Al-Qaida-linked Mali Islamists armed with guns and pick-axes continued to destroy ancient mausoleums in the famed city of Timbuktu on Sunday, the second day of attacks on the UNESCO heritage sites, witnesses said.The salafist Ansar Dine group backs strict sharia, Islamic law, and considers the shrines of the local Sufi version of Islam to be idolatrous. Sufi shrines have also been attacked by hardline Salafists in Egypt and Libya in the past year.
Residents say the group has threatened to destroy all of the 16 main mausoleum sites in Timbuktu despite the international outcry against the attacks. UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova has called for an immediate halt to the attacks.

I think they should destroy all of their past. Reminding savages that they were once civilized might be more than they can handle. Islam wins the prize. I used to think some fundamentalist Christians were the stupidest people on earth but these guys win hands down.
What happened in Timbuktu already happened in Mecca and Medina over the last few decades. They tore down all the old buildings that the fundamentalists said were too fancy and not Islamic enough.

And once the bastards gain control of Europe, the same will happen to all the great shrines, icons, churches, cathedrals and oratorios of Christendom, up to and including St. Peter's. It's happened a half dozen times in the past, even during the French Revolution (in the name of Rationalism) and the Spanish Civil War and of course the Russian revolution.
It was the Muslims who stripped the Pyramids of their polished limestone casings to humble the infidel Egyptians in the first place. Whatever they do will just be a continuation of the destruction that has been going on for a long time.

kelly - Without trying to judge you, or in any way violate your safe space, I feel that the approach you suggest is rather negative. We must not simply impose our hegemonic values on people who are expressing themselves in a manner which is meaningful to them in their cultural context.
