IIRC, we have a law in Canada which prohibits the funding of terrorist organizations. Thus, the appropriate reaction of the government should be to immediately freeze the budget of the organization that funded this POS and arrest all high level bureaucrats of the organization under the anti terror legislation. What the "arts" funding organization did was to fund the production of a propaganda film for the taliban.

This is a slow legal process and over the next few years while the matter of illegal terrorist funding is being investigated and funds are frozen, maybe some of the "artists" who are parasites on the population could get real jobs utilizing their marketable skills like serving tables. Phantom, I really hope that PMSH is going to continue cutting "arts" funding with a hatchet. What has mystified me for decades is why leftists are so preoccupied with "art". After seeing yet another kid with depression and an eating disorder today, it suddenly hit me -- math is hard, "art" is easy.

As I ran through the list of kids I've seen with depression over the past few years, one thing that stood out is that many of them had goals of going into some artistic or musical field while failing at math. Whenever I've asked the parents about how their kid plans to pay for their hobby they go on and on about how gifted an artist they are. Presumably they can use their artistic talent to draw little caricatures on peoples restaurant bills to increase their tips once they get out into the real world. I very rarely see the kids that have an interest in math and science as patients. (Either that or they are becoming an endangered species).

What I've heard from university students who are in fine arts programs is a complete disdain for "commercial art" as they seem to feel that "true art" is something that only the enlightened in the artistic community can understand. "True art" is almost universally a commercial failure and thus depends on government funding for its production.

Contrary to the self-absorbed opinions of state supported "artists", the general population has a very good intuitive appreciation for art and can easily classify as piece of art into:

As with everything, truly new and outstanding pieces of art are very rare. Most state supported art falls into the WTF category and makes one yearn for the days of socialist realism where a modicum of talent was required to paint the determined coal miner staring into the distance thinking deeply of how he and his comrades are going to exceed the coal production quota specified in the latest 5 year plan.

As long as kids think that they can be supported by the state to produce "art", we'll have far more ignorant useful idiots being produced by schools who regurgitate socialist talking points as they are mentally incapable of checking the math in, say, CAGW, on their own. They feel inferior to the geeks who not only can do math but also have an artistic appreciation for mathematics as well as real art.

So, the solution is to totally cut any "arts" funding. People are free to support any artist they want by purchasing their creations and a few, truly gifted, artists will be able to make a living from their art. The sooner that kids learn that, if they want to survive in the adult world, they had better learn math and science the better it will be for them. Once they have a trade as a welder or cabinet maker they they can start producing works of art in their spare time.

One kinda gets the impression that progressives, liberal academia, etc, has a completely different definition of the word "art".

Could it be that these people feel overwhelmed by (say) math, and instead of putting the effort in, they want the easy road? (Modern art has been accomplished by gorillas and elephants, so there isnt much effort in it.)

For them, not only do they want the easy road, but they seem to thrive on the praise and approval-seeking. Even though everyone involved knows there is no reason to praise the piece under consideration.

Loki, my wife had a open window painted on our living room wall looking out on a summer field of flowers, birds and a stream and I love it especially on a snowy winter day. The artist was the bartender at my wife's local watering hole downtown.

I was talking to her as she did her painting a few years ago and she told me she is one of only a handful of her group that makes money at her field, the rest are on arts grants and she says they simply can't draw let alone paint a picture and all they can paint is "modern art".

We have a few paintings by my son from his grade 3-4 class still up on the walls and to me they look far better than anything Jason Pollock does, which IMHO is pure cheap crap. Just like the music of the same name, where the "c" is silent.

I like freedom of expression enough to support the right of these morons to make their lame video. I'd like to think that my time in the same sort of convoys and the friends I have lost in similar ambushes are worth the freedoms we enjoy.

I just wish that our own publicly funded broadcaster would let me express myself about the issues of the day without censorship; just because they are afraid someone might be offended.
