Why this blog?
Until this moment I have been forced to listen while media and politicians alike have told me "what Canadians think". In all that time they never once asked.
This is just the voice of an ordinary Canadian yelling back at the radio -
"You don't speak for me."

From what I see available in my interests section of ebay, folks are cleaning out their basements and selling what they can, not selling because they’ve upgraded.
It’s mostly distressing. I tend to talk with the retailers that I transact with and it’s not good. Sure it’s all about folks I know of, but it’s exactly what the Zerohedge folks have been showing in charts for some time now, the chickens are coming home to roost, as some politician / preacher might have said.
Probably tie in nicely with next month’s Baltic Dry Index. More confirmation upon more flatlining indices…
Look at the cost of everything including your wage and investments divide by 2. That is where this will settle out.
Don’t write some long response on how this or that is wrong about that statement. This is my guess just a gut feeling.
It could be better or worse but you will be able to see it from there.
Around here the stores are filled with Canadians. I like to say “Canadians actually drill their oil.”
We are making a choice this election, that is for sure.
Ford,
I sort of disagree with you. Once we start drilling our oil, I think the debt, though scandalous, will be manageable. Positive balance of trade, lower gas prices, people working again. It can still happen.
Tim,
There is a legitimate resource strategy that the U.S. can follow. A one time boost in relaxation of rules and regulations to enable drilling and exploration. The government needs to properly extract its fees and taxes but these need to be used to correct the fiscal imbalances in the long run.
The concern is the money is poured down a hole. It will be tough 4 years, it will either be one year of OK followed by 3 years of very painful decline or 3 years of pain and readjustment followed by a very strong recovery.
This is stagflation when the “Real Inflation Rate” is considered. The question is, if Obama adds more stimulus will we hit hyperinflation? I’ll bet he’s gonna try.

I have friends who manage in the retail sector in Onterrible who tell me sales slump until a clearance – my friend in the grocery chain tells me it’s the same for food, people mostly shop the bargains off the fliers and avoid paying full retail prices until an item is on sale then they stock up.
Looks like McGuinty has extended the rust belt north.
I have always been careful with my purchases- because I was self-employed for 25 years, I shopped at Goodwill and Value Village and I always wait until items go on sale – am getting a $135 raincoat from Land’s End for $ 65 inc duty/taxes plus free shipping as I spent over $ 50. Perhaps the rest of the world is finally learning my shopping philosophy!
The Bernanke presser was most revealing.

Yup. Don’t buy anything now unless it’s on sale,at least 30%(I have no prob with retailers making a buck and hiring people, but not at a 300-500% mark-up)Saving a ton in veggies as the garden is now putting out. Can’t wait…well….yes I can…to see how much the Zero trys to pump into “stimulus” soon. There must still be one or two green scams left he can “boost”.
Big Momma nails it – If the populace had her fiscal philosophy, there would never have been an Obama regime, or buying worthless real estate at hugely inflated prices, to begin with.
I was just in the US last week and my wife as usual wanted to go to an outlet mall. They usually have good deals on clothes I need for work but this time it was amazing. The place was a ghost town though and this was a Saturday.
Maybe this is correlated to captain capitalists rant last week about how women buy useless stuff and men are minimalists.
Lol.
The world is regressing to the mean.
Squalor, starvation, pain and misery.

The hippies already voluntarily regressed to squalor 50 years ago.
Just because you’re poor doesn’t mean you have to be dirty.
There should be no reason why a product made for three dollars in China is sold for fifty dollars in North America.
One can argue that idiocy breeds materialism or vice-versa but when even sharp shoppers are feeling the pinch, things are beyond bad.
