint (R-S.C. 1999-2009) PQ=5.1
    Newt Gingrich (R-Ga., 1979-94) PQ=11.4
    Richard Nixon (R-Calif., 1947-52) PQ=12.5

If you check out Groseclose’s web site and do a little research, the PQ is based on the judgment of liberal thinktanks as to what is considered “liberal” or “progressive” vs “conservative”. He does not make that judgment. I believe that the algorithm for calculating the PQ should be documented in his paper. BTW, I’m a real squish at 19.

  14. I’m a tad farther right than I thought. 0.6. That’s Zero point Six. I’ll have to work on that point six.

  15. Here’s your PQ: 5.4
Right in there with Bachman and DeMint.
I would have shot 80% of that crap down. Every bill or resolution was for more Gov’t, more spending or more taxes.
What’s really revealing is there ‘Ain’t No Partisan Politics’ anymore.
    ,

  16. one “lefty” vote and one undecided got me that 6.5
I was surprised to see that not a lot of Republicans oppose leftist bills/acts
they are becoming less and less conservative even if they still call themselves Republicans…

  17. 3. I was disappointed that “I would have clubbed at least one Democrat to death right there in the chamber” wasn’t one of the choices.

  18. Holy crap.I’m a 30.1
I blame that on the time I spend at the cbc website, staring into the abyss.

  19. I started but didn’t even answer the first question about the bill authorizing differential pay scales for men and women.
    BECAUSE:
In my view the government should have nothing whatsoever to do with valid legal employment contracts entered into by employers and employees, EXCEPT to enforce them. It should be silent on the content of legal contracts.
To NOT support the bill could mean, either:
    a) you’re not in favour of differential wages, or
    b) you’re in favour of differential wages but not the proving criteria laid down in the bill.
Alarmingly, I’m not mellowing: I’m more of an anarchist today than I was 10 years ago.
I’m not even ON that scale!

  20. The PQ scores (and consequently the survey as well) are meaningless. The survey is not different than the sex quizzes in women’s magazines (e.g., Cosmopolitan). They are sometimes fun to take but the answers are relative to someone’s concepts of what defines sexy or in the case of this survey “conservative”, “liberal”, etc.

  21. Somehow I managed to score 4.1 and I don’t consider myself a Conservative. Seems that all one needs to do to get a low PQ is to be opposed to any increase in government spending. There were really no questions that would allow the differentiation of Libertarians from Conservatives.
I’m also interested in the algorithm used to compute the PQ and wonder what validation techniques were utilized for the test. It would be interesting to see how well correlated PQ was with scores on the worlds smallest political quiz which does a good job of identifying Libertarians.

  22. Richard Nixon may have scored 12.5 but he was the clown who banned the private holding of gold and who kissed up to mass murderer Mao Tse-Tung. If “conservatives” foul their nest this badly, what hope is there?
