The Sound Of Settled Science

Lovelock is a world-renowned scientist and environmentalist whose Gaia theory — that the Earth operates as a single, living organism — has had a profound impact on the development of global warming theory.

Unlike many “environmentalists,” who have degrees in political science, Lovelock, until his recent retirement at age 92, was a much-honoured working scientist and academic.

His inventions have been used by NASA, among many other scientific organizations.

Lovelock’s invention of the electron capture detector in 1957 first enabled scientists to measure CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) and other pollutants in the atmosphere, leading, in many ways, to the birth of the modern environmental movement.

Having observed that global temperatures since the turn of the millennium have not gone up in the way computer-based climate models predicted, Lovelock acknowledged, “the problem is we don’t know what the climate is doing. We thought we knew 20 years ago.” Now, Lovelock has given a follow-up interview to the UK’s Guardian newspaper in which he delivers more bombshells sure to anger the global green movement, which for years worshipped his Gaia theory and apocalyptic predictions that billions would die from man-made climate change by the end of this century.

Lorrie had his piece picked up by both Drudge and hotair. I bet his hits went through the roof !!

He accurately equates environmentalism as a religion. And notes how it is replacing real religions like Christianity.

The warmists are already starting to trash Lovelock by downplaying his life's work and marginalizing his latest thoughts. For example, the Gaia hypothesis, they claim, was just an abstract way of looking at the natural world, but global warming is based on hard! scientific! facts!

"Lovelock still believes anthropogenic global warming is occurring and that mankind must lower its greenhouse gas emissions"

Just killed his whole recantation. There is still ZERO proof we have anything to do with globull warming, but you can bet the eco-cultists will pick this up and run with it.
But then I'm just an "eeevvviiillll denier" so what do I know about this scam?

rd: this brings to mind an essay by michael crichton, environmentalism as a religion. can't find the essay, but here is a link to a video about it

So wait... The guy who developed the CFC detector is also the leader of a philosophy that says high CFCs are bad.

How is that different than a guy who develops a device for detecting alien souls stuck inside you and is the leader of a philosophy that says these alien souls are bad.

So, when does the IPCC get reclassified as a religion, or gets kicked out of Germany, Greece and Spain?

Justthinkin - How do you equate this quote ( from Lovelock )

" A long-time supporter of nuclear power as a way to lower greenhouse gas emissions, which has made him unpopular with environmentalists, Lovelock has now come out in favour of natural gas fracking (which environmentalists also oppose), as a low-polluting alternative to coal.

As Lovelock observes, “Gas is almost a give-away in the U.S. at the moment. They’ve gone for fracking in a big way. This is what makes me very cross with the greens for trying to knock it … "

and, this quote:

"Lovelock acknowledged, “the problem is we don’t know what the climate is doing. We thought we knew 20 years ago.”

with a pro- AGW viewpoint?

" Lovelock still believes anthropogenic global warming is occurring and that mankind must lower its greenhouse gas emissions, but says it’s now clear the doomsday predictions, including his own (and Al Gore’s) were incorrect. "

I follow The Guardian's environment section regularly and what is most noticeable of late is that fewer and fewer articles permit comments. I think it's because the Green religion is getting absolutely killed in those comments and the ideologues who control the message know it.

Yeah CO2 probably has about as much influence on climate as a mosquito bite on an elephant's Blood Pressure...

The planet has been warming and cooling for millions of years. All on its own. That is the headline I'm waiting for. Predictions were just as bad before we had computers. The gravy train was just not as lucrative.

Yikes. I usually last about 15 minutes, once every two months. It's a den of villainous lunacy over there at the Guardian.

"And notes how it is replacing real religions like Christianity"

and that is just another unprovable belief system

you have just proven that people, in general, are believers, just different unprovable beliefs for different believers

Six months from now Gore and the greenies will look at you when you mention Lovelock's name as if you're talking about some alien that no one has ever heard of.

Black Mamba @ 2:24: "It's a den of villainous lunacy . . ." No argument there, but endless fun poking a stick through the cage and watching them verbally twist themselves into pretzels when challenged by a few simple facts.

Just another false Prophet.

NME666

Read from Isaiah 53, Psalm 22, the whole book of Ruth, Daniel(Which historians quake at) & many other Prophesies of Joshua's of Nazareth from where he was to be born to how he would die, to even be buried, as well as with whom he would die. Also many things he could not have controlled. From a book by 66 authors over thousands of years. By the way we have a Full edition in copper of Isaiah from about 300 BC. In all 118 prophecies of a coming Messiah including examples like Abraham with his son to Daniel telling about his death. To examples like a serpent (Sin) on a pole to save people. There are around 213 left to be fulfilled at His second coming.

That is if your not a chicken

Revnant Dream... WTF!!! You epitomize the deniers. Just a group of wackos like yourself who are incapable of understanding science(unless it's the pseudo-science paid for by oil companies and promoted by 92 year old senile 'scientists' paid off the Koch brothers.). Thousands of respected scientists and climatologists in countries around the world support anthropogenic global warming. Washed up scientists, Sarah Palin, right-wing talk show hosts, faux news and the 'tards at sun news and don't. So you go ahead and grasp at any little straw you can to try and prove your side. Myself and the majority of Americans will believe facts. From NSAPOCC poll: "The number of people who believe that the planet is warming is at its highest level since the fall of 2009. According to a survey conducted in December 2011 by the National Survey of American Public Opinion on Climate Change, 62% of Americans say they think global warming is happening. That’s up 7% from last spring."
I suppose ya'll also believe in angels, a 5000 year old earth and the tooth fairy!

@ bill
"62% of Americans say they think global warming is happening"

And so they should as it is now summer. The sane ones have seen evidence of NO global warming in the last 11 years. Nothing that a bucket full of Prozac can't cure for you though. Hang in there, but in reality you wont find much support for your discredited theories on this site.

bill

Don't have to prove a thing. Just saying the world is full of false messiahs. Doesn't mean all are.
We all die in the end. That's a fact. I don't disparage real science by Method, not Mythology like Global warming. Or its many offshoots. One branch I don't consider anything but bunk, & that's so called social science.

Bill, lay off the bath salts before you chew a "deniers" face off. And yes we all believe in the tooth fairy, we thought he would bring "hope and change", heal the planet and stop the rise of the oceans, turns out he just advertises for Subway. As far as the warming, yes it is summer, that happens, rant on idiot, your not even useful, and you have lost, it is over, finito, get it Bill, Suzuki Gore Pauchari Strong, are all frauds, they are the real tooth fairys.

@ bill
since you are making so many friends here, just to show you we really care this link will make you feel at home. Long list but these people were all true believers, just like you. Enjoy.

It's almost too easy debating with rednecks. I now know how Jane Goodall felt studying chimps. Bartinsky you idiot, where did I mention anything about summer in my post. It's climate change you fool. It takes years not a season. And by the way it's 'you're' not 'your' when saying 'you are'. You guys are at a whole new level of dumb.

You're welcome bill. Come back anytime.
