What was the German government thinking in 2004, when it offered a subsidy, known as a feed-in tariff, that guaranteed investors as much as €0.57 per kilowatt-hour for the next two decades of photovoltaic generation? At the time, the average price for electricity from other sources was about €0.20/kWh; by comparison, the average U.S. electricity price in 2004 was 7.6 cents, or about €0.06/kWh. With subsidies like that, it was no wonder that Bavaria Solarpark was just the beginning of a rush to build photovoltaic plants in Germany. By the end of 2011, Germany’s PV installations had a capacity of nearly 25 gigawatts, which was more than a third of the global total. If you subsidize something enough, at first it can seem almost reasonable; only later does reality intervene. This past March, stung by the news that Germans were paying the second highest electricity rates in Europe, the German parliament voted to cut the various solar subsidies by up to 29 percent.

The only thing I can say:
Only 29?
PV solar is as dirty or perhaps even dirtier than the oil sands. It's not economically feasible to produce PV solar in North America or Europe. The labor costs are prohibitively expensive and environmental regulations which keep our air, water and land from being heavily polluted don't exist in Asia, so nearly all of the PV production is over there where they can pollute and keep their production costs low. The electricity to run their PV solar factories comes from dirty coal and the factories dump pollution into the environment. The same goes for their wind turbines, and everything else they produce.
Oh right, I forgot... Asia is in the peeing end of the pool so it's not a problem, eh?
Germany is waking up to the fact they have blown hundreds of billions $ on inefficiency. Nothing pisses off Germans more than inefficiency.

So the square heads are starting to compute things up? Crazy.
Col Klink lives.
Its time the economically/eco challenged paid for their 'fashionably' foolish stupidity out of their own pockets.
Repeat after me Fritz... left hand thread does not screw into right hand receiver...one more time...ahhh you're starting to understand no?
We may yet get thru this age of stupidity...but don't count on it being clear sailing after that.
They'll find another pet project.
Its a form of mental masturbation!
Ontario Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty must have read the German PLAYBOOK on electrical wind & solar subsidies.
As part of Ontario's Green Energy Act, producers of solar energy receive a guaranteed rate of 80.2 cents/kWh for the electricity they produce.
And while Ontario Electricity rates are the highest in Canada, to their Ontario One Hydro customers, they fall below the guaranteed solar, wind prices being paid.
Talk about stuck on stupid, eh?
Conservative leader Tim Hudak should take the McGuinty Liberals to the woodshed and spank the stupid socialist asses at the polls over electricity pricing lunacy (for starters) , as well as killing the (gaming dollars only supported) Standard bred horse breeding and racing industry in Ontario.
Maybe the Germans have discovered that high electricity costs drive up the cost of production, and cost actually is relevant in competitive export markets. The problems is, a 29% cut means 71% of the subsidy remains.
Right now in BC, water is spilling over dams, water at could be producing inexpensive electricity that could be sold at a nice profit into the Western Grid.
Instead, due to Eco greenie stupidity, BC Hydro is buying expensive power from green sources at an 800 % premium and selling it a huge loss.
Just because some clueless turd headed university profs got into Gordon Campbell's head with a bunch of Glowball Warming nonsense and he changed the provincial energy policy so he could feel Ike a good little greenie.
There is always an opportunity cost to economic activity, especially stupid economic activity.
The tide may be turning here in Bantario. A company wants to erect several turbines in a community near here. They are required to have a townhall meeting with the locals before the project goes ahead. Only problem is they cannot find a venue for it. Seems all the local halls etc: are "fully booked" for the foreseeable future.
Might be time to start sending links to this story to Dalton's work email (and anyone else in Ontario's govt that is involved in this green scam) until his email is full. Do this 3 or 4 times with each new story that comes up as Germany gets further and further away from burying themselves in this scheme. Eventually he might get the messagewhen thousands of people are flooding his email. But then again, he's a socialist moron who thinks he's doing the right thing because he "feels strongly" about it despite reason and logic saying otherwise.
Yesterday, 35 degrees plus humidity. Total electrical use, 23000 or so megawatts. Production from windturbines, 77 megawatts. What a great investment Dalton.
"he's a socialist moron who thinks he's doing the right thing because he "feels strongly" about it despite reason and logic saying otherwise...." - Robert L
That also unfortunately describes the electorate that keeps him there. Until the narratives of the indoctrination that pass for school curricula are replaced with actually teaching basic numeracy and uncorrupted science, nothing will change for the better.
Hudak has surrendered to spin-doctored compromise. He must believe that when it comes to politics, a milkshake mixed with dog shit is still palatable.
Does anyone think it an accident that GM is closing down production lines in Oshawa? Electricity is a large part of the production cost of modern automobiles. By boosting the cost of electricity, McGuinty is shooting his own industrial base.

"joe molnar says... Ontario Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty must have read the German PLAYBOOK on electrical wind & solar subsidies."
ah, but premier mcslippery discovered that paying for pv juice at 6 times the going rate was a mugs game, so he cancelled the fit on anything but roof mounted rigs... typically urban installs... leaving farmers who put in $80,000 ground based systems to eat the loss.
guess who the liberal voter is in the above equation.
