Well perhaps some here were not paying attention when I mentioned something about a bill in the US congress restricting gardens or something to that effect with big companies like Monsanto applauding in the background.
The bureaucrats do the dirty work of enforcement and wordsmithing for the municipal politicians. The elected folks are the higher office regulators-in-training or just third rate politicians who couldn't get there.
But the real villains in this are the politician-enabling busybody citizens who practice ocular theft (I can see it and therefore it's mine to rule over).
Big surprise, as if the nanny state can have slaves acting like freemen, running around protecting and feeding themselves.
They are stealing land, closing farms, and preventing people from having any self reliance, yet everyone would rather watch American Idol than think it’s a problem “out there in the sticks”.
I wonder if it really needs to get as bad as Stalin’s Ukraine before the zombies wake up. Probably never.
To think most Canadians & Americans feed themselves with gardens during WW2. These nuts will be the end of civilization. Them & the socialist political welfare Corporate goons.
Perhaps every town should have a stupid rule of the year award. Hosted by the local radio/Tv station and all residents encouraged to vote. Winner would get engraved Dunce cap and a lot of local publicity. Just might slow down these professional busybodies.
When I was a kid, I remember most neighbors had Victory Gardens. They were encouraged by the government as the war effort left a paucity of certain foods for us here. I cannot believe the change in attitude of people over the period of one generation.
I say "F##K them! Plant a garden where you please and let them try and rip it up!
Good idea peterj but I think a bronze plaque posted on a public wall for all to see for a long time describing the dope who came up with the idea and what the stupid award was won for. Perhaps call it the "Memorial Wall of the Stupid".
Most of these outrages are a result of somebody who knows somebody.....
Recently I learned of an associate's driveway being inexplicably being ripped out by a township crew. His enquires at the township office got responces such as there was no driveway there....finally buddy approached the crew boss who just said the driveway was not permitted and there was no municiple address sign.....seems this fella never got notice of the approved driveway permit or the approved municiple address....seems somehow the paperwork "got lost" at the township office.
It's beginning to look like a campaign to prevent his building a house on a 72 acre wooded lot.
The some of the civil serpents were not pleased when Buddy produced HIS copies of the permits and teld him he was being unreasonable in not leaving HIS copies in the care so that they could investigate the matters.
Building inspectors and by-law officers frequently indulge in graft and power trips....
The gal in Tulsa is obviously a victim of a municipal civil serpent vendetta.....
It's a quality of life issue. I can't even count the number of times I've been kept awake by the loud, ultra-low frequency hum of my neighbour's tomato plants.
This is not an isolated incident it is part of a trend - that trend is regulating, at all 3 levels of government, against anyone using their land to be self sufficient or to help others be less reliant.
Laws that arrest Amaish farmers for selling raw foods, laws that arrest any farmer for selling direct to consumers or co-oping food prodution with custmers, selling outside the price fixing marketing boards. Last month there was a man in Georgia driven to suicide over attacks by city bylaw nazis against him keeping chickens. Virtually every day there is a new incident of some land owner being abused by malevolent bylaw enforcement.
This is local governments buying into the UN agenda 21 land use regulation regime - they (UN acolytes) act like there are no property rights laws and of course UN drafters counted on the deteriorated property rights in the US and Canada to carry this gradual obliteration of private land rights forward.
Agenda 21 was sold as a sustainability plan - well there is nothing more sistainable than a self sufficient population creating their own food sources - gardens, live stock - but these are things that are specifically targeted by sustainability regulators - obviously "sustainability" to agenda 21's shock troops means sustainability of unaccountable authority and bureaucratic tyranny.

Damn right Occam nailed it. Pretty soon we'll be lining up for bread Soviet style.
Along with the pesticide ban here in Ont. it's a direct attempt to demoralize the population by not allowing them to keep their property as they would like. So much harrasment of rural Ont farmers so they abandon farming and can no longer resist the lure and money of having wind turbines placed there instead.
It is simply put, tyranny.
Where are the "green" activists and "locavores" who want organic gardens? Why aren't they demanding answers from city officials? Are they too busy with the "tar sands"?
Miss Morrison sounded like she had a really interesting garden.
The reason for this idiocy is likely what was given on Instapundit; that of the habit of tarring and feathering town officials having fallen out of favor.
I couldn't believe the stupidity of the regulations. One of the reasons I moved to my present location in the interior was that there were fewer regulations but even over the last 10 years I've seen the pervasive degeneration of living conditions as statists move in with more restrictive regulations. At least it still seems to be fine to turn ones whole yard into a garden and there are many local Italian families whose houses are hidden by the front yard tomato, pepper and other crops. One house in the neighborhood has netting draped over the whole yard; presumably to prevent birds from eating the grapes which are planted in every bit of yard not occupied by house or driveway.
If it wasn't so much work, I'd remove the grass from my front lawn and grow tomatoes on it as tomatoes are way more usefull than grass clippings. At this time my mulberries and strawberries are starting to ripen and can then look forward to the raspberries and black currents followed by apricots and pears. Rather than growing lettuce I pick young opium poppies which look identical to lettuce and taste the same. There's a large number of additional edible weeds in my garden that I've decided to make use of for culinary purposes.
Rather than mowing lawns, neighborhoods could have herds of sheep that would move from yard to yard keeping the grass short. After they were fattened up over the summer, then one could have a large lamb barbacue.
Political stupidity is a sickness that can only be healed by exerting power. Most bureaucrats are professional busybodies and activists before they even get into politics and thrive on the power trips. Common sense was never a strong point with most of them. School boards to municipal and provincial and then federal for many. Logic was never a requirement but a superiority complex is often the driver and gift of gab the only requirement. We vote for them because we like what we hear and they know what we want to hear. Vicious circle that has worked for centuries. Kate and foobert have the perfect examples of this disease.
Geez, I hope my Giant Atlantic pumpkins "Lola" and "Watson" and my saskatoon berry bushes in my backyard, will survive the scrutiny of Woodstock Ontario's purity police!!!!!
Gaia, help me!!!!!!!
The most troubling is that very few people understand that private property is private and as such is off limits to the public including its officials.
@ Xiat: There are virtually no true land owners in Canada - All property is held in "fee simple", a modern version of feudalism. All you have is conditional state permission to occupy your land. You don't own it! Contrast this with allodial land rights - true ownership which grants one the right to stand their ground, as it were. AFAIK only aboriginal reservations meet the definition.
Bylaw officers are “Creatures of statute” meaning they must only regurgitate that which is in the bylaw and regulations. The question is who creates these laws and the answer is the politician and voters. I always laugh when people complain about federal regulators, sheesh the federal government barely knows you are alive. But the Municipal government knows where you live, what you live in and what you throw away. As a federal regulator I had to point out to bylaw officers that what they plan to do is outside their jurisdiction and unlawful, but they are being pushed by the Mayor, council, who is being pushed by voters to do “something”
Canadians love to complain about each other and they complain to the likes of me, bylaw officers, mayors and council. Thanks to the low turnout out the local politicians pander to the complainers in an effort to get re-elected. So far politicians at the local level seem adverse to reduce local bylaws, but they would do so if pushed by voters. Also Canadians try to use government officials to “get their neighbour” . I have lost track of the number of times I have been called by someone who has a “concern” about what someone else is doing and there must be a law against it. The reality is that for the most part you get the government you asked for.

A carrot contains:
ALANINE, ACETONE, ACETALDEHYDE, ALPHA LINOLENIC ACID, ALUMINUM, ARSENIC, ASARONE, ALPHA TERPINENE, BORNYL ACETATE, BORON, BROMINE, BUTYRIC ACID, CADMIUM, CAMPHOR, CHOLESTEROL, CHOLINE, CHROMIUM, COBALT, CYSTINE, CYSTEINE, ETHANOL, FORMIC ACID, FUMARIC ACID, GLUTAMIC ACID, HYDROGEN CYANIDE, ISOBUTYRIC ACID, ISOPRENE, LAURIC ACID, LEAD, LECITHIN, LITHIUM, LYSINE, MALIC ACID, MERCURY, METHYLAMINE, MYRISTICIN, NICKEL, OXALIC ACID, PHENYLALANINE, PHOSPHORUS, QUERCETIN, SILICON, STEARIC ACID, SULFUR, TARTARIC ACID, TIN, TITANIUM, TRYPTOPHAN, XYLITOL
These things are pure poison. Ask any anti-smoking nazi as they use the same tactics.

well, that's not a notarized document. And Dave Bassi is a convicted criminal. This is hardly something any news outlet should take at all seriously.

Absolutly correct, that is why Albertan's missed an opportunity with the WRP in the last election to address real property rights for its citizens.
Instead the slimmed down PC status quo majority voted for UN lawyer Alison Redford who just returned recently from Bilderberg 2012 in Virginia.
Can we all shout Agenda 21 together?
