The last Jews of Tunisia

I’m not even sure why the rabbi agreed to be interviewed. He answered almost all of our questions this way, as did his assistant. They answered as though the entire Arab world would judge them for what they said and pounce if they uttered a peep of complaint. They reminded me of citizens of police states who are asked on the record what they think of the government.

Its like seeing an interview of a Soviet Union citizen in 1970. Guarded words to the point of meaninglessness.

Revnnant, you haven't read "To My Father's Village" by William Kurelek. There's a passage in one of Kurelek's 1971 letters that's a conversation between an aged villager and a KGB man.

Villager: "For 10 kopeks [during WWII] I would've shot [so-and-so]."

KGB: "So then you've seen many improvements in the village since then?"

Villager: "I can't say. 'Just got back 10 months ago from spending 20 years in Siberia [the gulag]."

Anyway, I was amazed to read in one of Totten's earlier dispatches of an unreconstructed Stalinist residing in Sidi Bouzid, Tunisia.

"They reminded me of citizens of police states who are asked on the record what they think of the government."

As they should,Mr.Totten, for that is what they are living in. Only this -ism is islamofacism, not communism.

I don't think he's afraid of the government, which looks fairly benign, but of Salafist organizations and the mobs they conjure. Two word cure: concealed carry.

“Do you walk around, either of you, on the street wearing the kippah?”

He vigorously shook his head. “We don’t,” he said. “People might think we’re Zionists and we don’t want that, so we wear a hat.”

They had at least one problem then. They felt the need to be closeted, at least on the street. That’s never a good sign."

Sounds like your average European city...

It's disgusting that native populations will either be wiped out or forced to leave.

Revnant Dream, my uncle visited his birth place in Russia in 1982 and if the people he visited wanted to talk to him about anything that might be considered not politically correct, they would go outside or if inside a home, they would do like this rabbi did and give non-answer answers.

When right wingers mention the issue of jews leaving the middle east en masse, they always somehow refuse to acknowledge Israel role in it.

Facts:

- Israel actively encouraged jews to leave their place of birth and come to Israel.
- Israel even send emissary to knock at the doors of individual jews to offer them packages and accommodation to move to Israel.

"Israel even send emissary to knock at the doors of individual jews to offer them packages and accommodation to move to Israel."

Links for proof please.
Just because you say it doesn't make it true.
Not that there's anything wrong with it.

Why yes Israel did encourage Jews to leave Arab states for the same reason a fireman encourages someone in a burning building to get out.
